FS100 - highlights/profiles

VERY interesting. I didn't even know BM had a CODEC. Is this for their new camera?
I've had great success if taking the 700 output to Samurai and into Davinci. Haven't noticed highlight issues, but we are always VERY careful about highlights, especially on Red.
Keep us posted as you experiment!

Frank, did you check what happens with the BM 8bit 422 material with preserved highlights, when finally rendered to a "deliverable", such as the BD (MPEG2 or AVC), which is 420?

Exactly the problem

Now Im in FCP6 so workflow is different but my observations are..

-creating an H264 causes a shifted file, using the BMD codec does not

In terms of creating a deliverable I have been experimenting with gamma shifts as a final step in post to correct out those shifts

ie a gamma aplication of 1.3 value makes a H264 file similar to the image I see on my TL

EOSHD.COM has a couple of posts about getting work in and out of premier without chainsawing the highs
http://www.eoshd.com/content/8612/mac-avchd-gamma-issues-the-fix

Conclusion: I did go down the BM codec route, but further export to H264 caused issues so I abandoned it!

Further conclusion I am getting nice prores files and will use them for internal viewing or delivery on HD

I would encourage people doing test to have all the apps open at once and compare side by side..

Looks just fine, when I create a H264 from a "preserved highlights" BM master.
All the detail and highlights are there.

Usually I use a stand allone application (Handbrake), but it also works with exporting from Premieres presets.

Handbrake - Ill try that!

BTW it should not be forgotten that if you dont shoot right and apply too much knee the highs are still banded, (you can see in cam) just not chainsawed which seems to be a mac issue..
