GH1.3 black levels

If you're using the studio to rgb color corrector preset for grading, you MUST remember to disable it prior to rendering. LOL, it's painful when you're rendering AVC and you forget to do this! AVI's - no biggie. BTW, if you're not using the color corrector, then you have to have your vid driver do the conversion for you. I choose both options since I have two monitors - 1 LCD, 1 CRT. For the CRT, I have the Nvidia driver do the studio -> RGB conversion for me so I don't have to enable the preset on the output FX. But if I want to grade on the LCD, then I have to enable to preset since I don't want to have the driver do it (the LCD is my primary PC display).

Ok I am now more confused.... without enabling ANYTHING... when dropping avchd clips into vegas 9e I get a darker output no matter how I set it... 8 bit , 32 bit video or 32 bit studio.

well, your mts files are in studio rgb but you're probably previewing in computer rgb. just turn on the output fx (studio rgb -> computer rgb) and see if that gives you what you're looking for.

Also, for me at least, it's much easier to just standardize on one colorspace and make sure you stick with it. otherwise you have to keep finding out what this decodes into and what you need to do to get it into your desired colorspace. For me, that means sticking with studio RGB (which makes sense since i'm mostly if not completely using cineform avi's anyway).

I don't get the darkening issue when using neoscene cineform files, but again, the massive increase in the needed amount of HD space and the slight degradation lead me to want to edit the native files if at all possible. The encodes from editing natively, however slight, are cleaner to me than the cineform files... of course, as I get into longer and longer length productions.. the native editing is becoming an issue in vegas... so for a full length feature I may have to go to cineform but I am looking into Edius 6 and finding it very promising... but I am going to play with what you are talking about here and see if it fixes the issues cause I love vegas for short edits.

Don't bash your head. That will worsen the confusion

I just did a more 'detailed' test that I've done in the past, using the following work flow:

MTS -> Apple Final Cut Express Log and Transfer -> AIS
AIS -> JES Deinterlacer -> Apple ProRes 422(HQ).

When I first did this, and looked at the wave form in Premiere Pro, the final ProRes clip was stepped up to 7.5% black, and the whites dropped down from 100% IRE to about 90-95% (I posted screen shots in the Workflow section, got no responses...)

I then posted to the JES forum, and got a response that there are options of 'Video' or 'Full Range' on the JES conversion, and that the defaults are 'video', because that's what most people 'use'...

Well, I'm not interested in 'broadcast'... and even if I were, I'd do the 'broadcast filtering' on the final output...

Anywah, once I did the JES -> ProRes with the 'full range option', the results matched up with the MTS original and the AIS transcoded via FCE. (I'm working on how to eliminate the FCE step... perhaps
with ffmpeg... I did download the Neoscene product, but I'm still not convinced I want yet-another-codec to deal with... ok I installed the Avid DNxHD codec... but anyway...)

Did you ever post a MTS clip of your media so we could look at it, or if you have the ability to do waveforms in Vegas, that may also be illuminating...

I also got in to 'calibrating your display' using 'cheap' tools, because I don't have the budget for pro monitors or attendant tools. But HD is using the ITU 709 standard, and I don't know how that feeds into
the various NLE's and how they represent the image. We have had discussions about how the GH-1 stills can be switched between sRGB and Adobe RGB, but not much has been mentioned about whether the video is using those color spaces as the standard, or whether there's any hint of the 709 standard...

You are talking all mac stuff. I'm a Win 7 64 bit guy - we are sworn enemies and must fight to the death now.

As far as the display, it's not that. The original MTS clips all play beautifully and at proper exposure and black levels everywhere else... monitor... projector... blu-ray, playstayion 3, all exactly same color and black levels...

I haven't had a chance to toy with the above suggestions yet I've been running around without sleep going cocoa for cuckoo puffs on a bunch of different shoots. I do have some native hacked .mts files up that I posted but I warn you my server has been bombarded lately I need to get more bandwidth...
