Looks great on TV, sucks on my MacPro

So I've got an oldschool DVX and I've been shooting a lot of underwater footage lately. When I playback my footage on a TV via the RCA out it looks amazing. When I capture my footage it looks really grainy and difficult to color correct due to the excessive amount of grain(lack of latitude).

I'm shooting in 24p mode, not advanced, and capturing in FCP @ DV NTSC 29.97. What am I doing wrong?

Thanks!

make sure the zoom level of the canvas window is at 100% or less. The video in the canvas is a proxy file, so if it is zoomed in anymore than 100 it looks like crap. can be tough if you want to get a close up of something but that's just what it is.

don't even attempt to color correct unless you're viewing your material on a broadcast monitor... the canvas window in FCP and the display inside Color are nowhere near accurate. they are just a proxy.

I always work @ 1:1 so I don't that that scaling within the canvas window is the problem. The issue is the image looks great out of the camera but once captured it's very grainy even when brought into color.

I'm not looking for advice on what monitor to use for color grading, I'm looking for help with the issue stated above.

Has anyone had this issue or have any suggestions? Answers pertaining only to this problem are appreciated.

if it looks great on tv then what is the problem? the issue you are having i think is that you are dealing with dv footage. on a computer at 100% it always looks a little grainy and washy. a crt tv smoothes it out and the 2.2 tv gamma bumps the contrast making for a nicer image. try zooming your canvas window out to 50% and see if that looks better. if not, maybe your footage is bad. the dvx is pretty clean unless you shot with gain on or underexposed.

I did answer your question... again:

What you see in the FCP Canvas and inside Color are proxies and cannot be trusted to judge quality. It is not a problem with your footage. It is not a problem with your monitor. There is nothing you can do about this. It is not supposed to look accurate.
