Frustrated by Crashes

Sorry, but it is always the same with new software versions :-)
Generally you are first to report buggy behaviour.
Plus I just checked your words about 1/3EV increments. All working perfectly in movie mode.

1/3 ev works here to...first thing 3.40d did when i upgraded, was reset all the settings to the factory defaults in the menus. no big deal, just went thru one by one, and set them how i want them. so far so good!

Yeah I did the big reset after installing, still got some gremlins. I'll mess with it more in the next few days.

Went out with the B settings today. When I found a shot that crashed because of high detail I switched from FHD to SH and I was able to record with no problems. For what I need the high detail shots, I can live with the 720 instead of the 1080 I think.

Now I wonder if I should up my settings to the C settings and see if I can record in SH an not get a crash or if I'll have to go down to L or something. I'd really like to get the lesser detailed shots as high quality as possible.

Here's a grab with the B settings in FHD mode.

Man, I was just about to re-hack my camera for no N24p i was getting so frustrated with my cams crashing after 6 secs filming in a Japanese garden... glad someone started this thread... I think I'll just keep what I have (it's worked okay so far- basically 'b' and N24p) and try shooting the high info scenes in 720/60p, see how I like it. Thanks folks!

^^^yes, but correct me if i am wrong n8ture, you were locking down your GH1 on sticks WITHOUT using native 24P and still having problems with static shots...correct?

Correct. I've tried both 24p and non 24p and they crash with high detailed scenes when locked down on my tripod.

I can certainly go shoot the same things I shot today with the B settings and no 24p checked to see if it makes a difference but I don't think it will.

Here's some test footage btw with the C settings trying out my Nikon 105mm macro.

Not much DOF so no crashes at all.

Maybe I just need to set the settings for L near default or something to do these kinds of shots then crank it up for the shallow DOF stuff?

Course, I compressed this probably way too much cause it doesn't look that sharp but the original is pretty sweet!
really nice last shot at 2 minute mark. did you use any filters or anything for that?

All my filters are 4X4 so I need to get a mattebox or something. So that's all vanilla lens stuff. :)

n8ture, what lenses are you using beyond the nikon 105 macro that you are getting crashes with? Have you tried MF wides via adapter?

so IOW, choosing hacked GH1s as low cost alternatives to EX-1s solely for locked down cut to wide shots during 2 hr shoots is pointless...?

good point HD - I would be using only fully manual 35mm lenses

.

That's what i suggested to you early in the thread but no response, it works for me, that's why i shared it with you.

That's some beautiful footage! It made me want to live there, until you showed the yellow flower with all the bugs and then it made me not want to live there. LOL!

You have to really be there soon after the tallgrass wildflowers bloom because they don't last very long before they're not picture perfect anymore.
I go out there quite often to see what's budding and then know I only have about a day before the flowers have been munched on. :)

Homunculus This time of year when we have high dew points we have morning fog fairly often. The nature center where all this was shot sits right next to the Cedar river so it has morning fog more often than the surrounding areas.

rambooc1, yep you were the one that suggested that. Now I'm debating if I should up my settings to the C settings for shots that aren't so detailed and then switch to 720 for the more detailed stuff. I don't know.

HDkilledFilm. , Most of my Nikon glass is on the bigger side since I used it to photograph wildlife. I have a 24-50 I used for wider stuff but most of my stuff is like 80-200f2.8 300's etc. So nothing that's fast and wide.

n8ture, have you explored possiblity of having 2 diff memory cards and loading different firmwares in each one and then changing firmware as needed for whatever shot. have C settings on one and something safer on another and interchange them in the field. not sure if this would work or is practical

Actually I just went out and got three small SDHC cards and I'm going to load different firmware on them and see what happens. :)

It works fine, i have been doing that all along on 128Mb class2 cards.

I have my Stable always fall back on settings on one card and experimental stuff on 3 others. Just make sure you don't forget to swap out to your recording video card like i did, can't get much 1080P on a 128Mb card. It did record a clip though and got card full error not a write error .....haha
