FS7: FS7 Handgrip MOD to ARRI Standard - now available

This retrofits the FS7 grip into industry standard config. Male M6
(maintains the Sony grip "release" function. )

A good mod should create functions the manufacturer didn't forsee.
Yeah?

The tough part is keeping it affordable and with this one in particular, permitting the M6 stud to rotate. An included "chuck" will ship with this gizmo. It turns the stud via holes in the stud cap. Any small screwdriver, wrench or hairpin will do. (Throwing darts work great if shooting in a pub ;-)

I like it. It turns a closed system into a an open one.

Wow!

That's exactly what I wanted to turn my handgrip into.
When can we order this Caleb?

Should we do some kind of group buy?

That looks great! It will unlock an feature many has been waiting for, to make the camera handheld like the FS5!

My only concern is that the camera, with say a Sigma 18 35 and a BPU60 battery will make it quite heavy for your wrists to handle. I could really see this being a great option when I do handheld wedding videos where you can quickly run n gun great shots as long as you keep the camera weight to an absolute minimum.

+1 for a groupbuy to get a good price on this thing!

Erik, Thanks, no group buy needed. I can get yours done this week. If you send your grip in for a retrofit, the male fixture adds $45, or $195 total including return Priority shipping.

Cool Admir,

When you HAVE to shoot handheld in 'heavy' mode (big zoom, lots of gack) that's also when you really want your fist/arm thing 'just right'.
If you can get it right - it's always paying off. Every config, every minute, every day.

Yupp, you better get it right if you want to have workable hands when you get older :).

So, how much would that thing cost that connects the grip directly to the FS7 rosette? I live in Sweden, and I see no problem in doing to modification myself. What be the price with shipping to Sweden?

One more question, once attached to the grip, I guess that it is quite fussy to reconnect the handgrip to the rod on the FS7. Could you design an adapter for the original FS7 arm to connect it with your adapter back on in order to save time on switching between the standard config and the modified one? Hope you understand what I mean!

Admir,

It's $75 as a DIY piece. USPS Priority INTL is $33.95 (6-10 days). Express is $59.95 and says 3-5 days. The screws are VERY easy to strip. I can save the grip if you strip a screw but it's an additional $100.

Sure I can modify the Sony arm to accept the grip via standard rosette- adding a female rosette to the Sony arm.
Price should be $75 which will include the rosette. I'll confirm this tomorrow.

Another good approach, a Sony arm with rosette. Shipping out today for a shooter who likes to use his converted grip with a Shape arm holder.

BRAND NEW DESIGN HERE.

Scott (Customer number ONE!) needed to be in super low profile mode - under 1 inch.
While we were on the phone I measured my part at .8 which he liked but I also suggested I could spend an hour and get it even slimmer for a small charge. I started out to just tighten the waistline but it ended as a complete 2.0 do over.IMG_5240.jpg

It's .25 thinner. From .8 to .6 including rosette. The 4 extending shafts are now gone- so racheting is unobstructed. It's sollid integral body now - fewer moving parts- stronger and lighter- really a silver bullet fix. I'm waiting for some stainless steel parts tomorrow and I'll post final photos. Expect a little splash of color. I expect the price of the retro fit to remain the same at $150 and this new part can be substituted for the original female version- operators choice. I'm going to keep this pricing as an introductory thing basically just for you guys and gals on thread here. Get em now! For DIY, standalone it's $95, shipping included. Easy install. Will come with directions, rosette, everything needed. (Just remember getting the arm off is at your own risk this way)

it's a slick design.

Thanks Cindy- Glad it worked out! Couple photos here of the new gizmo. Just made 10 and they came out well- it's a silver bullet for the FS7.
Three shipping tomorrow, Toronto, England, California. (and one on the shelf for Customer No.2)

The red dot is silicon impregnated acetal that snugs the stud into place and serves as a roller bearing. Trying out some black oxide stainless screws today - I really like this part!

I like that they added a splash of red! but practically it looks about 2X wider. It's about 2X more expensive. And not fitting is a large issue. ($$)
Is that an integral aluminum rosette? Vocas is a good company, but if that's aluminum I'd question it's durability.

Also it's not sporting a cool brass stud! Mine are shipping now, they are .6 inch wide, have interchangable brass studs, replaceable Stainless steel rosettes,
and for right now anyway are $95 shipped in USA. And they fit. ;-)

It's just good to have options... Yes it's all aluminium the Vocas one.

Do you need a tool to tighten yours? It's a bit hard to judge from the pictures.

Thanks on that. Aluminum really is not ok for rosettes, too soft, the teeth lose their bite, the steel rosettes they usually mesh with chew em right up.
My "standardizer" ships with a tapered stainless steel pin, kind of a micro pool cue. It works GREAT - I'll upload an iphone video later.

You can use anything tho, a nail, micro driver, hair pin. Do people even use hairpins? My favorite is a throwing dart- but check these pins it ships with - they kinda rock.
Mini gear shifters.

A video showing the attaching/mounting of the new Sony CRONY. How's that for a name? Sidekick's not bad either maybe?

This is a rush just to show something - we shot a clip today that was a complete bust - gotta reshoot next week. I take great care to light any subject -but with me on cam I never even glance at it (who cares right?) but when I got back to edit I'm like 'oh sh_t. I can't use THIS

so for 175$ you can customize the grip of the fs7 so it fits directly on the body? does the grip rotate when the release button is pushed? is this reversible? or can the grip still be used with the arm (in any way)? is this solution secure enough to hold the weight of the camera just with the grip?
thanks!

Hi Paul, Yes on all counts. It fits directly to FS7 camera body, and yes your modified grip retains it's factory 'release' function fully. It is user reversible (back to factory) in about 10 mins. No alteration/modification is made to the Sony grip- our Crony part simply screws into the existing Sony sockets so that our Crony becomes the modification. You grip remains unchanged. After the Crony is installed you're Sony grip will be ARRI standard so it will not work with the Sony Ext Arm - but- I can place an ARRI rosette on the Sony arm with threaded M6 socket for an additional $55. This requires a small hole for rosette clearance which is under the hood (invisible). The grip and arm will still go back together per factory. Lastly yes it's as strong as the original Sony grip. We incorporate the same mechanical framework that Sony designed so that it's "overbuilt" tough. And I stand behind what I sell and am reachable via text.

this is excellent news....i am on the fence between getting a FS7 or FS5 and the grip on the body was a major selling point of the FS5 up to now....

Gents, quite an unrelated question if you will: you have dismantled the FS7 grip ans saw its innards in detail; can you tell me what my be causing the release button on my brand new camera to stick, so that it requires an excessive push force from me to press fully down, and be able to reposition (rotate) the grip? Is it normal (with my mechanical sympathy to things like that, I don't think so), or is my grip going in to Sony Prime Support?
