DVC Rack

Can it "flip" and "flop" the image for use with a 35mm adapter?

Can it be used with mac using some kind of PC simulation soft?

Does it support HVX HD straight to laptop recording?

An Intel based Mac with a full standard install of WinXP is a full fledged WinXP machine and is no different than any other.

Any software running on this configuration runs natively an is NOT being emulated.

Why can't you just install OSX on any Intel computer then?

Simple.

Apple doesn't want you too.

They want to have their software tied to their hardware so that their revenues are protected as much as possible.

In order to install a straight version OSX on Intel hardware the install program checks for an Infineon Technologies AG TPM (Trusted Platform Module).

If it finds the expected module, good to go.

If not, it will not install.

Hope this helps.

Is there any difference between macbook and mackbook pro for using DVC rack? And HVX in HD? Has there HD version come out yet?

Thank you for the info!

In general there will be some differences because of screen size, ports (Firewire 400/800),...

Definitely not pawning you off or anything, but it might be in your best interest to search this forum and Google so you can see the general differences between MacBook and MacBook Pro as well as specific differences between models.

I personally am all about open standards and prefer a "P.C."

I do own a couple of Macs and I love their new campaign.

But, P.C.s are still by far the most versatile platforms.

Others will undoubtedly have different opinions on the Mac VS. PC philosophy but for what it's worth that's my 2 pence.

What was this talk about it working on the new pentium macbooks?

Oh, it works great on those. I thought you were asking about using some PC-emulation software like VirtualPC on a G4 or G5. That won't work.

But if you're running an Intel Mac, and you use their BootCamp feature to dual-boot between OSX and WinXP, then yes DVC Rack works excellently in the WinXP partition.

In fact, that's why I sold my G5. I'm going to replace it with a MacBook Pro when I get back from NZ, and use the dual-boot capabilities to run DVC Rack/EDIUS on the XP side, and FCP on the OSX side.

Would it be realistic to use the computer with DVCRack to set the marks on a Follow focus when using the HVX in a combination with a 35 mm adapter? Than use a lower quality sd monitor for framing. Maybe the focus puller could have the computer hanging in front of him with some kind of support strap, and use it as a ref. monitor for him as well. Also i could record straight to the computer. This could technically let me get away with not buying P2 and not having have to shell out 1700 for an HD monitor? Am i only day dreaming?

Hanging a laptop from one's chest seems a little extreme to me... I guess you could do it, but I don't know that I'd want to.

DVC Rack can serve as a replacement for a monitor for focus purposes. But, it's not done yet, so final determinations about things like that will be made once we see the final product. Focus pulling is easier by using the distance marks in the viewfinder or LCD; you'd use the monitor to determine your focus point but when actually shooting it'd be easier to rely on the marks rather than judging whether you've gotten focus accurately by looking at a monitor. Although with DVC Rack you could potentially magnify the screen a lot (sort of like "focus assist" on an external monitor). I just would have to make sure that it's full-speed realtime output before declaring that that would be a practical workflow.

Well i mean as the focus puller is always next to the camera anyways, it would probably be the nicest to have the computer on him, like this you wold not have to be hooked in to a stationary computer and the whole portability issue would be solved, making recording to the computer as convenient as to P2. I am talking about for handheld or traveling camera.

Hi,
Any thoughts on using the 21" Gateway monitor in the field? Claims to be Hi Def With a 1680 x 1050 pixel display. Would be sweet it it could work. I'm not a techie, so I don't know how to interpret the specs. Any thoughts?

Thanks,
Bird

What is the point of measurement for judging distance? Is there a mark equivalent to the "film plane", or does Panasonic consider the measurement from the front of the glass?

I too am curious about this? What is the HVX's equivalent to the film plane?

See post #11 in this thread. Barry says to use the front of the lens for the HVX.

more info on monitors for focusing please

more info on monitors for focusing please

okay,
i've been reading up on moving to the HVX and i know that one thing i want to own, not rent, is a small production monitor that i can attach to the camera or near the camera and use for focusing. i don't feel that the panasonic 17 inch would fit into my run and gun production workflow, though someday i'd like to get that too. DVC rack is not an option because of the tether. in barry's focusing sticky, many people make mention of the marshall V-R70P-HDA, which only has a resolution of 800x480. Barry also mentions that the focusing capability of the marshall is about the same as EVF with focus assist + DTL on the HVX LCD especially since you can't use EVF and focus assist on the marshall. really? are there any other options? any announcements in the wind for a portable 7-9" HiDef monitor that won't cost me four grand? i'll likely be shooting 720p for the most part. would the marshall be any use for 1080?
i guess i'm leaning toward the marshall with the nebtek mod for panasonic batteries, but if it's not gonna help me that much then what's the point? anyone out there do a lot of run and gun HD shoots where you rarely have time to set focus markers? what are you using? your superior depth perception to judge distance on the fly?

also, varizoom has what looks like a comparable monitor to the marshall.

anyone heard anything on that?
thanks.

Unfortunately the reference mark is not always the front of the lens. Depending on the focal lenght it is up to 7cm behind the front element. This makes accurate focussing with the distance marking impossible. For critical scenes I use a HD monitor on the set to pull focus.

Infinite focus?

Infinite focus?

Hi everyone i have been lurking in here for a while and i finally bought a hvx. The info i got here on focusing was invaluable. Theyre is still one thing i am experiancing problems with. How about a landscape shot were you want the whole thing to be in focus? I tried using the evf dtl and also setting the focus to infitinity by pushing the button down....the dtl seems to show positive information but the results are less then satisfying with a 1 out of 4 rate of success. Most of the shots i get are out of focus.
Im new with this cam so maybe im missing something obvious....

Don't let your iris go smaller than f/8, and if you want to be really certain about focus, don't let it go smaller than about f/6.8. Use a haze filter to cut through that haze, and turn your detail level up to around +3. I also think that the lens is a tiny bit soft at absolute full wide, so I'd say zoom in to about 5.5mm or so, maybe you'll have better results. And shoot in 1080 mode rather than 720 mode.

Thanks a lot barry, i'm gonna makes some tests tommorow. I really hope im gonna get the hang of it without having to resort to an external monitor.
