G10 vs XA10 - Audio AND Lanc Considerations ???

Ok so i understand that the XA10 has XLR input and will also do Lanc. So now, here's the heart of my question . . .

1. Is the G10 audio input only take a mono mic or is it stereo?
2. If stereo in 1.) above . . then, does the G10 have the ability for mini Jack audio input . . that is can I use a Y adaptor (splitter that splits CH1 and CH2 to two mono channels) that I can plug into the Audio IN on the G10 and then plug one of my Sennheiser EW G3 Series lav's into a left channel and another Sennheiser into the other channel?
3. If something is plugged into the audio input on the G10, like a mic or dual mics as noted in 2.) above, where does the lanc plug into?

What I'm trying to figure out is if i HAVE to have an XA10 to have audio input and LANC or if i can live with a G10 and get 2 channels of audio IN . . PLUS . . LANC also. For what I do I have to have two separate audio channels AND Lanc.

Thanks in advance for all the folks here who are helping me with my decision making on the G10 vs XA10 with a struggling budget from a former collapsed organization.

Wait a few days and it's HG20/25 vs XA10. They're stereo in (as is the 10), and for the price difference between the HG and the XA you can buy a field mixer with twin XLRs and have money left over.

really? this sounds like an awesome option. what would be the best value mixer that hopefully uses AA batteries and maybe has XLR in's and audio jack out that matches up with the G20? i'll definitely wait. when will the g20 be out?

A good option, although what i realy like on the AX10 is the handle with zoom on it,never worth the extra amount alone but having to zoom with the lcd is not nice.

isn't there a rocker on top near the back for zooming? also, most of the zooming we do is with the libtec zoom controllers which we will be using when its mounted on any piece of hardware.

Yes there is,with handle on it tends to get ignored but is practical without the handle or on a g10,i like this cam but how can Canon justify the large amount of extra money,i fell for it, very expensive handle if XLR is not wanted,

well the idea i think is that they recognize that most pro's want the xlr input. for me i don't want the weight and size. im looking for small, lightweight, and inconspicuous in some cases and when i need the XLR i will have an external mixer that is way better than an "on camera" mixer (like on the handle of the XA10, because you normally have more than just two channels of input, normally have phantom power that does not use the cameras battery, and strapped on your side it's less weight on the steady cam operations or handed off to someone else the audio job is delimited from the camera operator once the original output of the field mixer is mated up with the camera once.

so i will definitely be going with the cheaper G10/G20 . . will certainly wait for the G20 since it has a few extra features as I recall reading . . like for one i understand an improved low light and some kind of digital zoom and improved digic processing or the like. not sure on all these latters just guessing from some reads i raced through.

btw, one of my reasons for wanting the G10/20 over the XA10 is that i have a Canon case that I picked up at Best Buy for like 64 bux and two G10/20's will fit in the thing along with a manual and other paraphernalia which if you know my current filming style, it's lightweight, small, quick load, small load, for everything including photo and video cameras. in fact, when i picked up the Canon 5DM2 with a couple lenses and a Canon backpack, i suddenly realized i could basically soft backpack or shoulder bag my whole operation . . hence my reason for seeking a lightweight small tripod (under 5#) in another post . . which i have found one at 4# with a fluid head. im ordering it later in the week to see how it functions. :-)

Using my new Rode stereo video mic pro http://www.bhphotovideo.com/indepth/audio/hands-reviews/new-rode-stereo-videomic-pro-hands-review i get clipping on the audio in windy or even moderate wind, also a loud clip sound between pauses happen at times, this also occurs with an Azden mic i have, with the on board mic this does not happen,is this cam not suitable for external mics in the wind.i get clipping on the audio in windy or even moderate wind, also a loud clip sound between pauses happen at times, this also occurs with an Azden mic i have, with the on board mic this does not happen,is this cam not suitable for non XLR external mics in the wind.

wow, i wonder if anyone else has experienced this also? also, wonder if the sennheiser MKE400 does it? that's the mic i was going to go with. i use only sennheiser or audio-technica brands for anything mobile mount or wireless . . . shure for handheld.

now after fitting the dead kitten that i used with the previous heavy Rode stereo mic i had its a lot better, some wind noise but the nasty clicky sound seems gone, the proper http://www.rodemic.com/accessories/deadkitten must be bigger around its a struggle using the one from the metal RSVM.

oh i would have guessed you already had that on . . whoops sorry i did the assumption thing. yeah, any time outdoors ya always gotta have on a fuzzy cover even the foam ones don't do the job and will give the "poof" sound. i use one almost exclusively outdoors on my at897 for film/movie work and the only times i won't hav one is indoors and even then i have on the foam cover.

Yes true but a bit strange that the onboard only has the wind sound not the clicky interference foam externals have.

yeah that is totally weird. the one thing i have not heard from anyone about regarding the audio part is about the ability of the G10 to receive "stereo" (ch1 and ch1) inputs . . i.e.. mounting up two sennheiser (or similar) lav's through a Y adaptor cord to get two different audio channels into the jack.

can anyone comment if the external mic jack is mono or stereo and if stereo can a Y adaptor be plugged into it which separates CH1 and CH2 so that i can input two channels of audio?

The external jack is stereo, there are adaptors like you mention available i am pretty sure.

absolutely AWESOME !!! that was my only concern. YES !!! thanks for that info. i can easily do the audio then without concern via the mini plug concept. ima using an external audio mixer that i need anyways for audio mix control and was going to use that to feed the G10/20. so looks like i'll be ok :-) i want little to nothing mounted on the camera to keep it lightweight as possible.
