For Married people only.

I didn't say that it was the same; I pointed to the 85% / 15% split. I don't doubt at all that the rewards increase along with the stress. But for my part I can be content with my 85% :).

You've got your ratio inverted. It's not even close to 85 percent.

Ha, nicely put, I agree.

I just have no interest whatsoever. But it's all a personal preference, I just find it funny when parents try to convince you on some emotional level because they personally find these little things worthwhile. It doesn't excite me. It would excite me to see my movie on 3,000 screens, or to see my name on the list of Oscar nominees, or something amazing like that. But it wouldn't be ok with me to be woken up in the middle of the night when I'm trying to work on a feature film by a screaming baby, or a kid with nightmares, or anything else like that. Or to know I can't just go on vacation for two weeks because this or that reason. I like to do what I want, when I want, and be accountable only to myself. Freedom is something I value too highly to give it up for any reason, but especially one I don't find worthwhile at all. I see no benefit, personally, just drawbacks.

Aw, you guys are softies. It's hard to watch your kid go to school for first time.

@ Richard - I was so happy when my son started the 1st grade. I had the whole day to run errands, shop or be by myself. Just take time with wifer, even if it's just a walk around the block.

@ Sad - did you say "DEFLATED" because I know inflatable Annie loves Bob... Just saying.

@ Zaza :love4:

Man. This makes me sad...I mean, to each his own and I'm glad you know yourself...but I'd chose hearing my daughter say she loves me over 100 Oscars. A life that's all about self gratification would seem very empty and sad to me. I may not win an oscar, or see one of my movies on 3,000 screens, and neither may you. But I'll have the love of my family even if I die broke and penniless.

You and I are very much alike. It is for similar reasons I don't think highly of marriage.

One other argument for parenthood; it's actually pretty good preparation for being a filmmaker. You have to deal with fragile, childlike egos (actors), get them dressed (wardrobe), feed them and the crew (craft services), learn how to manage your time, deal with constant unforseen inconveniences, interference from grandparents who think they know better (producer notes), and fight an environment bent on corrupting and destroying the purity of your baby.

But there is a finite end to every project. Just have to hold my breath.

Hold it for a project, my lips will get blue.

Hold it for an entire child's life, they'll have to bury me.

one example... sending your kid to school for the first time.... turned out to be quite a sentimental experience... (My oldest just started school last week)[...]

We stayed put this summer for the first time in a long time. Mostly swimming, playing, reading, etc. So we practically booted them out the door on the first day of school. But I do remember when our eldest left for the first time...not so easy.

Look, I'm not saying everyone has to be a parent. But I've had your life. And I've also been a parent. And I like being a parent better. You haven't been a parent, so you really have no idea what you're talking about.

And I expressed no designs against your lifestyle. I merely expressed those for mine.

One could make a similar argument when you say you've "had my life."

I just meant being a single person with no personal attachments...You expressed agreement with JohnLB's views, as well as disdain for the idea of marriage. I don't see how you could cast an informed negative view on something you haven't experienced, and being married is something you need to have experienced personally to understand with any depth. I've experienced being a single guy living the bachelor life so I feel I can compare the two experiences with more insight than someone who hasn't...Of course, being single would be vastly superior to being in a crappy marriage with rotten kids, but that's a whole other ball of wax.

Sums up almost every relationship I've ever witnessed.

Could my perspective be tainted?

Yes. You get out of marriage and parenting what you put into it, so chances are if your marriage and kids are rotten it's at least 50 percent your fault.

And hey! The thread said FOR MARRIED PEOPLE ONLY!...What the hell you doing in here anyway!? :)

I was wondering how long it would take someone to pick up on that.

I doubt I'm the first (or last) single person in here who is not married. Ever since Jason Ramsey said something that was really really funny a few pages back.

:)
