Bare bones G5 2.3MHZ and FCPS

I'm very new to editing on a computer but eager to take the plunge and start on the learning curve. I want to be ready for the future, HD, so I have quotes coming in for a:

G5 2.3MHZ Dual Core
8GB RAM
500GB Harddrive
256MB SDRAM Graphics Card
Another FW800 cards for one of the PCI slots
Fast Video Card like ATI x 850

My question is what are the minimal amount of other programs that we will need to run FCPS and upload our footage etc...(most likely shot with an HVX200 both in dv and P2). With another old but perfectly functional Mac in the house mail, surfing, research and word-processing is covered and we have no need for any other programs at the moment.

Thank you very much.

You will have most of the things you need in Final Cut Studio but you'll probably want to install Photoshop and After Effects at a minimum.

Whatever you do don't BTO your mac from apple.com - they charge outrageous prices for ram and HD upgrades - the video card upgrades are on par with retail prices, however.

true dat. i get all my ram from this guy http://www.gimcomputers.com/

cheap cheap cheap. you must pull the exact memory specs from the apple site or your owner's manual though. this guy only lists by ram type, not mac type.

funny thing, apple used to let you downgrade your mac on the BTO. i once bought a G4 which retailed at $3500 for just over $2000 because i went in and took the ram and hard drive down to the minimum and got rid of the internal modem. their ridiculous upgrade prices then became generous downgrade discounts. unfortunately, by the time i went to get my G5 a couple years later, apple had figured out this little flaw and stopped it. bummer.
