FX3/FX30: FX30.. is this the answer!

Wow, that is crazy. Kind of changes the dynamic. If one leans towards video this would be a great choice over a mirrorless unless you needed gimbal. But why not get both? Go for a cheaper mirrorless.

I own the C200 which is the little brother of the C300iii let me explain my opinion of those cameras..

The C300iii with S35 manual cine glass and a competent first a/c can make amazing movie quality images I am very sure.

Im very suprised low budget drama/film schools/poor countries are not skipping onto C200 C300

Sadly this is not where my commercial offer sits

1) EF lenses fit almost anything from alexa to sony.
The EF mount on the C200/300 (which procludes the use of a 'speedbooster') and S35 sensor really does not sing if you own fullframe glass.. even if it is EF glass.
My C200 I really only use with my 18-35 stigma 1.8, nothing offeres the DOF zoom range of the 'basic' fullframe 24-70

1a) Canon rf24-105 2.8 and others are exellent lenses that you cannot even rent to put on an ef camera

2) If you want to remote control on a device the cat 5 connectivity on the C200/300 is sht slow, the cameras are not listed on the Canon apps and dont have usb3
(you can buy a complex lanc based canon control box now used for $1000.. but that eats into your C80 budget fast! and has not forward compatibility)

3) Auto focus is poor.. this means that you will need an a/c.. which adds significantly to the day rate (Im assuming I as operator might be doing something complex like using a gimbal or jib - so need an a/c or decent af)

4) 'puch in' to check focus is poor so MF operation is extra stressful unless you add a monitor

The C500ii I operated last week also has a weak punch in so MF was scary.

(The punch in on the r6i is excellent and re-sets your standards)

Compare this to the FX30 being 'the answer..'
-can use a speedbooster
-usb 3 app connectivity
-24-70 available, 20-70 available
-competent autofocus
-decent puch in
-also $3k
-no ND
-600g

Chris ..

No mention of how canon control that lens.. or if the 1.5x can be remotely engaged.

Juat more evidence that the 'consumer' 24-105 2.8 and zoom solution are going the way of the 18-80 canon ef

And the app is not ready for the real world

Re your 2/3 lens setup, it is manuial focus.. but more evidence that making a work ready setup need to be a 'cludge' and a very nice one :)

Seems like USB and a fiz motor hold good hope,

Did I manetion that my R6 is working well over USB and im gonna put in some hours with that! Im trying the R80 next week.

Good one! Keep us posted. BTW with the B4 setup you can get a remote focus unit to go on the lens. Allowing you full manual focus from a remote position. Canon's 1.5 x optic is only engaged if you need to cover a FF sensor. It's not remotely controlled. Though you could use it as a 50% mag while shooting S35. Though generally speaking in my experience if you are shooting with a wide zoom and need the width on a crane or jib it's very rare you would need a 1.5 or 2 x doubler. Also bear in mind engaging the 1.5 x means a 1.5 stop light loss. Which in low light concert and stage shoots can be a setback.

Good one! Keep us posted.

I cant remember where we got to.. I drove 50miles to a canon day, they could not get the app working and did not have a zoom motor (even though this was requested)

I had some handheld time with the C80 and feel no love at this point, there was some confusion about if face recognition only works 'inside the box' .So often I was seeing two boxes on screen to focus 'in'

Projecrt R6 and nucleus nano focus motors is coming along .. total cost me $0

Generally Im a fan of AF.. (unlike your 2/3 lens offers)

Mainly because ..
-a solo operator jibbing or gimbal running pulling focus isnt really happening
-a dedicated puller is some £250+ day and needs feeding transporting and putting up and fitting into a small vehicle.
-one can only pull focus when one has a decent monitor with few reflections.. often not happening in a car
-personally I think AF is best - not for hard core emotion drama - but pop bands and racing cars

The r6 solid bottom to take focus motor torque..
