Shot outside for about 10 minutes trying this lens whacking technique I was told about. Did a quick little edit and here's the product -

really wanted to see that dog feasting on a corpse (given the shooting, editing, and music - NOT just because I'm demented). nice work. what lens did you use?

Nice! I also did some lens whacking while I was bored at work. Though used the Sony nex-5n with a canon mount lens.

I've done this with a holga lens - chopped the lens mount from a body, added the holga wide adapter and put it on a rail mount with a metal coil spring, so it will "come back" to straight but can be manipulated. Cool as hell.

Great work, yeah I'd be really scared to do this also. Mainly because I'm paranoid about getting any dust inside.

Meh. I mean, yeah be careful, but mirrorless cameras like the Nex7 and GH2 have the sensor exposed everytime you swap lenses (obviously, since there is no mirror at all to block it). Just don't do it in the middle of a sandstorm.

Not going to lie, I have no idea what whacking is haha yet it is super creepy. Was the dog eating grass haha? Good work Myke.
Lens whacking is pretty much holding your lens (unattached) from your camera while filming. It causes natural light leaks that you cant really predict and causes a sort of barrel distorted look with some lenses. Just kind of a fun thing I wanted to try. and yes haha, the dog was eating grass. For whatever reason, they love it lol.

thats crazy! is all of that red in there natural?

Yep, didn't mess with the shots at all. Not sure why that went so orange, I was shooting on a mildly overcast day - looks very much like film burn or the tail-end of a reel that's been exposed to light. Love it. Used it in a music video and the artist kept re-rolling that shot of the girl, really got to him.

And I hear you about your sensor being unprotected, but whatever. I wouldn't do it on a windy beach, and if I was doing a really long shoot I'm sure I could find a way to get a skylight filter over the lens mount.

I've found most good gear is tougher than you think (just avoid those chinese c-stands, ack), and the sensor itself is protected - there's some sort of glass filtering over camera sensors, that's why you can clean 'em.

Thats awesome. I love the fact that random colors come in. Its not something I would/could do all the time but for trying out something different its really interesting to see what happens. Your footage really does look like the tail-end of a burn which is insane. Do you have a vimeo account or anything where I could check out more of your videos?

That was pretty cool. The whole time I was nervous and I didn't know why lol

lol same here, but may be it's because it's my 3rd cup of coffee. The effect is very impressive, you're shooting pretty positive objects (dogs) and have nicely saturated colors and it STILL creeps the hell outta me.

Have to look into this whacking thing, we should try for the upcoming project.
