Wait for Avid Vista or just go XP?

I'm looking to purchase an editing system and was wondering what everyone thought about operating systems. Should I wait for Avid to work with Vista, which could be months and months, or just go with XP and edit now but which will be outdated before Vista?

Does anyone know when Avid and Vista will work together?

Vista is a dog.

If I were configuring a PC system for Avid today, I'd do XP.

I wouldn't even install my checkbook program on a Vista system.

I was on with Avid Tech support and they said it would be a while before vista. From my personal experience vista is a TURD, XP is stable. Wait to make money months from now, or get cutting now,? Tough choice

This thing on Vista's bugginess and unworthiness is getting a little bit over-exaggerated than it actually is.

As a former IT specialist and current director-producer I can tell you what I actually make of it, as I've been using XP for media work and Mac's for quite some time, also I can tell you some things from a user's perspective...

My current system consists of a quad core Intel with 4gb of ram, Blackmagic HD extreme and lots of RAID storage, with CS3 Prod Premium as my main edit and Post tool, using Windows Vista Ultimate x64 bit. Been using Avid and Edius in the past as a side note...

Windows Vista is currently the best windows operating system I have used and I'll tell you why...

1. Much faster on the same config than XP
2. Better memory management
3. The best viable x64 bit windows operating system to use right now.
4. CS3 is taking advantage of the extra memory without tweaks in .ini files (you know this from AVID products as well) and with constant driver development.
5. Better folder management
6. Better security
7. Decent mail application
8. Global contacts system, much like OSX
9. Raid actually seems to be a little faster on Vista
10. The search feature copied from OSX... saves lifes.
11. Wacom tablets work better in it.
12. You get to run Maya 64 bit really-really fast...

And many more.

Vista is not "there" yet and numerous incompatibilities do exist, but as a whole you get more in efficiency and performance when running latest hardware. As a proponent of Apple's logic which is actually optimizing software to run on the same hardware Microsoft's logic is not the best, but as an operating system Vista has all the potential and with time it will be there...the ME comparison does not stand in my view...Avid on vista will be the best windows based Avid.

My 2c...

But the question was, work now or wait for Vista? I have no doubt that Vista will catch up, and Avid will migrate to it (making it more robust). If you need to start cutting choose XP now, then upgrade to Vista later. The money that you make now will more than pay for any upgrade costs.

i know it's nice to have the latest thing, but an XP avid is going to be rock solid. even more stable than on a Mac.... in my experience.

I agree Running AXP on WIN XP in my experience has been more stable than our MAC OS

64 bit, you bet. It would be awesome if you could render & import stuff into bins, work on cg's, mark I/Os, etc. Wonder if it will allow the MCA true multitasking when rendering?
