Footage with 2.0 firmware upgrade (cinematone 1 gamma)

Spny Canada and USA are not even always in the known, depending to who you ask. I often got bad infos comming directly from Sony.

This is the confirmation from Sony on Twitter

@SonyProUSA Hi Sony, could you please confirm that there was no changes to the gammas in FS100 update please?

@WeAreNIRV That is correct, no changes.

Dealer-Shmealer I see what I see, and what I see is different.

Even if he said the Information is from Sony, given that´s true - who knows if the Sony person he talked to is in the know?
Most Sony personal isn't even near to understand what we are talking about.
Most of them just repeat the official statements.

I wasn't saying YOU were wrong, I'm sure they DID tell you that. I just went back to
the other thread, and guess what? It was someone with Sony Canada who also said the
firmware updates were different depending on if it was the UK version or the US/Canada
version. Just saying......

For the record there were undocumented changes.

Before the patch my EVF would not display updated histogram
information unless the LCD was open. Now I can close the LCD
completely and have my histogram updated via HDMI output.

This was not possible before as the histogram would just freeze
and never update with the LCD closed.

However this is small and not mentioned perhaps they didn't mention
other changes...it's silly not to do so. Especially when some could be
huge perks...

I would like to know why the picture styles look completely different now than before. I uploaded the UK firmware on my fs100. If there are differences, I wonder what they would be. However, as I've been reading, they are the same. I'm mind boggled.

I still haven't updated mine, and probably won't until next week.

If I end up having the time, I can do before/after tests as well. Any picture profile requests?

Hi guys

I just did a test comparing different picture profiles and gamma curves from firmware V1 with the same settings on firmware V2 under exact same conditions. I can confirm that I cannot see any differences between the handling of picture profiles between firmware V1 and firmware V2. Cinegamma1 and Color Depth gives the same result after updating to V2, for example.

If you like I can try to upload the footage.

Best regards.

Ha. the whole pixel peeping community fell for a collective hallucination?
LOL, that would be hilarious.

I would really love to see some grabs from that footage.
If it´s true, I retire :)

While waiting for my retirement, Andy Shipsides from AbelCine thought the new Firmware needs new Picture Profiles.
Go figure

You can download them here: http://blog.abelcine.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/FS100.zip

After you uncompress the file, drag the “Private” folder to the root directory of an SDHC card or Memory Stick. In the “Others” menu of the camera, you can load all of the Picture Profiles via the “Camera Profile” option. This will overwrite any menu and assignable button settings you have!

Hi, everyone - I did a quick shoot yesterday with a profile that used cinematone 1. This is the same profile I have been using with 1.0 and it definitely looks different than the old cinematone 1. A little less flat. But I like it. I also included some shots in the beginning shots that aren't great... but they have some major blown windows. The only light source was coming from the windows behind the engineer. Super quick edit, so be gentle about this vid's artistic value!

Strapping Profile:

Black Level: +10
Gamma: Cinematone1
Black Gamme: High, +7
Knee: 100%, -1
Color Mode: Cinematone2, Level 8
Color Level: -2
Color Phase: -1
Color Depth: R -2, G +3, B +4, C +7 M +2, Y +7
WB shift: LB -1, MG/GR: -2, R -2, B 0
Detail: -2

Thanks so much for this profile. I tried a total of four today, and of the four, this one looks REALLY freakin' good, even when I let the highlights go.

I modified it a bit, felt that pushing the black levels up too high really would be a bad thing and I'm gonna go a little further down. Also I think the detail needs to come down along with that, but other than that I think it's really nice, man. Good work.

+1 ^ I was initially a little not so impressed with the blacks up so high. (the scene at 0:11 looks a little washed out to me) but scenes like at 1:00 look great. (awesome color rendition etc, although the blacks are still a little too high for me)
Maybe thats my fondness of the 5D crushed black look,.... I don't know???

It's pretty interesting... I think the "grade everything" explosion really sort of took everyone a step backward, but I too fell into it and now I'm trying to figure out if I like the muted look or the saturated and slightly crushed look. Either way, it's kinda fun.

I'm experimenting with Kyle's modified settings out to nanoFlash, recording the 220Mb/s setting because I wanted to see how far I could actually push the image down in camera (underexpose) and bring it up in post, and how working like that compared to using the internal AVCHD (which like everyone says is already REALLY freakin' good.)

Seems like the FS100 is clean enough at low ISOs to where you could do this and not suffer a major penalty, not sure though:

And for highlights, I let some slightly go on skin to see how it would turn out:

So far I'm pretty pleased. Still scrubbing footage, but the noise is not offensive working at extremes like this, and the color's great.

(If it's not yet realized, I am a newb to FS100 still xD)

Andy on Twitter:

Look for a review of the new FS100 on our @abelcine blog, and new scene files.

and

Making new files for the FS100s new firmware.

Haven t compared them though.
