Gasp! (Interesting Canon 5D & 7D rumor)

I still don't understand what you mean. AVCHD is still long-GOP H.264.

if you compress h264 poorly it looks like crap regardless of bitrate.

the 5D doesnt compress it well despite the high bitrate. Lots of bad food is still bad food... just lots of it.

a dedicated AVCHD camera compressing h264 with a well designed compression circuit will look better even at a lower bit rate.

Timurcivan, not sure what you're comparing the compression to or what cameras you have used, but the 5ds codec is one of the better out there this side of the super high end. On paper it might not look great besides the bitrate but in practice it does. Also you're only partially correct in the food comparison - think of it this way - the more food you get served the more likely it is you'll get the good stuff.

HMC150 footage loks way less compressed...... WAY less compressed. HDV looks way less compressed....

the 5D footage looks beautiful because of FOV an DOF and a relitvly grain free image....., but all i see even at low ISO is macro blocking and compression artifacts. i would NEVER use the 5D for anything that isnt going to web.

That isn't keeping others from using it for projects bigger than web delivery.

Is it "good enough"? In the right hands, it seems that it is. Could be it better? Most definitely - there is a lot of room for improvement in terms of OLPF, image processing, and compression.

It will be interesting to see if this rumor pans out. And if it does, whether it pans out to true RAW (which would be a pain in throughput and storage considerations), sRAW (which isn't so good looking), CinemaDNG (about which I know too little...), or something proprietary like REDRAW...maybe CANONRAW? Who knows!

I would love for this rumour to be true, and if it is then this add on unit will be EXPENSIVE!

It'll be aimed at a small niche market and professional filmmakers.

The 5D's codec isn't that bad... I am considering moving over from the GH1. If you wanna see a bad codec then look no further than the GH1. The 5D is a hell of a lot better in terms of compression artefacts and noise.

I expect this add-on would need quite a major firmware update too. At the moment, what gets delivered to the 5D's compact flash card slot is certainly not raw. This add on would be hardware which communicates directly with the sensor or DIGIC4 chips, bypassing the encoding chip altogether.
