Hey all..

Long time no see, primarily because I have spent 5 months as the editor of this music documentary.

A Nashville State of Mind

In the summer of 2007 we went to Nashville Tenn after some friends in a band from Miami moved there and where amazed by the unique community of artists.

The documentary looks at what seems to be a truly one of a kind community that creates this completely supportive and creative network of writers musicians and singers in all genres of music that force one another to grow and improve. There is no back bitting, no clicks no "My band is better then your band" The only competition is forcing one another to get better and when one of them "makes it" they bring along as many of their friends as they can.

The majority of the film was shot on 3 HVX's, two of which were fitted with PS Technikd adapter and zeiss prmes with additional HDV MiniDV DVcam 16mm and 35mm images sprinkled through out.

Currently there is no DVD release date though it is anticipated. For now the film is making the fetival rounds premiering at the Nashville film festival in April.

Below.. you can view the trailer and if you have myspace... feel free to add us (I actually designed the myspace layout as well)

As always.. comments are welcome and appreciated, and thanks for taking a look.

Well done trailer with great visuals and editing. Maybe it's just my failing ears,
but some of the segments lacked audio clarity.

Interesting the conclusion of a music community working together without backbiting. A look at the musicians category on Nashville Craigslist gives a totally opposite impression - but maybe all the hacks go there to vent. I moved to the area two years ago and love it.

I would watch the film. The music sounds great. You guys found some very talented people. Let us know when the DVD is available. The production value is high and the editing is hip.

I loved the editing. How did you put in the transitions? Is that after effects? Was it done on final cut or avid? Any plug ins?

wow that was awesome. i didn't want to stop watching the trailer. filmed beautifully also. i also would love to know what femmedirector asked. transitions, effects, etc :D

I agree. Looks great and would be a great flick to watch. What's your plans for distro and I think one of the cable networks would go ga-ga over this...

CHEERS

Absolutely gorgeous. I really got a great vibe off that.
The live stuff you shot was really clear, some great rich blacks with (what looked like) zero noise. Nice!
Also, as mentioned before, the sound went from amazing to kinda rough - I guess that's gotta be hard to control on a doc, but for all the interior stuff, did you get mixes off the desks? or use rifle mics or what?

One slight down point for me was that I thought all the 'grunge' layers and all the flicking around was a little overused. You had interesting enough shots there just to let me look at them.

I'd be really interested to see the full version.

Great work.

Really cool stuff. Great vibe. I loved how the text was overlaid off-center with the black bars. Creative and cool. The whole thing has a legit feel to it. Who edited?

Great video. But you may be interested to know you have a typo. In the one scene with text that says, "In the summer of 2007..." the word "filmaker" should be spelled "filmmaker".

Not trying to be picky or anything. I know if that happened to me, I'd want to know.

All the best. :)

Wow.. things have been hectic and I headed off thinking, "Man no body is interested" then o a whim decided to check back

Thank you all very VERY much for your kind words and questions.. I will work to answer all of them.

I will address them in no specific order as best I can..

One consistent question was about the editing.. Who edited? Well.. I did. I was lead editor on this project. One was brought in early to arrange footage and help layout separate time lines for scenes (I was out of town on vacation at the time) I came back after he had been there a week and jumped on. The two directors would occasionally do a cut of say a liver performance or create something of a template structure of a segment (sometimes doing light editing, other times just pulling good responses and putting them on a timeline to be arranged and edited by me) This film was in post for almost 6 months.. everyday grinding away, trying very hard to make a documentary not like every other one out there.

We agreed from the start editing was key, and it made me happy because editing a doc can be very straight forward and often is, but can lend to some very cool and unique stuff if you are creative. It was decided early that we needed "boxes" as it came known to be. Really just picture in picture but we wanted to get creative with it.. all different shapes and sizes (as is evident in the trailer) We cut and re cut and threw out and changed and manipulated and moved around scene after scene after scene.. as late as last week I was back helping make a few minor changes to the film. Festivals are good for audience feed back and we are trying to make it the best it can be as a result.

The whole thing was cut on final cut. As for transitions.. very VERY little plug ins were used. We used one camera flash plug in from Effect essentials and some dissolves, otherwise everything was created organically (that is an industry buzz word but kind of funny, no plants or living organisms were used) but we built them using some stuff from the evolutions and riot gear packs from video co pilot. But we used a good bit of old film stock overlays and played with different opacities and effects in final cut (IE: Selecting "overlay" or "Difference" on the film clip to create radical changes to the image)

Even the text introducing characters was something of great consideration. we wanted everything to feel interesting and original not just some standard lower third.

Color grading was done in Final Touch and we really went for a sort of older stock 35mm and even super 16mm looks.. some colors popping, others washed out.. Also the grunge layers are not used as heavily in the film as they are in the trailer.

The audio:
There are some rough patches in the trailer audio not found in the film. The film was re mixed and cleaned up, but the shots of the guy giving the bathroom tour had music overlay so I had to use the raw and we just did not have a mix done of the trailer yet, but we will before anything major is released.

As for distribution that is deff something of interest. The execs want to do the film festival circuit first.. see if they can't get some interest that way. I can tell you when one is made it will have TONS of extras.. so many great performances did not make it in that will.. so many funny clips and interesting things we just could not include.. Hank III will have his own little section LOL.

Nexis: Typo was caught an another version of the trailer was already cut to include a few more festival acceptances. But thank you.. we see things so many times our eyes tend to glaze over.

Brady: Brooke Waggoner IS great!! I have not had the pleasure of meeting her, but joked during editing I wanted to Marry her simply so she could sing to my children

That said thank you all.. I will deff kep you posted and if there are any further questions do please feel free to ask.

UPDATE!!

Well we had a very warm reception at the Nashville International Film festival. The film played to a sold out crowd and was very well received.

We even got some really nice local and national press (links in our blogs on the documentaries profile. link below) and in addition to be accepted to several more film fests (updated list coming soon) and we have even started receiving requests from film festivals which is always nice when they are seeking you out.

Lastly we have been approached by a company wanting to do "A Nashville State of Mind" memorabilia for sale in the airports locally as well as tourists shops in Nashville.

So come have a look if you like

Congrats on what looks (from the trailer) to be an inspirational piece in terms of content and production.
I think after you watch something as well made as "A Nashville State of Mind" you almost immediately forget that your are watching as opposed to experiencing. Really, really nice and all the best with the fest circuits.

Excellent visuals. I also feel that a little more audio mixing could be done. Make sure all of your levels are the same. Great though.

Thanks again everyone.. and once more, while this version of the trailer has no audio mixing the feature has been fully mixed and some of the rougher audio cleaned up. We are continuously making small changes to the trailer as new festivals come in ect.. so as soon as everyone agrees on a lock we will do a full mix for the trailer as well.
