FS7: FS7MKII vs C300MKII-same price! which one would you choose!?

I just want a camera that I dont have to spend 20 minutes fiddling menus if I want to change frame rate or picture profile.

It doesn't take more than a few clicks to change the frame rate or picture profile. Sounds like you didn't have the custom user menu setup properly. You can put any functions I need on a single top level menu page.

yeah, i dont know maybe I need to spend more time with an FS7 , but this was my experience. Plus I only shot in CineEI , not in custom so not sure if that contrbuted to my confusion. I find the F55 side panel thogh super easy to use and intuitive, with the FS7 had the same....

Hi,now I have a price offer for both FS7II and C300II for about the same price.Which one would pick? I already have the FS5 with raw and Odyssey7Q+. I will be using the camera for my projects and will be renting it (C300II or FS7II). Many colleagues here in Italy have the FS7,lots of people have chosen the FS7 here like in the rest of the world!
If you were buying today, and the FS7II and C300II are same price which one would you buy!?

I skimmed the (good and only slightly religious) conversation so far, but did anyone mention the fact that you already own a FS5?

Having two FS cameras should make it a breeze to color match (in theory; I haven't closely compared FS5 and FS7 image), switch and share lenses & other peripherals, just remember the basic menu structure and operating proceedure, etc.

Me, I own a C300 but end up working with Sony and Canon and other cameras (Arri when I'm lucky). All have their place, as everyone constantly says. Seems like in your case keeping it all all Sony for now makes a lot of sense.

If you're still undecided, which is totally understandable, can your dealer give you a weekend demo or rental of both so you can spend some quality time with the cameras and the footage from them? Maybe ask to rent with rental cost applied towards the camera you buy.

Good luck! Let us know what you decide to do.

"i just would not buy fs7II, i would get FS7"anatusa

Hi,thank you for replying.I've been offered a very low hrs used and in meant condition FS7 for €5,200 so buying the "old" one used is almost half the price of FS7II and is the best option right now instead of new FS7! BUT I MUST buy new, unused, and can't explain the reason here! and buying "new, old" FS7 & not FS7II at this moment is not an option for our company! for me,I would get the used FS7!!

I'd get the FS7ii, the reasons being that I could use the locking e-mount to put my Zeiss CZ.2 zooms on it with a Speedbooster - something I simply wouldn't risk without the locking mount. And having the flexibility of 1-60 frames in 4k.

Hi Jim Feeley, thank you for the advice. I will let you know what i'll decide to do. I hope to take a decision by the end of next week,..at least that's what i promised to the dealer :D

2k/12-bit/444, & improved autofocus, is mighty tempting, but hate to give up the FS7's lens mount options.

Sorta agree with this... though I also wonder about the benefits of the 444 on an h.264 internal codec... would like to compare Canon's XF to Sony's XAVC on same scenarios.
With the e mount - locking and the variable ND now - it seems another consideration is the ability to use cheaper still glass with iris ramping along with almost endless lens options.

Electronic ND on the Fs7ii seals the deal, imo.

Think about it- no more stepped iris and you can ALWAYS be at the stop you desire. You can shoot all day at an f/2.8 regardless of the setting or light changes during a take.

In addition the e-mount opens up a world of lenses. Is there a par-focal servo zoom for under $600 that can be used with the C300? Nope. With the c300 you can't even get into a servo zoom for less than $5k. With the fs7 there are at least 4 servo zooms available for $3500 or less.

You already have the Fs5 and it makes no sense to mix an Fs5 with a C300 on 2-camera shoots, imo. Different cards, different batteries, different chargers, etc. Not to mention different color science. You WILL end up doing 2-camera shoots. Even for simple interviews a side angle provides nice creative options in the edit.

If I am not mistaken the Fs7 gives you more codec options. Oh, and there is the center-scan feature as well.

Full disclosure: I am an Fs7 owner and resultingly biased. To me the C300 is a still camera company's first attempt at a professional video camera. And is shows that it was their first outing. While the Fs7 comes from a company with decades of experience at producing professional video cameras.

Get the Fs7 Mkii and never look back. You'll love it.

FS7 has much better features than C300 which are incredibly useful - Speed Booster which allows for the 24-105 f4 to become a 17-75 f2.8 which is a really great range, 2x Crop (I use this so much for Doc shooting), 180 fps without crop (C300II has 120fps with crop), Custom in-camera LUTS (very useful).

Canon might have a color advantage, but you can get great colors from Sony without much effort at all, but those missing features are sorely missed.

Back when I got the FS700, the original C300 was out of my price range. I used the FS700 and did a bunch of artsy, cinematic videos with the slow motion and all the cool features which got me on the radar of a number of producers and directors in LA, and it really furthered my career as it allowed me to express myself in a way that would have been impossible with the C300 because it lacked so many features. Put it this way, my current career would be much different and further behind if I had went with the C300 over the FS700.

So yeah, if you're really into doing more experimental and artistic stuff, features are a big deal and make a huge impact on how you shoot as it frees your imagination.

My vote: C300 Mk II, even with the price difference.

12 bit 444 2K/HD
No additional cost for RAW output.
Single chassis construction of lens mount and sensor - stronger, more rigid, easier to service.
Wealth of AF features. FS7 II - not in the same league.
CLOG 2 really gets into the shadows.
Better color science, wealth of color spaces.

But let's see the image from the FS 7 II - maybe it's just that much better. Who knows at this point.

I think this Zacuto video perfectly demonstrates what a horrific mess the C300 ergonomics are. Of course Zacuto were excited by the C300 because they knew full well it's impossible to use out of the box like the FS7.

I absolutely could not swap the FS7 for the C300II without feeling like I'd gone backwards with gear. The E Mount and speed booster combo, the LUTs I can load to burn or to monitor with and the frame rates are just too useful to lose, 60/50 fps in 4K is killer by any standards. The FS7 has made me a bit of a Sony fanboi regrettably.

FS7mkII any day really as my FS7 has been the best camera I've over own. I do shoot a lot with a C100 and sometimes on the C300 and to me the ergos and functions on the FS7 suits me better.

+1. The ergonomics of the FS7 is way better than the c300. I sold my c300 after 6 months.
Canon has nice skin tones right out of the camera though

I think for me, what it comes down to is
FS 7 MkII: Love the idea of having all ND's I'd ever need with me all the time. I'd still be missing a polarizer. Love having 60fps 4K slow mo, use it all the time. The new lock doesn't matter to me since I'm on speedbooster with Canon glass.
C300 MkII: Would love the AF. This is huge for me since we want to get more shots with a MOVII setup and could save money on focus puller and gear. I'd miss 60fps 4k no center scan though.
I think I'd pick the C300 and probaby will. I never really was bothered by the ergonomics of the C300 and I love the colors..

To me, i prefer buy two FS7 4k 50P with metabone normal and speed booster + tamron 24 70 stabilized@iris 2.0 constant. The only advantage for canon is dual pixel but no 50p = no canon.
And for auto focus on gimbal i use A7RII with batis 25mm @2.0 for small production or my fs7 with letus hélix magnesium for bigger production. I don't need canon since 6 years because the small FS7 was FS100 1080 @50p. I never understood why canon is limited at 25P.... i use too often slow-mo X2 i will never go back to 25p only for interview. I prefer use illustration plans on interviews anyway.
