Footage loses quality when imported??

I was importing footage (MOV file) into Vegas after looking at it on Quicktime. However, after importing it, the footage loses qulaity when watching the footage on the playback window on Vegas. Does this improve back to it's original quality when I render it or is there anyway to fix this??

Well, without a description of what was changed in the image ("loses quality" can mean quite a few things) . . . is the preview quality set to "draft" or "preview" instead of "good" or "best"? Is the image set to stretch out to the window size so that it's being displayed at larger than its resolution?

Hi David,
Thanks for the reply. Being new to Vegas, I wasn't even fully aware that I could adjust the preview settings that might be on "draft" instead of "best". I haven't cropped or out-scaled the resolution of the footage in any way to reduce it's quality. Basically, when I import the footage onto Vegas, the footage looks very jagged in some parts that could best be described as digitalized or pixelated around the edges. I am not at Vegas now, but when I get a chance, I'll see if it is as something as simple as adjusting the preview quality.

Yes, that is it, it must be previewing at Preview quality. This feature is available in Vegas as it allows you to natively edit all kinds of media without the need for transcoding on weak and/or old systems.

The renders are at "Best (Full)" quality, so you don't need to worry. If you have a powerful system, you can try setting to "Good" or "Best". If your system can't keep up and realtime playback isn't possible, Vegas automatically drops back to the highest possible realtime setting.

Vegas 10 renders at Best by default if that's in the project settings, but in earlier versions, most render templates are set at Good at default. "(Full)" and the other terms in parentheses only refers to the display resolution in the preview window.

I noticed something similar last night when putting a file from my GH2 into Vegas. Viewing straight from the cam looked crisp and natural, but in Vegas, even with the project settings matching the file type, preview and render set to Best, etc, etc, the footage in the preview window looked dulled and faded. There was no pixelation or anything which looked dramatically worse, but the crispness of the image was gone...any thoughts?

Could be the difference in calibration between your computer monitor and whatever you were watching it on from the camera.

might be studio RGB vs. computer RGB

Does it look "normal" if you temporarily apply studio RGB to computer RGB preset ?

Sorry for not being more clear, but it is the same monitor. The one which appears more crisp is being viewed in a playback device supplied with an older Sony HD camcorder (PMB, which I forget what that stands for...) while the other is, as stated, Vegas 10.

I'll check this and get back to you.

Thanks for the advice...
