People have reported, that cameras with higher serial number are hackable.

What do you mean, that your camera is not hackable? Have you tried to hack it and failed? Or that your firmware version is 1.34?

You may failed to apply the firmware for various reasons and yet your camera could be hackable.

It is really about your firmware and not serial number. You can check your firmware doing this steps:
1) Turn camera off, and set the Drive Mode lever to Single
2) While holding both the "Display" and "Film Mode" buttons, turn the camera on.

That's it, now you can find the "ROM Backup" option in the setup menu. And, you can use the following to get to the error and counter menus:

3) With the camera on (from last step), press and hold the left arrow button and the "Menu Set" button together. Keep holding them!
4) While these are pressed, press "Film Mode". You can let go of all the buttons now!

Now you'll see the error codes displayed, you can use the arrows to navigate and you can hit Display to go to some other similar display of codes. Note, that in the 2nd and 3rd code display pages, the LCD is getting output from the sensor.

If you repeat the "Left Arrow" + "Menu" + "Film Mode" button press you find the "Camera Info" screen showing firmware version, a serial number (probably the main board), power cycle count, shutter count, and strob count.

Some hackable G1's currently available in the UK

Some hackable G1's currently available in the UK

Currys Digital in Hull has a July 09 model
Currys Superstore in Lincoln has an August 09 model
Currys Digital in Doncaster has two July 09 models
Currys in Kings Lyn has 2 09 models (month unknown)
Currys Aberdeen has 2 09 models (month unknown)
Park Cameras have several early 2010 models in red - which was my choice (the year, not the colour ;) )
Park are also the cheapest, and very helpful.

Thanks to the person on this thread who mentioned that the red cameras are less popular, and thus more likely to be available pre v1.34 This does indeed seem to be the case.

Panasonic UK cashback deal ends today btw

I got private message from roelf and he wrote, that his camera firmware is 1.34

Hey, did we ever figure out what the "S" in the fourth slot meant?

I found a Japanese camera with the serial FS9Sxxxxxx.

So I take it it's a 2009 model, but I'm curious as to what the S means.

It's a pretty good deal so I'll probably get it, is there anything I should know? Should be good to go, right?

Everybody who has a GH1 with 1.34 loaded has not been able to hack the camera. This is fact.
I've tried the same, and 1.34 doesn't work.
I've hacked 3 x GH1, 1 x GF1, 3 x G1, so I know what I'm doing!!!

1.34 will not hack!!!!!

Even Vitaliy says that 1.34 will not hack!!!!!

The reason is obvious.... When Panasonic released the previous firmware Vitaliy had to tweak the PTool to work with the new release (1.32).
Panasonic have NOT released the new 1.34, so Vitaliy cannot update PTool. They have only LOADED it onto cameras made June 2010 and later.

Hey guys,

I'm looking at another GH1 Red body with serial FT8JA00XXXX.

I've seen FS models but no FT models and the third serial number is "8" which is strange because it's usually 9 or 0.

Just thought I'd ask if anyone knew if this met the hackable criteria.

Thanks in advance!

Gary

One other thing I've noticed....

All of the Gold coloured GH1 cameras I've seen in Japan(maybe 6 or 7) are made before June 2010.

That doesn't mean to say that all Gold coloured GH1 cameras in Japan ARE before June 2010, but I think it's more probable you'll get a hackable one if it's gold!!!

I bought one for a friend today and it was FS9HC001xxx (August 2009), in Gold.

It says the firmware is 1.1

Do you mean Red or Gold ( I did not know there was a Gold color model)

Hi all,

I feel so fu**ing stupid... Got a GF1 from ebay, Japanese version...

Serial number FV0FC102XXX and guess what ? NOT HACKABLE! And i do not speak a word of JAPANESE.

Put on sale on ebay.

No chance to get english language on new firmware i guess? Would pay to just have the english menus.

Regarding the repeated questions of whether a specific camera is hackable or not:
Guys, please carefully review information, which is clearly laid on in this thread, and MAKE THE DECISION FOR YOURSELF.

How much are *new* hackable gh1s going for on eBay with the kit lens?
