GH1 body "peeling"?

We carried my GH1 body in a friend's carrying case - one of those briefcase jobs with the open cell foam cut out to size - for about two days.
Pulled it out and put it back again maybe 20 times all in all.
I was just looking at the cam's body and I realized that the lower front edge of the right hand grip is peeling off  just like skin does after a sunburn.

Is this a common problm / issue?... Darn.
I'm not a fetishist or anything (I have many "relic" guitars that I simply adore) ... it just looks fugly.

Are there any other road worn / "relic'd" GH1s out there?

Same kinda thing here... except it was done by my Canon FD 50 I had with me in a small camera bag along with the GH1/kit lens - the teeth on the end cap from the adapter on the 50 rubbed a few wide 'Wolverine-style' scratches on the handle - can see the plastic underneath. Damn.

But since the GH13 hack, I don't see the scratches anymore - just scars that chicks really dig... ;)

LMAO!

funny thing is that there was no contact w/ sharp objects whatsoever.
It began like a blister and now it's like skin peeling after a sunburn.

Still - I hear you when you talk about scars... purch'd a Nikon 105 1.8 prime the other day. The salesman also showed me a NIB item (at collector's price tag, hehe) ... I went for the worn item  ... has "the look", y'knows ;-)

I wonder if it is a chemical in that foam that is causing it?

I remember buying a cheap guitar stand and the foam rubber on it melted onto one of my guitars. I was pissed...but at least it was just a cheap Strat knock-off. ;)

I hate that darned pick-n-pluck foam crap. I used to have it in my Pelican cases and cheap aluminum gear cases, until I found as it decayed it left little bits of foam in all of my camera gear!

My GH1 isn't showing any signs of wear yet, after using it full time to shoot weddings for almost a year I guess. However, I shoot all video from a tripod, and only use it handheld for amateur photography. Maybe the peeling comes from oils in the hand?

Here is the booboo...
Now let's hear what Customer support will say... :-/

I did a show with the XDCam 350s and we noticed the Canon eHD lenses hand grip areas started delaminating. Like layers of skin peeling off the plastic. Finally figured out it was because we were all using sunscreen on that summer show. I think it was the Sport Bullfrog stuff... but it ate right through plastic!

We came to one conclusion - they obviously need to make Canon lens handles out of the same plastic that the sunscreen comes in.

LOL to that!!
I'll have to think if one of us had applied any kind of aggressive lotion / cologne that day...definitely something to consider for the future.

"WARNING: please handle your Lumix GH1 with white cotton laboratory gloves (part # LMX-GLV-1) when shooting in bright sunny conditions and/or if your skin PH is either too basic or too acid."

If I saw your camera without the backstory, I'd have guessed that was the result of an impact. That trail of four marks next to the big one definitely contributes to that appearance.

I think a lot of these rubbery / powder-coat-like coverings are more susceptible to chemical interactions than they should be.

Actually the 4 "marks" are (at the current stage) like mini-blisters - there are no dings / dents / scratches.

And I agree on the chemical stability of those finishes... IMHO takes just a wrong handling (say naked vs. gloved hands) before the spraying process and bingo...

having said this, I'm still in my honeymoon phase w/ my GH1(13) :D

older G1 owners reported the same thing. the coating peels off if agitated too much. i guess sliding your camera in and out of the case rubbing against the foam as well as maybe it moving around also when you walk caused it. sure does look ugly though..ha

LOL - "agitate well before using", eh?
(note: that is a literal translation from italian "agitare" i.e "to shake").
You may be right - I'm waiting for P'sonic Switzerland to say something about the matter.
Still - since the cam comes from Mathers in the UK, and their trade in GH1 bodies appears to be brisk, I doubt it has anything to do with an "older" batch. Suppose it's just a one off thing. As long as it doesn't affect the sensor, I'm really not overly concerned.
