This is a great miniseries. I remember seeing this a few years ago, mind boggling that this was pulled off with CG. I think that says more about the calibre of the actors though...

Yeah, I remember watching the BTS at the time the show was on and blown away at how much they did, and how seamless it all was. Great series..a little laggy in the middle...but very good.

Excellent series from one of my favorite networks for originals. I want an HBO commission really badly! John Adams probably had one of the biggest digital backlot implementations ever.

The Physical backlots weren't any slouches either.
The ship was constructed in the old AMF building and then taken apart to the Powhatan backlot.

The Hanover backlot was nothing short of amazing

The stone crew was the best I've ever seen

When they plugged all that into the FX it like stepping back in time.
Cost a bundle though.

I don't think they did quite as much. They actually built a huge set in Spain or Italy I think, which is part of the reason it got pulled off the air. It was too expensive.
The CG definitely wasn't as good in Rome, even though I enjoyed that show more than John Adams. The CG blood and guts spilled during the battles always looked fake in Rome.

I am very impressed to learn how much of John Adams was CG, because without knowing any better, I would have guessed that they were shooting on actual locations with lots of extras. Everything on the show looked "real."

I really really liked Rome, mostly because it stuck to historical fact, which is almost nonexistent in period pieces these days.

I 'heard' it cost almost $10 million an episode at one point because of the sets and locations.

You mean the fact that it was based on one paragraph of Caesar's Gallic Wars? They took quite a bit of poetic license with it. :)

Though it's a great series and really well done.

Yeah... there's very little 'historic fact' about anything that predates about 300 years ago. The rest is just brief and unconfirmed records or writings. The bible is a great example. Most of it was compiled, edited and even written hundreds of years after 'said' events took place. Even records from the middle ages are scarce and questionable.

Either way, it was a good show.

Whether Rome was factual or not, it felt authentic. It was very different from most other portrayals of Ancient Romans.

Oh, I loved that show. Of all the HBO series I think it has the most satisfying story arc. The 2 seasons feel like a complete, fully rounded unit. Deadwood was great but all over the place and kind of ended nowhere. Same with The Sopranos.

My personal favorite was Carnivale... at least the first 18 episodes of the show. The last six episodes of the series were crap.

Carnivale was great too, but as you said...what I liked about Rome is that it felt complete.
