Footage with 2.0 firmware upgrade (cinematone 1 gamma)

Hi, everyone - I did a quick shoot yesterday with a profile that used cinematone 1. This is the same profile I have been using with 1.0 and it definitely looks different than the old cinematone 1. A little less flat. But I like it. I also included some shots in the beginning shots that aren't great... but they have some major blown windows. The only light source was coming from the windows behind the engineer. Super quick edit, so be gentle about this vid's artistic value!

Strapping Profile:

Black Level: +10
Gamma: Cinematone1
Black Gamme: High, +7
Knee: 100%, -1
Color Mode: Cinematone2, Level 8
Color Level: -2
Color Phase: -1
Color Depth: R -2, G +3, B +4, C +7 M +2, Y +7
WB shift: LB -1, MG/GR: -2, R -2, B 0
Detail: -2

was this graded or straight out of camera?

If it's straight out of camera, some of the best I've seen....
Thanks so much, Michael! It was straight out of the camera. I think there is something better working with the camera, post update. Slightly sharper? Better curve? Would love to hear you guys 2.0 experiences.

kyle-

very nice balance of colors and not a trace of blown out reds.

please take a bow.

(and thank you for sharing)

be well.

That is by far the best footage I've seen out of this camera without grading or correction...
Anyone want to weigh in on the possibility that the red channel might have undergone
some changes? Are we reading to far into the update and just want more?

It's hard to agree with that second question since this is by far the best
footage I've seen get spit out of this camera to date without correction.

Anyway, will someone please test this red channel situation as well as the
possible new highlight handling.

they definitely messed with the gammas, I have never seen a profile where I would confidently hand out of camera footage to a client before. Now I finally have a profile I can use when I shoot events or run & gun type projects o.O

Giving this profile a good go on a project this week. The footage looks amazing, just got the new Firmware, very keen to try it out!! :D

Couldn't help but have a little go, this is with Kyle's PP.

Last shot is 12,800 ISO.

Thanks so much, everyone! This firmware is odd, but I think we're going to like what it does to the picture profiles. The profile I shot that with is the same I normally shoot with... but the outcome is now just less flat and more pleasing. Think I'll bump up the black level to +15 next time and see what that looks like.

You are killing your dynamic range by raising the black level and you'll posterise the image if you add contrast in post. It's better to make sure you use the full dynamic range of the camera then lift the blacks in post if you want the washed out look.

If you're using the Cinegamma2 curve and raising the black level you'll obliterate detail that you might want later.

I need to post an example to show the dangers of increasing the black levels.

Cool! Good to know. You think the black level in that video example looks okay? I usually go in at +8 with cinegamma/tone 1, but the new values are less flat. So I bumped it to +10.

Both of these plots are from the same scene but with two different profile setups.

You can clearly see the affect on the first image where the mid tones have been pulled down by the Cinegamma2 curve and at the bottom the black have been squeezed into nothing by the raised black level. See how much more structure there is in the second plot. While it is under exposed and not using the full DR of the camera there is so much more to data.

If you were to add contrast to the first image, as it's very washed out, you'd be left with very blocky noisy areas in the black tones. You may want this look and that's completely fine but should the director change their mind about the look of the piece and want a punchy or push it further than anticipated that detail that has been lost could come back to bite you.

Would this profile perhaps benefit from a slightly lower black level (4-7 range)? I don't have the new firmware yet to test (AC cable sitting at my girlfriends place in orange county).

Watching it a bit more it gives off a little of a neutral/flat'ish feel and I think that might be because the black level is on the higher end

Im going to shoot some stuff today with the black level at 0 I think, maybe lower. I would really like Frank to weigh in on this and why he has +15 in G-Log.

I can't wait to try this new firware (Monday). The red fabric in the second shot looks real, not like some irradiated garment that had been layng around Fukishima for six months.

I too am rethinking selling my FS100. It will be interesting to see how the IQ, range and espeically detail now stack up against the FS700 (although the NDs, handgrip, and handle improvements alone almost justify the swap).

That's all un-corrected as well, and at 50p. I shot some stuff at 25p outside with the Black Level at 0, might just play with the whites and blacks with it and see what I can get. These changes with the firmware are also making me think that other profiles I've used have now been improved.
