fs-100 shipping?

Many thanks MVB, Raylight looks like the solution for the moment. What great news. Does Raylight degrade or alter the footage at all?
Raylight has multiple playback qualities. In the lowest-quality/fastest-playback mode it's low-res, but fast. In the highest quality it references the original MXF data, so it's absolutely 100% original quality. That mode is the slowest, so how you'd normally work is in the middle quality setting if your system is fast enough, or the lowest quality setting if your system isn't fast enough, and edit your program in realtime. When you're ready to export your finished footage, you switch raylight to highest-quality mode before rendering out your final file.

Thanks for that explanation Barry.

sorry my question wasnt very clear....I was wondering what spec computer would run premiere raylight combo well.

I've heard a couple of bad things regarding frame rate and rendertime....is anyone using the system?

Oh, great, I just got an e-mail, that the HVX has been delayed until the end of April, so I'm screwed. So what is the best solution now? Rent two P2 card with a P2 Store? Buy a it? Or go with the laptop streaming? But this does look to complicated to carry around...Where do you get the P2 store with two P2 cards 4 Gig for a good price?

Oh crap, nobody seems to have them in store. So I suppose I have to get a laptop. So, what kind of ports does a PC notebook to have so I can record without dropouts? I need an external Firewire drive, right? And I need something like Canopus Edius Broadcast, right? And what about battery running time?

Here the text of the e-mail:

I'm sorry but you can not pre-order the FS-100. The date of release has
been pushed back until the end of April. I also wanted to inform you
that the FS-100 will only be sold through Panasonic. Focus Enhancements
will not be selling this product.

Has anybody a working PC notebook setup and can give me detailed instructions? A single P2 with 4 Gigabytes would cost me almost the price of a notebook...

Pascal I feel really sorry for you, I know that feeling. You have the camera but nothing to record to. Hopefully there isn't any problem with my P2 cards delivery tomorrow and my P2 Store arrives next week as promised.

I got mine from H Preston www.hpreston.co.uk - they ship around the world apparently. They have cards in and can get in P2 stores to order. They are the most helpful stockists that I've contacted over the past two weeks.

I've gone with 2 8gb cards and a P2 store. The way I look at it is that it's the way the camera is meant to be used. It's tried and tested, it works and for my needs it should suffice - both for filmmaking and event coverage. The Firestore is delayed and I don't like the idea of it streaming from Firewire. I also don't like the idea of not being able to record natively. So the cards/store should last me for the forseeable future.

I have an Athlon 64 X2 4200, Quadro FX 3400, 2GB ram.

Editing Stats:
I can run Raylight in Premiere Pro almost real-time in the full quality mode. When I drop it to Medium mode, it is silky smooth. You can download the demo version of the plugin and try it out for yourself. Make sure you have version 1.04, because it has some very nice speed improvements.

Render stats:
I made a 720/24P sequence in Premiere Pro 2. I put 1 minute worth of Raylight footage in the sequence. It took me roughly 12 minutes to render out the sequence using Quicktime with Avid DV100 codec.

Yes, but the P2 Store and a single 4 Gig P2 card will cost me more than about 5 hours of streaming to a notebook, so I'm not going to invest into that. And then, I can use the notebook for editing, and Edius Broadcast too, but those P 2 cards and the P2 Store will soon be too small. And you can't record for more than 8 Minutes with P2 cards.

You can record 16 minutes of 720pn with 2 4gb cards.

It really depends what your workflow is. If I was purely using the camera for filmmaking I'd have got two 4gb P2 cards and used my laptop for offloading. You just stick your P2 cards in the PCMCIA slots and away you go.

However for my event coverage I wouldn't be able to carry a laptop around. I certainly couldn't stream to it. I require at least 30 minutes of DVCPro50 for my event coverage in one go and two 8gb cards will provide that.

If I didn't get the two 8gb cards + P2 store, I simply couldn't make any money with the camera - so couldn't justify the purchase of it over renting. I know my clients are going to love DVCPro50 images, and that more work will come my way as a result of shooting that over DV to tape. I also know that my workflow will be much faster without having to capture from tapes. So it's a case of speculating to accumalate. Obviously everyone elses situation will be different, but for me the 8gb cards and store were the way to go for both filmmaking (which takes a while before we can sell and make any money) and event coverage (which is fast money).

Why not, is your notebook to slow? I need to capture a 90 Minute concert, so I need a reliable notebook solution.

No, but have you ever tried carrying a laptop around whilst shooting :D

A P2 store will fit in a decent sized pocket and is rugged. My laptop would just get trashed as well.

Why not? I have been carrying a bagback around for years. I'm not going to hold the notebook in my hands...

And how do you check to see if everything's recording okay once it's in your backpack? And what about buffering the video so you don't get jogs and jumps in the stream? The Firestore has an anti-shock buffer.

I just don't think using a laptop when you're moving about is advisable. If you're in a studio environment or you're shooting drama with lock-offs and a long firewire lead it'd work but other than that I'd not do it myself.

Well, I have no choice. I'd rather have some hours of footage with some hiccups as some minutes without.

But how are you going to tell the computer to go into record. When you record to the laptop, you have to set that up in the NLE and then hit the Cature Now Button. Failure to do that will result in no recording. Also you will have to tell the computer to stop. The laptop idea will work but really only if it is on a stable surface.

My suggestion is to rent a P2 store and a couple of additional cards.

Best,

Jan

The P2 store will also not work in a backpack due to the movement and sensors in the P2 store. If you turn off motion detection, then it will work, but in the manual it says doing so will void the warranty....I don't want to void the warranty.

Speaking of warranty?
How long is it? I may want to try to put a larger drive in it after the warranty runs out.

Sure, but besides that I will have to keep changing the cards, dumping to the P2 Store. Then renting will cost me 500$ bucks or so, for two or three days, and then my money is gone...And as you can read below, I will void the warranty. And with Broadcast and a notebook, those two will not be obsolete after a short time, as I will use both anyway. I can still buy a Firestore, without the need to get rid of a P2 Store, that did cost the same, but nobody wants after the Firestore is out...

I will have about 70 Gigs of harddisk, so I just set the NLE into capture, and press the record button on the HVX when I need it.

The P2 store is costing me £600 less than a Firestore Pascal. Though I admit if you add card prices on top of that it's about more expensive with an 8gb card and less expensive with a 4gb.

600 pounds less? Where do you get your Store? Link? I have to pay 2600 Swiss Francs. That's the Firestore price!
