For C100 thinkers...

If this is user error than that's cool. Is there one of these external recorders that makes it simpler than others? I would rather spend more money and get something that works out of the box with minimal work (with FCPX and C100).
Atomos ninja 2

+1 too, but there will be lot's of times when my C100 is sitting on a tripod, so why not have the footage instantly available on a larger, faster SSD, in ProRes, ready to go.

The whole point of the C100 is to have a compact camera so the idea of hooking up an external recorder goes against what it is.

It doesn't matter what it was meant to be as long as what you turn it into works for you. DSLR's and what they've been used for the last few years are a prime example.

I think Atomos should go back to work on making the Ninja compatible with the FS100 so those of us who bought one can trigger record and stop without having to put the camera down or take it off your shoulder. In my opinion they totally missed the boat and have let down thousands of people who bought the original Ninja. I for one don't trust Atomos, they dodge any responsibility for their failure to provide owners with what would seem to anyone as a basic need ...Record and Stop...controlled by the operator when shooting with the camera.
Perhaps a class action is in order... I say C100 owners go elsewhere for your outboard recording needs! Don't trust them!

From what I have read, this is Sonys problem, not Atomos (I could be wrong though, I don't own an FS100). The FS100 LANC control is different to other Sony cameras, and not compatible with the Ninja. Apparently it works over HDMI with latest firmware and a Ninja 2. If Sony thought it was worthwhile to get working with the Ninja 1 then they could have done that, I'm sure. You shouldn't discourage people from these products because the C100 + Ninja 2 combo looks pretty good, and they are two completely different products compared to a FS100 + Ninja 1 combo.

To me the advantage of the C100 or C300 is the small size and portability. Take away that and they offer nothing compared to other cameras. Sure you can put a recorder, monitor, rig, shotgun microphones and what not. But by then the the camera isn't compact anymore. I have my F3 rigged with a Shuttle 2 and in reality if I were to rig a C100 with the same stuff the small size would be no more and what advantage would I have compared to the much better F3 then?

Huge difference, as suspected the AVCHD codec is very brittle compared to the 422, this also confirms for me that this unit needs to be paired with an external recorder for best results.. time too look elsewhere =(
Aha. This video makes it clear there's a big difference between the C100 AVCHD and the NINJA 2 PRORES. Big difference. Going to put in my order now.

Yes, same with nanoFlash with the FS100 though. (Something weird with the Sony proprietary time code, maybe.) A year of lip service followed by nothing.

I'm not sure if Atomos ever promised to implement HDMI timecode trigger like Convergent Design did with their perpetually postponed firmware update. Atomos states clearly that:

FS100 and the HDMI embedded timecodeThe FS100 is a somewhat unique product in that Sony has developed their own way to send timecode through an HDMI connection. Unfortunately, this is not part of the HDMI standard, and since we adhere to that standard, we do not support the Sony HDMI timecode.

I wish Convergent Design would also just be forthcoming like this.

I don't want to hijack the thread anymore but Atomos made promises to fix this problem, talked about retro fitting existing Ninja units and generally filled time for months only to do nothing for the existing Ninjas. They never even offered a work around or add on, just bs about how they were working on it. It is not a Sony problem if you build a box that is supposed to work on Sony and Canon cameras and then it only sort of works. I also feel that I should express my opinion and experience with a company and their product when the topic of the thread concerns promises made by that company to owners of another new camera.

getting low on bandwidth out in the boonies... can't go over or AT&T will burn me for a 100 bucks... instead of the normal $9.95 fee... takes 3 months to fix it.. so I didn't watch it... so not sure if it fixes the problems for the old ones or just new ones or does nothing at all...

Brian,

Just out of curiosity... Do any 3rd party recorders work properly with the FS100 HDMI time-code signaling ?

I would think that if nobody has this issue solved, then maybe Sony's proprietary HDMI signaling really is the problem.

Something still seems wrong with the video though. Something is off in the way the footage look. If something is uprezzed 400% it should get softer, not keep the jaggies like the AVCHD does. If you use the proper uprez filter (in Compressor for instance) it could handle it far better then that.

No doubt there's a difference, but I'm not sure the difference is as drastic as the video shows...hmm.

Try the pix220
http://www.sounddevices.com/products/pix220i/key-features/

The PIX 220i offers HDMI input and simultaneous HDMI output.
HDMI timecode can be read from Sony FS100, and other Sony NX cams.

...But does the Sound Devices PIX 220i implement stop/start control by monitoring the Sony FS100 HDMI signal ? ( this seems to be the area where the Ninja 2 has the problem )
