GH5 Game Over, Panasonic

That is my take also. I already have the Small HD Focus Monitor, waiting on the BM Pocket Camera 4K.
Cheers

Question about power.

If a Canon battery is 1865 mAh and runs up to 60 minutes is it safe to say that a USB-c power brick with 10000 mAh could run for up to 5 hours? I realize 60minutes may be a very liberal estimate and may sometimes only be 30 minutes based on usage. If that were the case would the power brick still manage 2.5 hours?

Using velcro to attach a power brick to the camera is not optimal but I think it might not be too cumbersome. Could the internal battery then be used for just hot swapping of power bricks?

You're probably in the right neighborhood time wise. Attaching a USB battery won't be much more cumbersome than attaching the audio unit to a GH5. And that's discounting all of the other battery options that already exist and all those that will be custom designed for this camera. It has 3 different power inputs! I can't believe anyone is seriously complaining about the battery. There are already many ways you could power it away from mains uninterrupted for an entire shooting day.

Note that the early reports of clean images at high ISOs are with NO noise reduction, making it all the more attractive. Unlike the GH-series, NR and sharpening isn't mandatory.

I think I will get one. That purity approach from BMD has always appealed to me. The big thing is, what is the OLPF situation?

That is the one thing holding me back. We keep talking about perfect color quality but other image based artifacts like aliasing and moire are vastly more distracting to me and to common viewers then slightly less accurate color for pushing a grade hard in post. People will notice aliasing and moire. Only hardcore video geeks notice color inaccuracies on the GH5. I personally find it unacceptable that a camera solely designed to shoot moving image would not use an OLPF.

I realize there are after market solutions but by the time you add this you are getting much closer to the cost of the GH5S. Especially when you factor in the need of more expensive SD cards and alternative power systems. Not only do you need larger/more SD cards but you need much higher rated/expensive cards for the Pocket. In the end I think cost wise it will all balance out if one has to also buy an OLPF.

But you can run a fast USB-C connected hard drive on this thing, that is sure to reduce the media costs. Might need a small array of spinning drives to keep up, but large SSD drives are coming down in price every month. It was smart to add the USB-C media option.

But I agree that I am going to wait until I see the images from a real production version. Hopefully they fixed the moire issues that made the third party manufacturers make the OLPF additions. It would be so easy to include it as it is produced, even if it can be swapped by the user between one optimized for 4K, 1080, and none (clear glass) like some other cinema cameras. Let the user decide how clean the image should be before capture.

Yes you can use a SSD drive but the files are still vastly larger than 150mbps 4k on the GH5. You can shoot for much longer on a smaller SD card vs a SSD. ProRes HQ is 5x larger than the 150mbps on the Gh5 for roughly similar quality. A 256GB SD card would require a larger than 1TB SSD for the same record time. That means you need to buy a 2Tb SSD to record as long. Plus a SSD may not be very practical for long form run&gun projects where the drive could accidentally get disconnected. If one wants to use a USB-C power supply I’m pretty sure they can’t use an external drive as well.

Of course HD is always an option but then isn’t that compromising the quality vs what the GH5 can do in the same space?

Pretty much this. I am more interested in the E2 Z cam at this point. Although the BM Pocket 4k is amazing.

Hmmm... The Blackmagic website states that you can charge the battery using the USB-C port, but NOT that you can power the camera via the USB-C port. Which is why there is a 12 volt 2-pin LEMO connector to power the camera.

I just ordered a Tether Tools Case Relay Unit for my GH5 camera, that appears to be an electronic inverter that raises the 5 volts from a standard USB battery brick up to 7.2 volts to power the GH5. It's a nice touch that they have a built-in 1200 mAh battery for the unit so you can swap USB battery bricks without having to turn off your camera.

I wonder if these folks would build the same type of unit for the BMPCC 4K camera that would convert USB 5 volts to 12 volts power for the camera ?

I film weddings with the current Pocket. The Pocket 4K will only make my job easier.

You do realize the files will be 4x larger than the Pocket HD? That’s a huge cost increase for a wedding. Not just in terms of shooting but editing and archive as well.

If you wanted to run n gun this I see a few option in terms of making a mini rig with some hawk woods battery (gripper, or sticky) and a USB-C SSD with velcro or other screw mount to get it all compact. Alternatively, you could run a longer d-tap + USB-C into a vest or belt pocket with your SSD and battery.

The smallHD focus would be great for a swivel screen, though unfortunate to have to add another piece of kit and power draw when you've already got a 5" screen being powered and present. I really wish BMD could've designed a slick swivel screen on the back of this.

I am also curious about the physical switches. Looks like a great screen UI but some more physical buttons would go a long way, that is one thing that is nice about the GHx line.

I think for me, the VFR options and robust feature set and codec options on the GHx line make a lot of sense. Also the bullet proof nature of the GHx line is killer, I've put those things through hell and they keep kicking. Nervous that I'd be able to say the same on BMD.

I definitely hope this camera starts a war in this space though. Would be great to see more frequent updates to this line from BMD, and an aggressive GH6 offering from panny.

Frankly I see these as similar but very different tools with unique strengths as well as unique cons. If they were priced evenly (or if you are price insensitive) it's sort of a toss up. The real magic in the offering is the price point. At which point, it really pressures this segment, and makes the very reasonably priced GH5s look overpriced. Something of a feat.

Well of course the file sizes will be bigger if he wants to go 4K from his 1080p pocket. Amazingly he's got a dozen recording options from 4K to 1080 with different data rates to choose from.
