FS-100 Upgrade problem

So I just installed the 3.0 update and shot a scene for a short that I am doing. When I open the clips in AVID Media Composer 2.5.3 it gives me an error and wont play them unless I turn off the audio tracks for the footage. "AUDIO::PM_INSUFFICIENT_MEDIA() PLAYER VERSION OF DURATION IS LONGER THAN ACTUAL [508508] (507708)"

Does anyone else have this issue?

What were the settings in the cam and what were the settings in the FS-100?

Without knowing that, it's kinda of hard to troubleshoot.

Check with Focus. It's either an Avid problem, or something is seriously wrong with your FS-100 unit. That shouldn't be a problem at all. What recording mode did you use on the HVX and on the FS? Can you play the clips back ok on the FS to the HVX?

What version of Avid (Xpress Pro, Media Composer, etc) are you using?

What did you shoot to--P2 or Firestore?

How are you getting the clips into your Avid--copying to Avid MediaFiles folder, importing, or through the Media Tool?

Another thing you can try is to check your sample rate setting in the "Audio Project" setting. It should be 48kHz (the sample rate used by the HVX), but it kind of sounds like your project is set to 44.1kHz.

Just got our v3 upgrade, and I've found the same problem that pdsage found. The HVX is set at 720/24p, the FS-100 at "P2 PN", and I tried bringing the clips into Avid Xpress Pro 5.4.6 on a PC through the Media Tool. The clips come in fine, but only some of them would play with audio--about 2 of the 8 or 9 quick test clips I shot. I get the same error that pdsage gets--only the numbers change depending on the length of the clip. From the sounds of it--and I hate to blame the Firestore--the FS-100 is creating audio clips that are either too short or too long in duration compared to the companion video clip. Anyone else finding this problem?

It sounds like this has happened before with Avid and a Firestore model: http://dvinfo.net/conf/archive/index.php/t-21379.html

Hopefully there will be a bug fix for this soon, but here's a quick workaround to deal with the busted clips:

1) Go to "Script" view in your bin that contains your clips. Select all the clips (Ctrl + A or whatever method you choose).

2) Press "T" to mark ins and outs for the full duration of all the clips (you should see the "Mark In" and "Mark Out" fields update).

3) Press "W" to jump to the out points of all the clips.

4) Press "3" to step back one frame.

5) Press "R" to mark a new out point on all the clips.

Now, if you try loading a clip into the source monitor, it will still give you the error, but if you use the Play In-to-Out button (usually mapped to "6" on your keyboard), it willl play just fine. Also, if you edit the marked clip into a timeline, it will play in the record monitor without pitching a fit.

Another more "permanent" solution would be to follow all the above steps, but then use the Consolidate function to move and trim the clips from the FS-100 to your Avid media drives. Not ideal, but at least you shouldn't have to deal with that annoying error every time. Hopefully, a bug fix will come down the pipe soon.

Always something...

More recent and specific to the FS-100: http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?t=69222

That sucks. I just ordered the upgrade.

So, version 1 of the FS-3 had audio issues with Avid
Version 2 of the FS-100 had audio issues with Avid (fixed in Aug 06)
Now Version 3, possibly has issues with audio.

What a trend. Reminds me of the programmers that do work for me. They use older revisions to create the latest and leave out the hot fixes in between.
So you end up with reoccurring issues. Not saying this is the case, just sounds familiar.

What cbrougham says is what I had to do for over 100 clips at one point.
The problem for me was that every clip had different in and out points. Meaning sometimes, I lost the beginning of the clip; sometimes the end of the clip. This took forever but was the only way to use the clips.

This was not an Avid issue being that there were no issues with the P2 cards audio and video transfers. Also the P2 viewer software could view the video on the Firestore but near the end (or beginning) of the video you could hear the audio drop out early; plus the audio didn't match the location in the video. Avid's error is saying the same thing as what I could hear going on with the P2 viewer.

In the end, it was FocusInfo that fixed their own issue.

Cool, thanks for the help cbrougham. I thought that I was totally screwed with these clips and no working audio. I hope that they fix this soon.

I've put in an email to tech support over at Focus... I'll repost if I hear a response.

...and soon...

Just received this reply from Focus regarding the Avid issue:

FOCUS Enhancements and AVID Corporation are aware of this issue and are in the process of resolving it. This issue only occurs for customers who have AVID NLE systems.

So, at least they're aware of it, and hopefully working on it. Does anyone know if firmware can be downgraded to the previous v2 release? I can live without P2 PN for now, but this audio glitch is something I don't want to deal with in usual P2 mode...

I'm sure you can, BUT I'd contact Focus tech support and clear it with them first. I'd assume you can.

No news yet? I got an email from focus saying that they were working on it with Avid, but that was a while ago.

Made Avid aware of this issue back in June 2006 - Doug Hansel of Avid Engineering - still no fix.

Made Focus aware of this issue in January, this year. They said they are working on it. For those who have the chance, check the audio sync to see if it drifts. I have 19 hours of .m2t footage which, after import - with the same error message - gives me audio sync issues.

Considering v3 went through an extensive beta test period, its worrying to see such a glaring issue get through. I can't believe they would have released v3 if they knew about this - more likely they didn't have enough beta testers using Avid.

Help

I just got the upgrade today. I didn't get any instructions on installation and have been searching the files for the past few hours iooking for an installation guide in vain. Anybody got a 1-2-3 steps for me? I have a Mac Book Pro with FCP and FS-100 powered up and attached to it with a Firewire 400. I would sure appreciate your help. Thanks.

It's in the user manual. The disk with the upgrade is supposed to have a text file with instructions.

Copy the Bin file to the FS-100, unmount from the computer. Some menu has an upgrade function you run. Then you have to run the System Reset. Don't have it in front of me, but that's about it.

1- copy Bin file
2- run upgrade function
3- run system reset function

Thanks Ben. I actually figured it out and did it just as I seen your post. It is upgraded so it says. Still says 111 minutes but I understand that changes once I hit record. I'll try that now.......... Just did and still 111 minutes recording time with a 720p setting. Got to get that to 720n. I'll dig back and read what the other guy said. Probably in the camera setting.;

Set the camera in 720/24fps mode, and make sure the frame rate is set to 24fps.

Set the FS-100 into quicktime pN or P2 pN mode. When those things match, you should get 250+ minutes.

I'm having the same problem, about half of my clips fail to import properly. And for some reason the changing the ins and outs does not fix the problem. The only solution is to drag to timeline and add edit or clip some off either end.

Are the FCP people having the same problem?
