G2 Users Settings and Experience

I'd just like to confirm some settings, hopefully this will help.

General settings Working
- All Interface Languages
- 30mins Limit Removal
- Manual Movie Mode

General Settings No Working
- PAL <-> NTSC Menu,
When this is enabled video will not start recording no error messages are given on the screen
- 720p30 420 -> 422 Colour Sampling
Causes the bottom half of the image to have red noise and ghosting all over the image, this occurs when applied to both default MJPEG settings and Ipowells Reliable In Camera Playback patch settings.

MJPEG Settings
- Ipowell's 35Mbps In-Camera Playback settings
Does not work, Causes bottom half of the screen to have red noise and ghosting all over the image.
- Ipowell's 60Mbps Class 6 SD Card Patch
Seems to work well, does not play back in camera as expected.

AVCHD
- Ipowell's 40Mbps AVCHD High Reliability Patch
Settings do not cause any errors however Data rate is down at 11Mbps
- Ipowell's 50Mbps Fast Action 3-Frame GOP Patch
Settings do not cause any errors however Data rate is down at 13Mbps

All the above settings have been tried in combinations to try and eliminate the possibility that it is the combination of settings that causes the error.
The videos have only been tested for a max of 10mins at a time (depending on settings) and using both recordings of a action sequence on a TV and In room Camera shake.

I'm a little bit confused as to why Ipowell's AVCHD settings are producing such low Data rates so maybe someone could shed some light on this for me.

If anyone has any suggestions or settings they would like me to test please let me know.

I measured the Bitrate just now.

For AVCHD, with lpowell's 40Mbps AVCHD High Reliability Patch, the average is 27691 kbps and the peak is 36310 kbps.
For MJPEG, with with lpowell's 35Mbps MJPEG In-Camera Playback settings, the average is 3462b kbps and the peak is 35455 kbps.

I've got a G2 now and will have an opportunity to do some testing this weekend. With AVCHD patches, to obtain high bitrates you'll need to test with well-lit, sharply-focused, high-detail scenes. It is normal for AVCHD bitrate to drop to 12Mbps for indoor scenes illuminated with incandescent light.

BTW, it's "LPowell", thanks.

Could you please try the 422 color sampling patch first? Since everything else looks fine to me.

G2 Manual Modes

G2 Manual Modes

Hi.. for the G2 patch, the enable Manual modes. Does this allow choosing of ISO when shooting video in Movie P mode? Normally the ISO cannot be changed and defaults to AUTOISO.

thanks

Yes, auto or manual, execpt in M mode only manual, no auto.

G2 Manual Modes

G2 Manual Modes

I tried the hack with the enable manual mode selected. after flashing my G2, I still dont see any way to change the AUTO iso ... I cannot manually choose ISO for movie...

Am I doing something wrong? Any help appreciated.

Hi Finback, I'd like to recreate your results for the AVCHD data rates, could you share how you got these data rates, what were you filming?

I downloaded the G2__V11.bin firmware from Panasonic's site and successfully upgraded my used G2 with it. Video recording worked properly in SH and HD modes both before and after the upgrade.

I then used the latest version of PTool 3.51d on the V11 firmware with my Reliable In-Camera Playback Patch:

lpowell - Reliable In-Camera Playback Patch.zip

After installing the patched firmware into the G2, it failed to enter video recording mode in either SH or HD modes. Its only response to pressing the video button was to briefly display a "Please wait..." message on-screen. Reinstalling the V11 firmware restored the camera to correct operation.

There are clearly significant differences between the GF1 and G2 versions of certain patches that will need to be resolved before the G2 can be reliably hacked.

I tried the hack... it worked for a while but after about 15 min of taking movies, i suddenly get an error message about the G2 not being able to take any more video due to reaching file name limit or something like that.. it happened for 2 or three times, and only resolved after I turned the camera off and then on again... slight glitch i imagine..

Just got my G2 and can't seem to get the hack to work. When I hit the record button, it would not record and tell me to wait(when set to avchd, it kicks it back to HD). Unless I am not saving the file right. When save a firmware, it will not let me save everything in caps, only the bin, ex. G2__V11.bin. I thought from gf1 and gh2 that everything is cap. Please help!

If anyone of G2 owners want to see fixes to some problematic patches we need to perform extensive and systemetic testing.
First, we need to find patch that causes "Please wait" message during recording start.
Next, 422 patch problem. In this case we need to undestand that changed in G2. We could try different sizes with 422 enabled to see if problem is size related.

G2 uses different, newer LSI.
And as far as I can tell, they rewrited some parts of MJPEG implementation.
422 patch seems to be correct.
So, I really do not have any idea that can be wrong.
Try to use size patches without 422 sampling and see if this works.
Also try to use default mjpeg quality and 422 patch only.

I think the size patch works. I tried the following experiments:

1. 1920x1080. The camera won't record, says my card is not fast enough. The card I use is a class 6 Lexar platinum II SDHC card.
2. 1280x720. The camera can record.
3. 1440x1080. The camera can record.

Hope this information could be helpful to you.

Reliable G2 Settings

Reliable G2 Settings

Hi... I've tried Lpowell's 40Mb/s patch and some other settings mentioned by other folks. I still dont get reliable settings. Once in a while my G2 will freeze or refuse to power off..

Has anyone been able to achieve a reliable set of settings for AVCHD?

As far as I know the 422 patch problem is not size related. I tried 422 alone (nothing else). It still didn't work.

No, I mean slightly different thing.
Set 422 patch.
And try to reduce frame size. And later to increase frame size.
