FWS-01 (buy it!)

so uh I'm a jerk. I promised a review in June and I am just now getting around to it. For the 15 bucks I spent I would have easily spent 45-50 on it. This is one fantastic piece of rubber. It held up well in FLorida, as well as under the west texas heat and sun. I have very thouroughly tested this accessory and can honestly say it is the best accessory I have ever purchased for my HVX200. I am kind of mad at my self for not thinking of jrigging something similar with gaffers tape and similar components. I have not had another firewire dropout on the firestore since I put this thing on. Great job Siniarch! If I could only find a better way to mount my firestore I would be a very happy man!

Wow Timothy,

Thanks for the review. I've since raised the price to $25 since I'm ordering in lower batches so that I don't get stuck with large inventory. But I'm sure I'll get a few more orders thanks to your plug.

As for better ways to mount the FS-100, check out this thread:

I'm going to be offering a mod for the FS-100 where you can make the Hard Drives removable. To that effect, I will also sell these mounts so that you may put your FS-100 on the same rail system that you hvx is on. I've also included a way to mount Tekkeon Batteries, which will power the FS-100 for about 5hr each.

I will also have an LCD monitor out shortly. check it out at:

Thanks again, and I'm glad it has worked for you.

Sincerely,

Luis Sinibaldi

AAAARRRRGGGGGRRRRRAAAGGGARRA
so I'm shooting today all day, and I couldn't find my FireWire Saver this morning and its not like people were going to wait for me to get it. So we are filming on the FS-100 and everything is working like a charm. Next to last day shot, I move the camera from point A to point B and BLAMO!!! the FS-100 won't work. It wont feed to the FS-100 nor will my computer recognize it. Needles to say this is day 2 of day 10.
Does anyone in LOS ANGELES know of a place to get this fixed right away?
Thanks,
Luis

Wild. So it's leveraging off the "strength" of the 1/8" headphone jack? Interesting.

If there was some way to mold the rubber piece a bit more creatively, I'd suggest he extend it just a bit on the top because there's a screwhole about a half an inch away; if he could mold it such that it was form-fitting around the block and extended over to the screwhole so it could be permanently attached that would be bulletproof. Even so, sounds fantastic for those who are concerned about their FW ports.
Hey I bought one of these, the price has gone up, not too much 25.00 now. It does seem to help but I'm still have problems it can't fix. I've been trying to make some money shooting rock bands. But the vibrations seem to cause the little pins that make the connection, come apart then back together. So my footage then looks awful and is unusable. There's breaks in the video but it never stops recording, like if the cable came out or the connection was bad, then you get nothing recorded. It all looks good on the LCD screen, no way to know it's bad till you play it back then it's too late. Anyhow I think we AG-HVX200 users need to make our voices heard! Several times now I've called Panasonic and talked to various people that agree it's not the best design. But say they've not heard of any problems with the 4 pin connection! "There's not a service bulletin out about it" is was they say. We need to get a petition started or something to show them. Today I told someone @ Panasonic about the many people complaining on various forums about the 4 pin troubles. He said oh we've got people that monitor those forums we'd know about it. He mentioned this one by name. I told him about firestore.ning.com. I have a FS and that's the only reason I use that 4 pin connection. Now here's the real kicker this fall their coming out with a new camera that is the same, but has no tape recorded and will have a 6 pin connection on it! So they must know what a pain this is and should change our cameras over to 6 pin connectors. They could do it if they wanted to. I can't use my FS-100 for what is the best way for me to make money right now. I don' have any P2 cards and can't afford all the extra stuff I'd need with them. That's why I bought a FS-100! So why need make our voices heard!

Hey Randy,
I hear what you are saying, and I do agree that the Firewire 4 pin connection is awful. That is why I made my product.

And believe me, I have spoken to a few Panasonic employees about the issues and they are aware of the problem. The employees that you spoke to might not be aware but most of the ones I have contacted are. If they are monitoring this site, then they are obviously not doing a good job because it has been posted here many times.

Now for your problem. I don't actually think its an issue with the Firewire Connection. I have spoken to a couple of people experiencing this problem. I believe is an inherent problem of a hard drive recorder in addition to the poor shock absorption on the FireStore. Hard drives have a mechanism that pick up the reading/writing needle when a shock is detected. This is done not to scratch the plates of the hard drive. Its a safety mechanism. Unfortunately, in a Rock concert the audio levels are high enough that the hard drive safety mechanism engages and it is not able to record. this would produce the skipping problems you are encountering. :(

Again if the FireStore was built with better shock absorption, this would happen less, but it might still happen.

Hope this helps.

Randy, check out this thread for some tips on reducing the vibrations on your firestore. This isn't a cable issue AFAIK; my firestore has skipped before when it received a shock to its case.

looks like i'm too late. paypal says,
"This recipient is currently unable to receive money."
hmm... has anyone else had this problem when trying to order?
