GH1 discontinued; GH2 in September/October

If you want to see how "B" frames work, drop a AVCCAM (HMC150) mts file into Streameyes (not streamparser - no b frame icon) and play the file. You can see the way it works differently to the GH1 files. ....very interesting.

oh well why are we even talking about gh2 then?
Exactly my point -- there is nothing to be known, so why talk about a complete unknown.

sounds like it will be a joke...move on folks nothing to see here just another crippled stills camera.
See, this is what's ridiculous. How can you proclaim a nonexistent product a "joke" or a "crippled stills camera"? It doesn't exist yet. Nobody knows anything about it yet. This is -- well, it's basically slander of an unannounced product's reputation. How does that help anything?

(...)

because Panasonic (the ONLY people who know anything about it) haven't said anything yet
Yes, the only thing I heard from a Panasonic rep was that the GH1 model is discontinued. The GH2 (they used this designation with me before I could have mentioned) is coming to be announced in September and to probably be released in October.

That "probably" is mine once I asked them with an 'are you sure?'.

I didn't ask about features once they would know nothing to say, I bet.

I believe anything beyond would be mere speculation. But it wouldn't surprise me if they could say whatever I could have asked them for.

That's why I didn't wonder them for GH2, only about stocks. And that was the reply I got. GH2 came from their mouth.

It can be useful IMHO for those who may be thinking to buy a GH1 these days. I am not under NDA/CDA. It does seem the Panasonic rep who I talked with, either ;-)

The AF100 is made by an entirely different company than the GH1 or (rumored) GH2. Panasonic Broadcast and Television Systems does not care one bit about what impact their AF100 will have on any GH1 or GH2 or whatever. The GH1/GH2 are made by Panasonic Consumer Electronics. And Panasonic Consumer doesn't know or care what impact their GH1, GH2, whatever - will have on any Panasonic Broadcast product. They are different companies.
True. However, the rep with who I talked said what I quoted because is it Panasonic Consumer Electronics?

I believe if it was Panasonic Broadcast could have happened the same. I have a business relationship with them since 1990 when I bought a MX12 (does anyone remember?) twenty years ago. I spent more than EUR 2500 in portuguese escudos then, since when I've been used to deal with their reps. I am not so sure they wouldn't have a similar attitude as same as their Panasonic Consumer department yesterday morning on the phone.

The departments communicate, know and care more than you think. It is obvious the AF-100 came from people trying to use the GH1 professionally... so don't tell me they are separate companies that don't give a crap what the other is doing, that's a load of horse manure. They are intricately tied because the lines are thinning and thinning like a balding man running out of that fake hair spray stuff.

The AF-100 was born of the wants of GH1 users... they are using the damn sensor for lord high holy satan... or maybe not now.

I really don't see WHAT they hell they are goint to do with the GH2, having to deal with the GH1 already kicking ass. Just adopt the hack and tweak it?

If it's anything less no one will buy it.... the hacked GH1 is ALL over the internet now and everyone will DEMAND that quality or feel ripped off and hate Panasonic.

Lets hope they pull some new magic out of the hat.

They'll surely have some point of communication between their technologies' development task forces. But what Barry meant was that even a sort of competition you can find from their action in the field. They compete for sales. They can even not to give a damn for the sister's success (of course, under my words, not Barry's :-) even when both departments co-operate.

I know it happens. They just want to fulfill their share of the market or what they settled down in their paperwork in the beginning of the year. Sometimes, when the mark has been reached in the middle or 2/3 of the year, they can even not to care about their own sales results from then on, before the year ends.

I've seen this to happen in Panasonic, Sony, etc. They even say it with no reserve, go figure. One of these examples that I've contacted with, is now the man in charge of the professional/broadcast division of a big company's european branch.

I stand corrected: I did a little research on google. This example I posted, is now one of the company's big names in Europe, both departments (professional/broadcast and consumer electronics) included.

Wong.

Panasonic sells these as STILL cameras to consumers. To think it will flop because the video functions might not be improved (and not improved as viewed by an extremely small contingent of people) just doesn't make sense for this product.

pick up a photo mag, ANY photo mag, and it's likely you'll never see the GH1 mentioned. it's always the GF1 that get's mentioned....not sure why...it's the same guts, but with 720p only. crazy that in a "full 1080p" push by these manufacturers, they're pushing the GF1 as the next best thing as opposed to the GH1. i'm not bitter though. i've had my GH1 for many months now...it's just something i noticed.

it's nice that you received some seemingly inside info, but the likelihood that the GH2 will be available in just 2 or 3 months is pretty much slim to none. If you have been here since the "GH1 Availability thread" you might remember how poorly the release of the GH1 was handled... I can't believe I had to ultimately get mine from Canada. Maybe there will be a nice surprise from this division but so far we haven't seen a lot of greatness (aside from the hardware), unless of course you are considering the 1.34 firmware update a nice surprise... :P

I'd expect the GH2 to be available 6 months after the announcement of it... Or later!!!

agreed^ if anything, to go along with my previous post, it'll likely be a "GF2", with "full 1080p HD!"...novel concept. :-P

Ipowell, Kiselev & Green-

thanks.
very educational.

I concur. I find myself getting angry when I get sucked into reading the rumour mill threads. I owned the first GH1 in Canada, and have been using it along side my HMC150 as a B camera since I got it. It is great camera for certain jobs. Next year in my opinion it will still be a great camera for certain jobs and the HMC150 will too and I will hopefully join many of you in buying an AF100.
Sure Panasonic is smiling and responding to all the fuss about the GH1 and we will see some nice features in the GH2 that take into account the needs of many who use it. Like the original DVX 100 that so many here started on, the GH1 has attracted many "new" film makers and that is great. The quality of the image and the technology are being pushed and that is even better but it is still not in the pro league.
I shoot for a living and sure I want the best quality tools I can get for my dollar and the dollar my clients pay me but that means buying professional tools. Sure the Canons and GH1 have fueled the DSLR rage for the past while but they don't work for me. I need to have a camera that has XLR inputs, zoom controls, proper ergonomics and so on. Not everyone is making the next great indy film or skateboard saga. Some of us just shoot for a living.....whatever the client wants.
My 2 cents,,,,
Cheers

exposing " insider talk" and thus risking that employees job is the right way to go :-(

whatever the GH2 is going to be like, the AF100 is going to be more interesting 4 me.

I have no idea what "insider talk" means... If you want to try to say about to be loyal to who pays them, it doesn't seem to me they may be too much concerned on what they say or don't say. It doesn't seem they may be under NDA/CDA either. It is actually wise to be loyal to who or what pays our bills indeed, when we have bills to pay.

To each his own. Who isn't under NDA/CDA and is loyal to an unbiased deal with independent moviemaking/business knows very well who pays the bills. Including the funds necessary to pay the manufacturers. If you rent, you'll end to pay the manufacturers anyway. The only rule the customer should know is the money to serve the business, but the own business, not the others' game.

There's no other forum like dvxuser outside, so the reader here should try to take advantage of this elementary 'film school', so often a valuable 'high school' and sometimes as good as any graduate school. However, we live in a new age of learning where the learner must know how to pick the information aka knowledge. There's no soup for free no matter where you're looking for.

no I mean if I am told some secret I keep it to myself and dont post it in public....

if I absolutely need to post it in public I protect my source....

I mostly agree. As posted, I have my doubts and we should always extract the salt we're used to hear when we talk with sellers. However, remember they already have a product to run their shelves. If the GH1 is effectively discontinued as they said to me, they will need to replace it with something else. Hope this anything else should mean a step forward. More than this is only speculation or wishes list. And we didn't arrive to the Christmas yet ;-)

Ah, OK. You do it good. Nobody asked me anything. I don't even think they consider the nature of this information a secret or they wouldn't release this info so easily.
