First Technicolor+LUT grading

So i Dped this shoot yesterday with the Cinestyle profile and did a quick grading with the lut and Colorista. Literally 5 mins and grabbed a random roof shot...so i'll spend some more time fooling around (cuz i wont be editing it). I'm liking cinestyle. Not so sure about the whole LUT thing as yet...

"konshens" worked for me....lowercase K.

Looks pretty good to me. I'm trying to learn more about grading....What is LUT?

sorry bout the the password confusion..yes lower case.

As regards to whats LUT....i myself am trying to learn whats the purpose if i can replicate it with a simple curve.

that tells about LUT

the guys here discuss it in length in this thread

Technicolor release A LUT file that you can uplaod into ur edit suite via LUT buddy or any other LUT reading program(free to download from Redgiant) .Its basically is an S curve than u apply to ur cinestyle footage. then you begin to grade from there. I find it a bit 2 aggressive though...2 contrasty. But i'm not a good person to ask about it since i barely know about it. I was just trying it on for size :)

I see. Is it a filter or plugin? Stand-alone program?

Yes, Technicolor pretty much says on their description of the picture style that they supply a color curve in the form of a LUT file in order to bring back the recommended levels of color in post.
Problem is, this is only useful for applications that support LUT files. For everyone else, you can eyeball it and just create a similar curve (or even adjust it slightly to better suit your footage- remember the LUT is only a recommendation, does not need to be used implicitly).

There's already a thread discussing this very thing here:
http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?248673-Technicolor-CinemaStyle-Best-Practices/page4
Some of the folks in that thread have even recreated the approximate curve as an ACV file for Adobe products.

Meanwhile, that's some really nice example footage.
Moving to the 7D footage section.

A LUT is a Look Up Table, it's a conversion table. You give it an entry value from 0 to 255 and it outputs a value.
So yes it definitely is like a curve.

You can read more here and also why not using this LUT :

My opinion is that with a curve you can change it easily. It's much harder to change the transfert function of a LUT.
I made an Adobe Curve File for the Curves effect in After Effects and Photoshop (I assume it is also in Premiere Pro).
It's based on the raw values of the LUT provided by Technicolor, find it here :
http://www.filesonic.com/file/972560674/CineStyle_lut.acv

I explained what I did to create this curve here :
http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthrea...st-Practices&p=2334385&highlight=#post2334385
I think it's better to start from this curve or your own one, you have more control on it.
NormanBates also made an in-depth test and a curve on his website, it's in the above link .

Good footage !

Edit : Haha, you guys were both faster than me !

Nice jambredz!

Here's my take on the LUT thing. It's nothing more than a series of numbers that defines an S shaped color curve. By giving us the LUT, Technicolor was steering us toward the CONCEPT of how to get back the magic. When we all first saw this new style we automatically got the idea we needed to apply the LUT perfectly to get everything out of this picture style. It's not the case and you will rarely ever actually use that exact LUT curve for any of your final output.

My suggestion is to forget the idea that you need to apply that curve perfectly. It's the concept of the S shape not the exactness of the curve that is important. For instance the back lit shots here will require a radically different curve than a shot on a dull, rainy, overcast day. The end color curve that gets the "look" YOU want for a certain condition will always be an S shape of sorts with the Technicolor CineStyle, but almost certainly never the exact same as the LUT curve. Remember it's just a color curve. Not some sort of processing or conversion of your footage.

Cheers,
PEte

thanks fellaz :)

yup thats my thinking also Pete.

@JMP...the lighting here was the sun in the back and 2 reflectors on combo stands (you see it in his glasses)
