C200: From Canon: XFAVC support in 2018 will be 8 bit

Apologies if you've already seen this but I haven't seen it posted here:

Brent Ramsey from Canon says the XFAVC support coming next year will be 8 bit and not 10 bit. I'm ok with that, as I assumed I'd just use the XFAVC support for replacing use of mp4.

Almost time to go buy some more CFast cards!

[Update: While another Canon employee - one in the UK - has said that 8 bit XFAVC support is coming in February of 2018, I think it's more likely that we'll see something better. Matthew Allard from Newsshooter said that a Canon employee in Japan said "something completely different" regarding XFAVC support. Newshooter seems to have very good connections at the camera vendors, so I'm inclined to think we'll get 10 bit support. That said, I'm buying the camera based on the specs it has at release date, and not counting on some future enhancement.]

do you know if its 422 or 420 8bit? also how many bitrate XFAVC is it? i hope its at least 300 or 400 mbs, fingers crossed...

I'm sure the folks over at MagicLantern would be more than happy to set them straight after the outcry over this ridiculous exclusion. I wasn't interested in the camera for anything other than the 4K raw and focus tracking, but I hope they come to their senses.

ML people don't work on the cinema cameras. Seems like the overall progress on the DSLRs has slowed down too.

Thanks for the info, fhammond. If the new codec makes the files as gradable as the original C300 XF files, including being 422, I'll be happy... seems like it'd be a good compromise between real world usability (not just meeting broadcast specs), and Canon's apparent need to protect the C300-2.

Matt Allard, who is one of the people who runs newsshooter, just commented about 12 hours ago that he was told by Canon Japan that it won't be 8-bit last week. Here's hoping that Japan is right and US is wrong on this one...

Interesting. Maybe they were waiting for Panasonic to show their hand before announcing that it may not be 8 bit?

Conflicting info from 1st party sources. Hmmm...

I wonder if the 1080p XFAVC will be 10-bit and the 4k will be 8-bit.

I saw he posted about that more than once now too. I'd imagine they'd be shooting themselves in the foot not having a 10bit option - even if they made us pay extra for it.

I was just coming here to attach the reply I got from Matthew Allard stating the C200 XFAVC will be 10bit XFAVC.

It had me really wondering how Canon would justify the difference between the C200 and the C300ii if they just rolled out the 10bit codec for the C200. It makes sense if the XFAVC 2K was 10bit and 4K was 8 bit thought, because aside from internal Clog2, the 4444 2k modes and the wider colour gamuts available internally on the C300ii, there's not much more to differentiate those two cameras. Why would anyone buy the C300ii or C700 if the C200 got all the high end features?

Eventually the C300 Mark II will be done - discontinued - probably sooner than expected (just the change of times), but it still has some other features to separate it from the 200.

It's quite possible that, by the time 8/9/10 bit - and it can be any one of them, if you account for the wrappers - rolls around, C300 MKII will be gone from the store shelves and C300 MKIII/ C400/C300 MKIIB will be coming in.

IMO, C300 MKIII will be C200 + C300 MKII, which should be rather easy to manufacture. C400/C500MKII will be the updated C700.

I'm pretty sure the only reason for releasing the update beginning of 2018 to shorten the gap between the C200 XFAVC and the C300 MKIII.

If they released it now it would be at least 9 months until the C300 MKIII is announced, potentially killing MKII sales for too long.

Releasing in January gives them only say 3-4 months until the announcement (?).

The "re-engineering" excuse is total bollocks. The C300 MKII has XFAVC in 2 bit depths at 4 resolutions, 5 bit rates and 2 different colour sampling types and has been out for 2 years. Not to mention the XC-10/15 camera capabilities. Meaning at least 4+ years of development time. You can't tell me they couldn't implement XFAVC in the C200 at launch.

Good news for C200 owners though because once they add 10 bit XF-AVC it will be an awesome camera.

Good news for C300 MKIII buyers too because that will be an awesomer camera.

I am still not ready to accept that it could be 10bit for HD/2K but 8bit only for UHD/4K DCI.

MY EXISTING STANDARD AND BENCHMARK is here the FS7 - able to shoot with 10bit up to UHD 50/60p. If that standard is not achieved why should I even think about to switch?

IMO the FS7 is on a higher level then the C200, it's more C300 level
10bit 4k XFAVC would make the C200 too good, and how many times has our lovely canon done exactly what we want?

Brilliant point

Simple solution. Don't purchase a c200. ;) You've stated your case a few times. lol

By the way, Allard said in his review that he's been getting different answers from Canon on whether the codec will be 8-bit or 10-bit. So who knows what will happen. Here's to hoping it's as robust as they can make it because even though I don't require 10-bit for work, I'd rather have as great a camera as possible.
