Getting a Caon 7D, what should I get for this money?

Hey there guys. First time poster, but you can be expecting to see a lot more from around here.

So I've just managed to scrape together £1600. ($2,505.76)

With this I can get a H4N sound recorder for £279 $(436.94). So that leaves us with £1321 ($2,068.82).

Now I can get a Canon 7D (body only) for: £1039 ($1,627.18)

or

a Canon EOS 7D with 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Lens Kit for £1198. ($1,876.19)

My question is, which of those should I get? Or is there a better deal out there.

And what should I be looking to get with the remaining £282/£123 ($441.64/$192.63) I'll have left?

Thank in advance for your help guys.

get a t2i and u'lll have even more $$ to play with :)

remember you will need the basics of an extra battery and fast cards which can eat that remainding $ quickly. get the t2i and u'll have enough for 2 decent lenses from ebay :) .If you in fact "scraped" that $$ togther you owe it to yourself to make it stretch as far as possible.

Sorry I'm unfamiliar with a 'T2I'. Is it as good as a 7D (I'm guessing not seeing as it's so much cheaper) and if not how big is the difference?

What are you planning to shoot? I skipped the kit lens on my 5D and picked up a Zeiss Contax/Yashica 25mm and 50mm lens with adapters that are 2.8/1.4 and I love them.

Everything and anything really. I work for my Uni's TV station but it's all volunteer based. One day I might be shooting a documentary, the next a gritty urban drama. I never really know!

I'll second the t2i (possibly 550D, depending if you're across the pond or not). If you're using it to shoot video, you won't be seeing a difference. UNLESS you plan on shooting through rain or other wet areas. The 7D is built for that (I'm not saying soak it, but it can handle a little water). The t2i, not so much.

H4n - $300 USD
T2i - $800 USD
Canon 24mm-70mm IS f/2.8 - $1300 USD

That's $2400 there.

it's the Canon 550D.

all but the same video quality as the 7D. more money left over for lenses, tripods, sound recorder, etc.

build quality isn't as good. but it is still good.

as for lenses: personally, i'd get fast primes. but that's me. depends on how you shoot.

if you need one general purpose lens, get a Canon 17-55mm, or a tamron 17-50mm.

and i hope you know all the drawbacks of dslr for video. if not, read up on it. it might or might not fit your use.
