GH1 has Sony Competition -- NEX5

The full review of the Sony's video capabilities is at http://www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/NEX5/NEX5VIDEO.HTM with samples. It implies manual focus is possible, though auto exposure is always on.

The ISO performance is surprisingly good:

We were surprised by the NEX-5's good image quality at all ISOs, and its printed quality was remarkable. For a small camera to output ISO 3,200 images that look amazing when printed at 13x19 inches: that's worth noticing.
I'm guessing this sensor is going to be in the Alpha700 replacement as well as the Nikon D400...

...but damn is that camera small...

If manual mode could be enabled it would be amazing.
I've read everywhere that this camera only shoots interlaced 30fps, but today I've downloaded a couple of clips from from a well known spanish review website and the clips were 25p! I've started looking around and apparently this camera can do 1440 x 1080 @ 29.97 / 25 fps if you're recording MP4. I'm not sure if this a PAL thing only.

What is the native format of footage of off the sensor before it gets wrapped in the 50i stream on the PAL camera?
25p or 30p?

I am buying the NEX5 but worried about interlacing.

Does 50i with pulldown applied look = to 25p native in Fincal Cut?

First, you can't buy it, you can only preoder it :-)
Second - pulldown removal is NTSC thing.
And interlaced content is interlaced content - you need deinterlacer.

I still cannot find a source of information to see if the PAL version will shoot 25p in either 720 or 1080.

Think it is pal or ntsc depending where you buy

No specific info to confirm other than what I've seem on review sites that say 1080i/50/60 and 1080p(1440)25/30. So it does look like a pal option will be available.

Without an ae lock in video though its a bit of a nightmare dont you think? also aliasing looks bad on some clips, on others not so bad, see here

No, 50i is a "live," "video" look.

You can convert 50i to 25p, but you lose vertical resolution by doing so.

Not true, actually; when 25p is carried in a 50i or 50p stream, there's a 2:2 pulldown and it needs to be removed to get the native 25p frames.

Thanks for remark.
My point was that such term as "removing pulldown" is normally referred only in NTSC case. 50i to 25p conversion is not referred as pulldown removal in PAL countries. But, of course, technically you are right.

I bet you could ramp the bitrate right up on that if you could get access to the fw? tester13, might be interested if we can get him one and Sony release a fw update, which is almost certain.

In fact, Barry can get NEX for review :-)
He just seems to be not very interested.
I not only interested to look at firmware, but also to disassembly this small beast and look at parts used.

I was tempted at first, but I keep tracking back to the 'you can't get a 100-300mm with ois at that portability anywhere else' thought and it all falls back into place.

At least as long as Panasonic keeps impressing, that is.
