FS700, DJI Ronin and Odyssey 7Q

Hi guys

If any of you is wondering if the FS700 and 7Q will fit on a DJI Ronin, the short answer is YES. Standard arms, no XL arms.
The FS700 uses a NP-F970 battery, the 7Q is powered through the D-tap form the ronin. I even got a Teradek Hdmi video link on as well. The lens is a Ronkinon 24mm with metabones speed booster. All ass. from Solid Camera.

Enjoy

this is exactly what I was asking myself a couple of hours ago...how can I mount all this together since I have just received the ronin for my sony fs700 and odyssey....did you use any additional counter weight for the fs700 in order to find the perfect balance?

this looks really neat...probably the best setup of the ronin, odyssey, sony fs700 I have seen...what kind of cable did you use for the d-tap powering of the odyssey...that definitely makes sense...

No, everything is as on the pictures. No extras, however it took me a couple of hours to get it right.;)

A CD neutrik to D-tap.

the one beautiful heavy weight champ setting right there! way to go!

now i really need to shape my body:

look, he looks like 3 axis gimbal himself at 0:15! :)

Interesting way of mounting it all together as a package, rather than 7Q (or monitor) on the top handle... One big pro is you can now balance out the camera properly without any weights added!

I have been 'playing' (spending way too much money) with custom built gimbals for a year all based around the Alexmos controllers, and have found that minimizing the weight on the camera tray, allows you to crank up higher power/more active settings to get better stabilization, without it spazzing/glitching out. So I'm curious to see how the Ronin does with that much weight on the camera tray!

Please post some results soon!

what's the advantage of mounting the 7Q on top of the camera instead of the Ronin top bar? thanks for sharing your experience.

Yeah I can't see a reason for this either.

Not visibility (handle bar would be in the way).
Why stress the motors more (even tho they are heavy duty).

I mounted mine onto the handle and besides weight is pretty good. Only I had was with the freakin SDI link being too close to the back. Tho I did mount with Canon 16-35mm which I assume is much heavier than the rokinon. Tho i guess the 7Q would help offset weight... it just seems like poor placement for me. I'm shooting with the A7s now and have the LCD open for shutter/iso/aperture info and then my small HD on the handlebar to frame.

Actually, just noticed. What 90 degree connector are you using? Seems sturdier than the one I picked up.

Currently looking at this same setup. From those using it, how do you find the footage and stabilizing to be so far?

I finde that mounting everything gave me a couple of advantages.
1 No cable between the handlebar and the camera.
2 the monitor is always visible, no matter if you're in suitcase mode or upside down.
3 give me the possibility to mount my fs700 with different optics and video link, with std. Arms.

Sure the the motors have to work a little harder but as I wrote the entire rig is 8,8 kg. the ronin alone is 4,2.

don't really know what make it is. Just some I had laying around. I'll see if I can find out what make they are.

Hi RaskTV,

Good to looking your setup, could you describe all the items you used for this ?

Thanks !

Hi Alex

I used a Ronin, a FS700 with NP-F970 battery, Solid Camera FS700 top plate, Odyssey 7Q, Solid Camera Ultimate 7Q solution with a right angel dovetail mount, 7Q power cable to D-tap, BNC cable, 2 90 degree BNC connector, Teradek 255 link to iPad with HDMI and 2pin lemo to D-Tap, Rokinon 24mm cine lens, Metabones speed booster.
And 2 hours of patience....;)
Hope is helps, if you have further questions just post in this forum.

I wish the external recorders would have a separate LCD area to show the exposure variables using some sort of meta data passed via SDI/HDMI.

Hi Rasmus,
Many thanks for the details, it's more clear for me and the cost I need to put in for this setup :)

How long can you hold it for tho before its just too heavy.
Not long enough. 2-3 mins and then a small break. Hopefully it will get better with time. Doing a 200 frame shoot on Tuesday for a national broadcaster, it's all about planning and timing. Make sure everything is in order before you pick up "the heavy devil".
