Fujifilm X-H1 coming?

If you're going to NAB we ought to meet up for a beer or something :)

Unless someone is willing to pay me large amounts of money to go, I avoid NAB like the plague. I went beginning in the late 80s for fifteen years. I am done with trades shows generally, I don't see the value of them. Most of time the booth reps are fairly uninformed, I hate crowds, I despise Las Vegas and I can usually get more relevant, timely and accurate information via the web and watching all of the eager beavers who like to go to NAB and conduct interviews on the trade show floor ;-)

I work for a journal, so I make money covering it, and I get to meet people that I wouldn't otherwise... some who have helped me develop my skills. So I do get value from it, though moving to Vancouver will probably get me more of those types of contacts.

Had some hands-on time with the X-H1 at the roll out in LA last night and spoke with the Fuji engineers. Love Fuji color science, 5-Axis IBIS worked really nicely, but the camera is beefier than the X-T2 and heavier, not necessarily a bad thing for video shooters. Yes, all 8-bit recording, the HDMI out (Mini HDMI, ughh) is even 8-bit too. They claim heat and processor limitations, it's the same processor that is in the X-T2, but tweaked. Nice camera overall, the new Eterna film stock emulation looks more cine like than all of the Velvia/Provia modes. Engineers claimed 12 stops DR in all modes, I am skeptical but would be cool if it was true. Also does DCI as well as UHD but DCI only at 24 fps. No 4K 50/60p is disappointing. They did also add some good tweaks to the focusing features for video shooters.

Fujinon seems cautious and methodical as far as why doesn't it have this and that feature. They are working toward a real digital cinema camera, the X-H1 is a tentative step toward it. Also, keep in mind, this camera costs considerably less than the GH5S, the other mirrorless video-centric camera new to the market. Personally I think they should have made it $2,500.00 and gone head to head with the GH5S as far as specs. If they did, this would be a better camera overall.

Excellent writeup, thanks Dan!

Anytime Matt. I will probably cover it more in-depth for a big article I am writing comparing the X-H1, GH5S and how the melding of still and video cameras is still taking place, even though the DSLR is about over since hardly anyone wants to shoot video with DSLRs anymore. Will probably compare what $1,800 to $2,500.00 would also get you in a video camera versus mirrorless, there are a lot of strong entries from Sony, Canon and Panasonic in that range. It's a great time to be breaking into the business as far as gear value for dollar, although as we both know, much harder to make a living in the business than it used to be. Thank goodness Millenials are largely not as motivated by $$ as our generations because they aren't going to get rich in production ;-)

Man, there are a whole ot of truths in this paragraph.

If you are in LA today, Fuji is here at CinemaWorks in Burbank, doing a touch and try with the new XH1......so come on down!

A head to head with the GH5s would require 10bit and I think that is a bridge too far for most companies. Plus the Fuji still has a time limitation on 4k recording. It is pretty tough to beat Panasonic's engineering along with their willingness to lay it all out on the table. Would be great to see but the GH6 and GH6s will be pretty tough to beat when they hit the streets.

i Had a chance to view some of the footage coming from the new fuji x-h1 and have to say that to my eye the color reproduction, along with motion and it's orgnic look trumps the gh5 and gh5s. It just looks so much more pleasing. For anything narrative I would not hesitate to shoot with this cam for its look alone.

Yeah, yeah. My question is, how is it in low light?

The "perfect" camera is not out there, and there might never be, but I do think that for most people, depending on what they want to use their camera for, there does come a point of "good enough". If you want to use a smallish camera for narrative work, you have at least these three choices: The A7SII, the GH5(S), and now the X-H1, why pick one over the others? Depends on how you intend to shoot, and so, f.ex., if you need a lot of low light, A7SII might be the ticket, but if you want something that can get you the most flexibility, what would you choose?

Nice! Love the image... would love to see the print in person :)

4.5 feet, eh? Hm... I'm thinking about moving from my Sony A7r with a rather limited lens selection (meaning that I own very few) and switching to the Fuji kit largely because of the lenses, and just want to be sure that should I choose to do that, I wouldn't be sacrificing print options due to the lower resolution.

I guess I can always just use my Epic-W for cases where I need higher resolution. ;)

I tend to agree. I have been shooting with the GH5S for a review and while the images look good, the intense noise reduction makes things look unnatural at higher ISOs and the color science, while an improvement over the GH5 and a huge improvement over the GH4, doesn't look as pleasing as the Fujifilm skin tones and colors in general. Too bad the X-H1 is only 8-bit 4:2:0 recording. Not the end of the world, my C200's .MP4 is the same but it seems to hold up pretty well if you do your part with exposure. I loved the color science on my old HVX200/HPX170/HPX300, wish that Panasonic could put those colors into the GH5S and the GH6. The GH5 is good as far as color, but not great. I didn't have a chance to shoot with the X-H1 yet, I am hoping to soon, but I have shot with the X-T2 and it's color are very nice. Same imager in the X-H1.
