Gasp! (Interesting Canon 5D & 7D rumor)

Nice find Josh! Hope that it's true....

I will be happy with the 7D in the meantime, but if theres a RAW module then **** gets serious.

Sorry guys, but I just dont see this happening for the 5d or 7d. Future generations sure, but I doubt we will get RAW on the 7d.

I would love to see it, but am way too skeptical.

This would also necessitate a firmware update...opening up the pathway for a Magic Lantern on the 7D ;)

Sounds too good to be true though

Guys, my source tells me this is definitely an external RAW RECORDING DEVICE of some kind. It does not go to CF cards at all.
As far as I understand it now, the “device” is a stand-alone recorder module that receives “uncompressed” sRAW data at 1080p from either the CF card SLOT (via some adapter cable I assume), or from HDMI, or both.
It’s possible that this recorder could even do 60fps if uses a very fast SSD, for example. Who knows, maybe the 1D4 will shoot high speed 60fps? I hope so!

So. I truly believe this is going to happen. I am partially guessing this because my contact at Canon (high end video camera person) recently told me that his entire department was being reworked.

I think it will happen like this. Canon does away with all video cameras (already announced that XL series and XH series are discontinued) in favor of making DSLRs with HD video and an optional breakout box that could be used for high end video production (as discussed on REDUSER).

The product in question would hopefully be a solid state device that also included all necessary I/Os needed for high end movie production. This would also make sense of the 10 bit 4:4:4 info being spread around by the French guy. I'm think HD-SDI, timecode, HDMI, the works.

If they could price this box competitive with let's say an AJA Kipro ($3K) it would change film production.

I aint sure about anything..."the worlds being turned upside down"....
ive been watching these forums thinking...7d?!..what about canons camcorder section?...they would be stupid to not be designing some most excellent camcorder thing.

It sure would be nice if the rumored RAW record module had a couple xlr inputs and time code.

Not entirely logical, since that would suggest the the h.264 processing were taking place on the CF card which would make no sense. On the other hand, if the bottleneck were the recording speed of CF cards rather than the interface, and a really high-seed connecter was made available, that would be...interesting.

I am sure of one thing only.....

when there is a vacuum of information, we fill it with whatever we want.

I dont mean this as an insult cos my imaginations running wild re this 29th sept announcement but its sounding like a wish list.

Well - not to burst your bubble, but as many have already said before - odds are the 29th announcement has nothing to do with photo/video gear.

And the latest grumblings about the upcoming event support that idea also:

UPDATE
It has been pointed out that the people involved in the presentation are in fact from Canon Business Solutions. This makes the chance of it being an EOS product remote. CBS does handle printers though, there could be something new there for the photographer.

And from Flickr:

most of the Internet chatter has been about a possible DSLR launch on September 29th. Some have even speculated that Canon might be coming out with a digital "Cinema" type product to take on RED.

WRONG!

Even a cursory Internet search of the Swedish names listed in the invitation will reveal that these folks actually work for Canon Business Solutions (CBS), which handles office products; not Canon's Consumer Imaging Group (CIG), which handles the cameras and camcorders. Consequently, the odds are pretty good that this Sept. 29th launch will be for a copier or some kind of a multi-purpose office solution, not for a "RED Killer."

Sorry to burst your bubble. If there's any consolation, Canon Business Solutions does handle large-format printers so there's a slim (25%?) chance this could be somewhat photo-related.
