fs 700 4k coming ?

Dammit... I should 'ave waited. But I guess one could wait for ever getting "the right" camera :D

Theoretically... if a FS700 is announced at NAB, when would a release date be? I mean are we talking 2012 or would it be more likely to come out q1 of 2013?

That may be why they are not releasing the FS100 firmware upgrade until the last day of NAB.

It may include something that allows the FS100 to better serve as a B roll cam for the FS700, and so they couldn't release it earlier without spilling the beans.

oh man........ oh man..... Time to start saving for this mythical camera that hasn't even been announced yet =P

That or max out a credit card. Either is a valid option

How does one go from 200 to 700? :) I want to know how these numbers are chosen. What was wrong with 300, or 400?

I kinda like 500 myself.

or 240. Don't ask why, though?

Anyone got a time machine?

Hint at the guys in the know.... would I be dreaming if this mythical 4K camera would be able to shoot 120fps at fx 2K? :)

I'm no great Sony fan... in fact, I don't even like Sony images (although I'm warming up to them every so slightly)... but, Scarlet can only do 60P @ 3K, which is not S35 sized.

If this camera did 1080/60, and having the 3G-SDI port option, it's already pretty much sick. Anything more than that would be phenomenal, and I'd have to tip my hat to Sony for paying attention for the past year.

I'm torn on my FS100. I love the 1080p60. I love the resolution. I love the rolling shutter performance. I am not in love the with color processing. Looking through 5Dm3 footage the last few days has reminded me of the things I do love about Canon color space.

My problem with the FS100 is with the reds. I finally narrowed it down. They just work very strangely in different situations and I have a hard time taming them. Now, I am keeping my FS100. There is a lot to love. That said, I REALLY WISH Sony would work on some of their image magic. 4k doesn't interest me as much because, resolution is NOT the problem with the FS100. It's the highlights, it's the color balance, and I have had a really hard time fixing that. ND is a huge plus of course.

If I could have the Canon curves in the FS100 resolution/rolling shutter/etc, it would be a dream camera.

Not "in the know" but, if it were to do something like that, it would almost unquestionably be done by windowing the sensor (just like every other MOS camcorder out there does it). Which would mean that a faster-frame-rate 1080 would come at the expense of shallow DOF. Which, frankly, there's nothing wrong with that, but it sure seemed to cause some consternation among folks who were looking at the Scarlet, even though it should seem obvious...

As in, why isn't it an FS200?

No way to know the thinking going on inside the company, but in Panasonic-speak, typically the number is relatively positioned to reflect the overall power of the camera, so an HPX500 is not nearly the camera an HPX2000 is, which isn't half the camera an HPX3700 is, so maybe they're saying that the mythical FS700 is that many steps up from an FS100? Doesn't mean there won't ever be an FS200 or FS300 or FS400, but that if there were, maybe those would be closer to the FS100 rather than this FS700...

I'm frankly surprised (and not in a pleasant way) that they're calling it an FS at all. That's the designation of the NEX FS100, which I don't care for, I'd really rather this new unit be from the PMW line (i.e., PMW-F3, rather than NEX-FS100). But PMW implies using SxS, and the NEX lineup are all h.264/SDHC, so maybe that's implying that this would be an SDHC cam. Which further raises questions about what it would record to ... 4K isn't in the AVCHD spec, it only goes up to 1080/60p, so presumably they would have to invent their own proprietary recording format, which is probably fine, I mean, what other 4K recording format is there? It's not too likely Red is going to license RedCode RAW to Sony, after all...

That should have been 100 to 700, good catch.

Well then can I have an FS3094409598848347576 please, that might *just* be powerful enough for me :p

How about 1080p internal recording... plus RAW stream over 3G HD-SDI output to SR-R1 or 3rd party recorder for uncompressed?

A couple of choices... 3840x2160 or 4096x2160... record RAW pixels (12 bpc? 14 bpc? 16bpc?) or 4:2:2 YUV? What framerate?

HD-SDI 3G bandwidth is sufficient for RAW 3840x2160 at 12bits per pixel at 30fps or RAW 4096x2160 at 14bits per pixel at 25fps.

Arri Alexa RAW output works in a similar way.

Or the camera could do light compression beforehand - and then push framerates up to 60fps?

Isn't there a SRMaster format that does like 3:1 compression? I'll try to dig up a link.

I would LOVE to see the link... did he mention specs?

Thanks for reporting!

If the 4K is somehow raw out of this camera, no matter how it gets there, that's saying something! I'm curious how you can do 4K for 8K, large sensor... hmm.
Are you kidding? The Scarlet brain is only a couple of grand more than that. Sony and Panasonic could do it if they wanted to, but their margins would be pretty thin. Still, they can buy or manufacture parts in far higher quantities than Red. Bu they also move much more slowly than Red, who came out with a cheapish 4K camera several years ago. Sony only now has the F65, and Panasonic has announced nothing but codecs -- yet.

I'm still pretty unclear as to why 2K even matters. Have people really been fooled into thinking that 1080 and 2K are vastly different????
