GH5 Game Over, Panasonic

Even though I think BM cameras look better than most of what's on the market, the lenses used in these various Pocket videos are really important to consider.

The "Bubble Gum" video could have easily looked different with other glass. (Contax Zeiss' were used for it.)

I have also been taking a serious look at the XT3. Its a fascinating little camera. Its the 29 minute record limit that really kills it for me. It may have a larger sensor but I doubt that would equal any better usable low light performance over the GH5s. Especially when one also factors in a SpeedBooster on the GH5s. Price is nice compared to the GH5s but that 29 minute record limit really kills it. I'm also not ready to replace my entire m43 lens collection just yet.

Fortunately most of the glass I used on my GH5 was vintage full frame, so I can transfer it to Fuji. Auto focus was a big determining factor in my switch, thats where Panasonic is really lacking. The record limit is definitely is a bummer, though I rarely need it. I am still waiting to see what the low light performance is going to look like on the XT3 but I agree it won't beat or probably even equal the GH5S. I still held onto some M43 lenses incase Panasonic ever pulls me back.

Guys what stands out to you in the bubblegum video? The dynamic range? skintones?

I personally don't find it overly impressive, but just mentioning how lenses can really contribute to a look which someone finds pleasing.

Everyone already knows that, ha, but it's just amazing to see people praise and disapprove a video for the same and different reasons.

"Skintones look great!" --- "Skintones look terrible!"

"I love the colors." --- "I hate the colors."

Simply put, neither my GH5 nor my GH5s can achieve an image this thick. It's not the time of day, nor the model, nor the grade.

This is simply richer than what my GH can do. A lot like a great hand made instrument or plugging into a great class A tube amp with a great guitar. Yes, content is king, but you get a VERY big grin on your face when the first note you play...just one note, sounds heavenly.

I like that from a camera/lens combo. This is the first image I've seen that makes it clear that there are some cabibilities within this camera that are simply visually far beyond what the GH cams can do.

I don't see anything in that video that couldn't be achieved with a GH5 in V-LOG/HLG with a descent grade. I'm not saying the P4k is not better but there is nothing there I can see which shows it to be markedly superior. Now if it had been shot on the original BMPCC......

You clearly must not know how to use the GH5 then. That video is nice but I'm not sure how you can say it is superior to what the GH5 can do. I still see these as about equal. You are clearly hyped about this camera and that euphoria helps you love what you see.

Please provide some specifics and side by side comparisons so we better understand where you are coming from.

I think the bubblegum video looks great. But if it had been presented as GH5s footage I do not think anybody would say anything. It should be a great camera and also great pressure on Panasonic to improve or lower the price of the GH line. I can totally see Panasonic going for some kind of RAW capture in the future. That has way more use imho than 8k.

Since we don't have cameras in hand, we can't provide side-by-side examples, but you can bet I will as soon as I receive mine.

I've been shooting the GH5 since it was released, and it has served me well, but it can't record an image like this. To be sure, we're talking about subtle differences, but the GH5 doesn't handle detail or dynamic range in the same way, even if you record out ProRes to an external recorder. The pre-processing of the image is different. ALL cameras do some amount of processing (RAW isn't *truly* RAW sensor data) but Black Magic's version isn't as noticeable. It gets out of the way. Panasonic's processing is more obviously artificial.

You can't prove what can't be done, only what can. With all due respect, there is little reason to think you could be up to it.

You may be right but how many years ago did we think 10bit 4:2:2 4k would never be in a dslr/mirrorless form factor? With a 24bit XLR audio adapter.

I think this IS a viable form factor for real work. Why not commit and dive into it head first. There is already the expectation for RAW stills in every still camera since 2005

Its hard to say what is coming next. They are definitely pushing for more resolution so probably 6k 4k 120fps. I don't really see 8k being prosumer friendly as most people still struggle handling 4k files in editing.

12bit color maybe. Who knows.

External RAW would be more possible than internal, which no one else has besides RED and Blackmagic (and Digital Bolex...and DJI if you count them).

They are all outside-the-box thinkers...not necessarily competing with each other like Panasonic - Canon - Sony - Nikon - Olympus.

For everything else, you need additional hardware.

So I don't see the GH series getting internal RAW before like a 'Varicam LT 2' or something.

From the footage I've seen, the Pocket 4k is superior to the GH5. But lets wait to see some side by side comparison to know for sure.

From the specs alone it should be superior but by how much is up for debate. It's not like the GH5 or GH5s are seriously flawed in any way so the margins for improvement are going to be small in pure image quality terms. Grading flexibility with RAW is another matter as is the lower performance hit on hardware from ProRes.

There is a pretty big difference between grading RAW GH5 image stills and GH5 video (for me at least). So if that is the difference it should be pretty noticeable.

Exactly, and anyone who has manipulated a RAW still vs a JPEG knows how true this is. We don't have to wait for side-by-side comparisons with specific equipment when we know how the underlying technology works. There's a lot of apologetics going on here about PQ in order to rationalize brand loyalty or ergonomic or workflow preferences. Those preferences are personal, and personally valid, but they don't change the fact that the P4K records a better image.

Yes you have more manipulation latitude but if you properly expose and colour balance v-log or HLG and know how to grade it properly the end result isn't going to be that different. I worry people may be expecting too much from the P4k in terms of image quality.......

I agree, Panasonic might not want to affect products above the GH line but in my view, RAW is easier to grasp than V-LOG shooting. If BM can put internal RAW recording in this camera, then I do not see any barrier to a GH series camera from a technical point of view. Once they made the GHs variant, a commitment was made to video specific users of this series. I think it will be game on once the market likes the BM camera at $1,000 less. Panasonic can add IBIS and better AF to keep customers or lower the price. They would probably rather add features than lower the price. But I might be wrong.

Lets not go into the whole IQ debate again haha.

The RAW will definitely be easier to manipulate though. Obviously dynamic range but also white balance and its 12 bit color. Same with noise reduction and sharpening at higher ISOs.

An advantage of RAW pictures on my GH5 is dynamic range though. If I am shooting a scene with high dynamic range and need to raise shadows a lot in post, RAW is much better.
