GH1/GH13 vs. 60D

blurred 60D (7D)

blurred 60D (7D)

. . . I can get a 60d after instead of the gh2.

finger away from the blurred 60D (image quality?!:crybaby:) If you absolutely want to have the newest, buy the GH2. But if you revising the GH1 to GH13, then you have neither of them anyway

What? I'll probably get the GH2 and I will definitely get the Gh2 or the 60d... but I NEED to shoot a project NOW, before thanksgiving... so I obviously need a camera now. Since I can get a gh13 with the lens I will need for the gh2 for 950 bucks then I can sell the body and will be able to get what I wanted. I might even gain money by seeling the GH13 so I don't see a problem. I also bought two just in case and if they are both hackable I will sell one on here for 1250-1300. So I think I've got it figured out. Also the 60d doesn't suck as much as you think. They are both GREAT cameras.

... soon not to be available at B&H (US market).

This caught my eye - could you explain?

Also ..... there are dozens of websites saying the GH2 is available for pre-order at B&H, but ever since I've been looking (i.e. earlier this week) this has not been so - they just offer "Notify when in stock". Can someone please clarify whether there WAS a B&H pre-order option for a time, that has now ended????

Edit: I'll answer my own question: there never was.

@Jackson, have you checked out all the footage comparisons etc and did you follow the hack research when they were cranking up the codec bitrate etc?

The GH13 hack improved the codec. Prior to the hack the GH1 still resolved really great images, at a much higher resolution than the Canon DSLRs, etc. Codec quality is just one aspect of image quality. For example, the low-light performance on the GH2 is much better an than the GH1, and for all we know now the image could be higher resolution (won't know till we see res chart tests.) So your assertion that the GH13 has a better image quality is based on a few clips for pre-production GH2 models? Because the specs and the clips I've seen look quite good. Or are you simply misinterpreting the specs?

So if the Gh1 is this amazing quality higher resolution camera why is Canon #1 ?

I mean wouldn't everyone just be using a gh1?

Help me out here

Firstly because Canon's SLR division is much better known than Lumix among photo-pros, so it got more attention. Secondly, because the GH1's original codec did hamper its versatility, although not its resolved resolution. Thirdly, because the Canon cameras have larger sensors and features like HDMI out that the GH1 doesn't have. Many Canon users are reluctant to switch over to a smaller sensor camera for FOV reasons even though the resolution is higher, which is a perfectly valid opinion to have. I don't share it, but it makes sense. Fourthly because Canon's marketing department handled things better.

IMO Apple has been making better computers than other PC manufacturers for years and years but they didn't have better market growth until more recently...why? Because people became more aware of the products because of the successes of the iPod, iPhone, etc. People don't automatically go buy the best product out there if it hasn't been properly marketed to them

Additionally, the GH13 hack has made it much better known, between that, the GH2, and the AF-100, I suspect we'll see a lot of Canon people moving over...in fact it's already started happening. There's people I know were die-hard Canon shooters a year ago who are now shooting GH13.

Not everyone's aware of the quality jump with the hack, but I've personally ushered in several hacked GH-1's into rental houses for 3D and they're quickly replacing their Canon systems, especially considering the GH-1 doesn't need to be ripped apart to see a PL mount. That's here in Los Angeles.

I like the 5D a lot more than I used to for aesthetic, hoping Full Frame comes in a better package soon for my personal preferences. Would love to see an Epic FF with HDR enabled, that's a dream for fantasy and sci-fi filmmaking.

doesn't matter till we see footage..... I am blowing away clients NOW with GH1.3 hacked footage.. what I have seen of GH2 footage has not impressed me. If it's better, damn yes I'll switch. If it's not... no.

I really want to see that the Gh2 can do with some nice glass. Hopefully by next month the reviews will be out and everyone can see. Nothing more to do than wait & time will tell

Just a bit why? Only test shorts etc and a few comparisons but they didn't do a lot to help me make up my mind.

@Jackson: It's just that The GH1 is not the best all-round camera, but it's really exceptional at certain things, for instance, it's the only HDSRL-type cam currently available that can produce footage of which a frame grab looks like a photo (I mean at a pixel quality level).

The others are all NOT hacked, so their compression codecs only let them produce footage up to a certain compression quality.

To me that means I can get a better key off green screen, or I can push the image further in post before it breaks up.

If you don't mind, here are a few links I like to show my friends who've never heard of the GH1:

It's not a 5D killer, but it's a VERY special camera for certain things. =)

WOW I just got the first of the two GH1's I ordered. Luckily it is hackable. Lets just say this thing is going to take some major getting used to haha. Its a huge step down size wise from the 5dii. I have pretty big hands and I keep hitting all of these little buttons and changing settings and I have no idea what I am changing since I haven't ready anything yet. Regarding the lens, is the zoom on all of them so STIFF? Kind of annoying. I guess I'm pretty happy so far but I only have had it for 10 mins. Now I have to finish ordering the rest of my gear.

Welcome to the Canon defector club... :)

Canons are still cool....but the GH1(3) r.....

I'm so childish..

I'll try not to make any judgments until I get to know it and see the footage. One major upside is I can now buy a huge amount of gear I couldn't before because of the extra money I have. Although the 60d is cheap too. At the moment wide lens pricing and lowlight are my biggest concerns. I am going to have to do with a 17mm f3.5 until I can afford a better solution.

The 20mm f1.7 is a real nice option. I find myself using this lens more and more when shooting video.
