GF1 testing and footage goes HERE

Really excellent! I need to learn how to do post production in video :p I have no problems with stills, but no idea on software/technique for video. Maybe I can do a night class.

a) get the best quality 24/25p result at 720p (preferably mjpeg for 4:2:2) - I'm not afraid of using editing software, I just need a little guidance - feel free to point me to links.
b) get the best quality 60/50p result at 720p for semi-slow-mo :)
c) trick the camera into letting me set frame rate, AE lock? I'll google this as well but if someone can help a brother out that would be awesome. I have ND filters.

I'm going to NZ in 10 weeks and want to try and get proficient so that I have everything set up to shoot some video that will compliment my still photography nicely.

i don't think there are any other frame rate settings apart from 30fps in mjpeg... at the moment.

Mike797 - what settings for 108 Mbps ? and which card did you use that could handle that ?

BTW - why can't we write write to a hard drive powered by the firewire or HDMI cable ?

For your second question, the reasons are threefold:
  • Because it's not a feature written into the firmware
  • The GF1 doesn't have a firewire port?
  • HDMI spec does not provision for a 500mA current (bare minimum for portable hard drive) to be provided across any of the lines.

Just got a GF1 with the pancake 20mm and PTools 3.36 worked fine. Strangely the MPEG is eating 8x more space on the card than AVCHD.

MPEG settings:
MJPEG 1280m width 1440
MJPEG 1280m height 1080
MPEG 1280m 420->422 color sampling checked
MJPEG E1 Quality 384
MJPEG E1 Table 24
MJPEG E2 Quality 300
MJPEG E2 Table 24
MJPEG E3 Quality 300
MJPEG E3 Table 24
MJPEG E4 Quality 276
MJPEG E4 Table 24

AVCHD settings:
Video bitrate adjustment 38000000
Overall bitrate adjustment 40000000
Limiting bitrate adjustment 42000000

Also the AF of the pancake behaves differently than my stock 14-140: even with AF/MF: ON I can NOT use MF!! I have to switch manually to MF
and with AFS checked I seem to get AFC...

I've noticed the same things on both accounts, MJPG takes up a lot of room, the weird inability to MF in AF/MF mode and AFC when AFS mode selected.

I just returned my MJPEG settings to default since I only got write errors "card too slow"

if I put an empty 8 GB card inside the GF1 I get over 1 hr of AVCHD time and 8 minutes of MJEPG time!

?????

Can anybody say anything more about the 20mm pancake lenses focus behaviour?
I upped the FW to 1.1 but it still behaves incoherent.

Otherwise the pancake is excellent! Glad I got it. But I want to be able to AF and MF at the same time so with AF/MF ON I want to be able to move the focus ring while in AFS
but its not happening.....

If you increase bitrate on mjpeg it will eat more hence less recording time, bigger files etc

does any one know if any manual controls on the GF1 are being looked at for the 3.37 or 3.38 release. the following would really help me

lock shutter speed to 1/60
lock gain added to None

Let's hope Vitaliy uses the GF1 purchased with donations to forward development of firmware features on this camera :)

Currently there are no issues on the GF1 with setting and locking the ISO.

As far as locking to 1/60th, I would use shutter priority mode, set it to 1/60th, and then I would enable Auto Exposure Lock at which point you can spin the EV compensation slider to set aperture (or you could just use a manual lens).

While better manual control would be nice, it's something you can do right now with the GF1... I'd be much more interested in other enhanced abilities, such as 1080p AVCHD, or proper 24fps.

I agree with Sumita - it is possible to use GF1 video in manual mode. Just need to understand AE_Lock.
1080p 25P AVCHD is more important.

i still cant achieve manual shutter by using the s mode.

the camera settings:
aspect: does it matter (mine is set to 1:1 as that is what i take photos in)
quality: does it matter (mine is set to RAW as that is what i take photos in)
af/ae lock: ae
af/ae lock hold: on
preview hold: on

the lens is panasonic 45-200mm lens set to
auto focus - on
mf assist - on
shoot w/o lens - off

so i select 1/60 in shutter 's' mode, hit af/ae lock and press the video button. but when i inspect the footage back on an external monitor the shutter is never 1/60, it has recorded clips from 1/30 indoors in low light to 1/320 in direct sunlight even though it has always been set to 1/60.

if someone has had experience with the manual shutter 'setting' and 45-200mm lens, please advise me.

could anyone with the manual setting working on other lenses post a link to a sample of the shutter at 180degrees on GF1 footage, with the corresponding jpeg preview made in camera. it would be great to see it and really help me out! - no other angles please.

Do you have Auto ISO on ? I used the GF1 with a 25mm manual lens, and can confirm that the manual mode works.
I dont have a sample but this is how I tested. I stood in front of a lamp with all the lights off.
First I pressed AE Lock before recording and then turned the light on. The camera did not adjust exposure and the rest of the footage was blown out.

The Next one, I exposed for a bright light, pressed AE Lock and then shut the light off. The rest of the footage was all dark - pretty much blacked out due to a lack of light.

The camera did not change exposure.

I have not used the pancake lens on the GF1.

zcream, thanks for getting back on this.

this test isn't telling you that the shutter is being set to a specific speed, only that it is being set to a FIXED speed. the shutter could have been set to anything by the camera (within reason) and the same thing would have happened. i'll explain

if the shutter speed set by the camera to 1/30, and the gain is set to 0
or
if the shutter speed is set to 1/120 and the gain is set to high
the results of both of these settings would show the same effect that you see

this is similar to all other results i have seen from the gf1 'manual shutter' speed tests, like adammada's test a few posts back, yes the shutter angle is fixed, but not neccessarily to what the operator wanted to fix the shutter speed at. for example, has anyone got a test showing shutterspeeds lower than 1/30 on a 30fps gf1?

my intention is to use the gf1 for broadcast nature stock video for nat geo, discovery etc, at the moment using 100mbits 4:2:2 (DVCPRO equivalent). for these channels 25p or 24p is not a priority.
Until we have a fixed shutter angle option, i can't really shoot broadcast video on it.

to know the shutter speed in which the camera records you need to do a mjpeg video and the jpeg attached will give you the shutter in the exif data.
I tried to record an old tv with 1/50 here in pal area an some times it worked and some times it didn´t worked for me its not 100 percent safe this S mode.
I know there are some people that swear by it but what can I say.
cheers.
And I do hope the GF1 finally arrives Vitaliy because it has already been bought.

tested the following to no joy, they all are unstable. so '400 10' is still my best setting

test 400,05
all q to 400
all t to 05

test 400-500, 10-25
q.400,430,460,500
t.10,15,20,25

test 400-430,10-25
q.400,410,420,430
t.10,15,20,25

has anyone got the 20mm 1.7 pancake? please test '400 10' (all q. 400, all t. 10) for me as my lenses do not resolve as highly as the pancake lens. after the error has been tripped once, is it stable till camera is switched off?

next test series: 400,10-100
all q.set to 400
t. 10,25,50,100

try lowering your q settings every time. There is a theory where it says that if the first q settings fail in writing speed it goes to the next one, and then the next one and so on. So try 400, 350, 230, 180. t4
