We're shooting from 8pm to about 6am everyday; so meals are pretty much not needed..
So not only are you not paying people, you're not feeding them either...

You expect them to go out and work for you for 10 hours without a meal......I suppose no craft services, either?

They're eating dinner before 8pm, and they'd have stuff on set like sodas, but not a full meal.

Chapel is right... we had to go with a DP who owns his own RED One and a lot of media equipment (he's fantastic and creative, by the way, but the point is we replaced my normal DP) because we simply couldn't afford to pay a DP and then pay for rentals, so we needed someone who comes with a package and could at least give us some discount on the regular rental prices. It was a life-saver to the budget.

Even on a small indie film, though, there are a LOT of line items in a budget, even if they're tiny. Even if it's $300 here for these misc. things, $500 there, they add up fast.

Just read through this... I have to say 60,000?.. I would love to have this budget. For equipment?... I don't believe that you need that MUCH equipment to shoot what you are shooting first of all. Maybe try and lower your costs by lowering how much equipment you are wanting. I don't understand why you would need 3 cameras. 10 EVP recorders. and so on. We do ghost walks and investigations like that and that is way overkill.. You should go back to the beginning and re-think everything.

Well, I honestly don't know how you could make a feature for much less than $50k. But that would include feeding everyone, which the unions and guilds would require anyway. In the past we've asked a lot of our crews but this crosses the line. Now, I'm not one to criticize without offering a solution. Your producer should be on the phone getting meals discounted or donated to the production. That's what we did and it went a long way. Chipotle and others gave free meals. And this is in Los Angeles where the local businesses couldn't care less that you're making a movie.

There's 15-16 people in the film, that will break down to 4 groups of 4 or 3 groups of 5. I want at least 2-3 audio recorders with each group. I want an equal amount of cameras and emf meters with each group too. I want atleast 1 Sony A1U on each group at all times. And don't say recast, because I've already promised parts to people, that I can't break.

I understand that you have a "group".. but keep in mind you are filming a movie.. not doing an actual ghost hunt. and the 10 recorders could be slimmed down to only a few.. So the un-needed equipment could save you alot of money that could go in other areas..

I love ghost hunts.. actually a film I will be working on is set around a place close to me that is haunted. It is a town that no longer is there.. There is said to be like 10 differant hauntings from the years.. Thsi location will not cost me anything to shoot at though. I am thankful for that

Fail to plan, plan to fail... remember this.

By the way, not to get all nitpicky on you but you call yourselves the South Jersey Ghost Hunters. There's a very dedicated group here in Toronto that researches paranormal activities and I once expressed interest in joining their group. They're very serious about their work and when I asked them a basic question using the same term "hunters", I was quickly corrected. They don't "hunt" ghosts, they research them only and are very careful about it as well.

I'm not sure how deep you are into the paranormal or investigating the supernatural but I'd be very careful if I were you doing this. Hunting implies you are going after them for sport... you may find yourselves the ones being hunted and inviting a whole mess of problems if you don't tread into this very, very carefully.

^^that would definitely pay off.

especially since i still don't see any mention of a business plan.

Really what's the point of a business plan? I'm trying to avoid investors at all costs.

But anyway, I'm shooting a short this coming weekend, if I can get studio space somewhere.

a business plan, my friend, is not only to benefit investors. it's a PLAN to GUIDE you through the pre-production, production, and post-production/distribution. it's a way of making sure you did your homework. it's a way of making sure your time spent won't be for waste. it's a way of making sure you'll know how you're going to be compensated for your time/money/effort.

it's EXACTLY like a MAP to guide a traveler. if you don't have a map, how do you expect to get where you want to be?

people hear business plan, and think investors. but it's not only for investors.

simple question: how are you going to get back the $60k? how are you going to make a profit?
are you actually setting out in the hopes of finding an actual paranormal entity? is that it?

We're self releasing to at least 40 theaters, if we can't make back at least 60k...then I really f'ed up somewhere. In fact I've already been talking to the owner of a 17 theater chain.
