FS-100 Firmware Upgrade

No, if it was manufactured on or after Feb 1st. I'll go ahead and quote Focus for the second time:

"The 3.0 upgrade is available to existing FS-100 owners directly from on the Focus website for $39. All new FS-100 units manufactured after February 1st, 2007 will have version 3.0 loaded."

But hey, Focus is staffed with great folks, give them a call, can't hurt. Again, it's only $39 and your first rental or paying shoot will cover that easy.

You guys have great forum infact it helped me make a choice on what i bought. I didn't come here to flame anyone thanks for the comments. My sales person called me to follow up and he said I should of got it and it is been taken care. Again thanks again for you follow ups. I know 39.95 is not a lot of money but it does suck when you buy something you thought you would get to find out you didn't. The guys a focus do a great job maybe I came on strong in my first post if I did sorry. Again thank you for a great site.

Wait until you buy a $1200 NLE and an $200 upgrade is released a week later. Trust, they won't do you any favors. Focus has great folks, they always have taken care of me.

Already done that, I'm a post production supervisor been doing it for 4 years. It sucks even worse when the buy one for 16,000 then a month later they don't support it:huh:

So Ben or Barry or anyone that knows, why can't you record variable frame rates with the upgrade? if the 3.0 update on the fs100 is removing the redundant frames, making it native footage then couldn't you just set the camera to 720p/24p (non native of course) at 60 fps for example, and then let the firestore go to work and make the footage native, in return giving you your full 60 frames to edit in the 24p environment. Just a thought, maybe I'm over analyzing something.

PS. this thread kicks major butt!

You can, and always have been able to record Variable Frame Rates with the FS-100. The only catch is that you can't do it in the Native modes, yet. That's coming. Focus said if they included it with the 3.0 upgrade, it would have been so much work and beta testing, it would be another six months before we saw anything. So, it's coming in the future. I'm also crossing my fingers for QT clip spanning, too!

If you set your camera to 720p24 and VFR at 60, and set the FS-100 for Native mode, you'll get native 24fps. Deal is, VFR is not actually about stripping out frames, but manipulating the metadata so that the frames conform to the time base you're editing with.

The FCP Frame Rate Converter takes the 720p24 file, which has 60fps actually recorded. And rather than strip out frames to make it native 24fps, re-arranges the frame timing so that all 60fps are used, but spread out. First 24 of those original 60 get assigned as one second of footage. So VFR is not about stripping out frames, it's about re-assigning frames and Time Code.

Not sure if I explained that properly, but, hope you get the idea. VFR is more complex than simply stripping out frames.

BenB; Cookester7, feel free to PM me any FS-100 questions you have.
David S.; In any case, I'll answer what I can. PM me is Ben doesn't cover it.
Thanks guys! I did some reading up on this thing and your in-depth involvement with the product. Although I'm just getting back to this thread, I appreciate you both for sharing your wealth of knowledge on the FS-100. Trust me, it's a good feeling to know that I can find "experts" on this board on just about any subject with regards to filmmaking and the equipment involved. Sometimes I wonder if the folks that frequent this website can actually comprehend and appreciate the depth of knowledge obtained here from so many Moderators and 'qualified' sources. The learning curves are dramatically reduced from the knowledge gained (regardless of your level) and best of all, with just a few key strokes,,,,,IT'S ABSOLUTELY FREE FOR THE ASKING!!! Can't beat that. Thanks again guys:  Cookester7.

I apologise for asking what is probably a seriously stupid question...

I'm new to the fs-100 etc and am learning as fast as possible.

If I'm in PAL land do I need a particular update, or does the fs-100 know it's PAL and so retain its settings for PAL using a universal update?

And do I need to have a particular version installed for the upgrade to 3.0 to work?

Thanks for any help

There are two physically different devices, one for NTSC, one for PAL. The FS-100 you have knows it's PAL. I'd contact Focus with any questions about the update for PAL FS-100s.

Help help! I just installed the new firmware upgrade, and everything went successfully. I then popped the sucker on my HVX and shot about 2 minutes of test footage, and then after turning off the unit and unmounting it, it seems to have frozen. When I turned it back on, it now just sits frozen on the welcome screen. I've done about 3 hard resets and am desperate for a solution. We start production on a feature in three days. Please HVX sages, help me yet again.

EDIT: I just did another "hard reset" and now it says No Disk Detected. Please tell me my lovely little Firestore isn't DOA.

Just got to ask, so im 100% sure...have a shooting in two weeks.

I live in a PAL country.

So if i shoot in 1080i/25p and capture it on v3.0 firestore, is all i have to do to get 1080p to just take the captured files and drag the to a 1080/25p timeline in my editing program? No extra tweakings of any kind?

Is it that easy!?

If yes, then i love this machine!

/Sash
