GH5 Game Over, Panasonic

Nope. Not a fallacy at all. A recorded image that is closer to the actual scene information is technically superior. Visible artificial sharpening, visible artificial noise reduction and visible compression artifacts are all inferior to a signal that has not been molested by that processing.

Do you wear glasses? Do you adjust the diopter on your EVF? Which is the "real" image? Glasses on or off.

So you have your raw data. What do you do with it? Post it as is; projected it untouched? I hope not. You process it. Yes, you have more control over that process if that is what you want, but you still need to process it.

And to think that the infinite reflections of light can be guided down a tube using optics, deposited on a sensor before anything else is done, that somehow that is a semblance of reality, is in itself a huge fallacy.

I will grant you accolades for one thing. Your use of a term that potentially subjects an image to psychic damage with implied immorality is a tour de force, a line worthy of a great novel.

Bravo.

Look, at the end of the day all we have left, at any level of artistic endeavor is this. Do I like the image captured and does it serve its intended purpose.

Becoming pointless? You mean it always was pointless. Its a bunch of arguments going in circles trying to apply hard science to something subjective. Like are blondes or brunettes better to marry. If either makes you happy it really doesn't matter.

Obviously I disagree and don't think image IQ is that subjective.

I do agree that cameras like the GH5 capture a great image and RAW and prores are becoming less important, other then the from the preconceived notions in people's minds.

annyways,

To me the Fuji XT3 is more of a competitor to the GH5 and GH5S as its a true hybrid camera thats offering 10bit recording.

The reason Sage is able to visually match the GH5 so closely to the Alexa is the GH5 is already close....the much touted beautiful image out of the Alexa comes very much from what the camera is pointed at and who it is operated by....the design, the lighting, in fact every aspect of the image has been tuned by the best in the industry...some image design may vary, but the image is extremely polished both outside the camera, and then after in post. That the "lowly" GH5 can produce some of the lovely images it does in one person's hands is a compliment and speaks volumes of Panasonic's abilities. Never magnify an image 400 percent!....nobody watches movies that way...collect lenses instead of cameras...if you look after them they can be timeless!

Can anyone confirm that the internal ProRes codec is 10bit? The only reference in their spec list is 10bit for HDMI out and if you look at the data rates for the internal ProRes codecs they look very low for 10bit. I just assumed it would be 10bit as it's a BM camera but.....?

Prores is only a 10 bit codec I believe and the data rates are very large as they are I’m megabyts rather than something like Panasonic’s 400 megabits which i think was something like 50 megabyts.

ProRes can be 8bit as this is what my external recorders save from my Sony A series cameras but I see that they do indeed use megabytes which are 4x as large as mbits thus the data rates are not low - thanks for the correction.

ProRes is 10 bit for sure.

Looks impressive. I am for sure going with the XT3 at this point after hearing it will have 120fps 10bit.

I've really wanted to play around with RAW video though, only have ever dealt with H254 and H265. Its tempting. Maybe I'll pick up the original pocket cam one of these days.

I have also been taking a serious look at the XT3. Its a fascinating little camera. Its the 29 minute record limit that really kills it for me. It may have a larger sensor but I doubt that would equal any better usable low light performance over the GH5s. Especially when one also factors in a SpeedBooster on the GH5s. Price is nice compared to the GH5s but that 29 minute record limit really kills it. I'm also not ready to replace my entire m43 lens collection just yet.

I have also been taking a serious look at the XT3.

I've long been a fan of Fuji color science. Lack of IBIS is the biggest spoiler for me, along with a few other lesser issues. But Fuji have been making great strides in the video department, and maybe the XT-4 will finally do it for me.

Simply put, neither my GH5 nor my GH5s can achieve an image this thick. It's not the time of day, nor the model, nor the grade.

This is simply richer than what my GH can do. A lot like a great hand made instrument or plugging into a great class A tube amp with a great guitar. Yes, content is king, but you get a VERY big grin on your face when the first note you play...just one note, sounds heavenly.

I like that from a camera/lens combo. This is the first image I've seen that makes it clear that there are some cabibilities within this camera that are simply visually far beyond what the GH cams can do.
