First small production

Hey people,

picked up my 100b not too long ago and got a gig shooting a promo video for a club.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jwi92_YdbM4

Still messing with the settings of the camera in regards to colour and it certainly wasn't an easy first shoot as it was all low-light, uncontrollable conditions. The manager requested "girls kissing" as well as the use of the 50cent song. Edited in Vegas minor touchups on brightness and contrast and few colour corrections to some clips, mostly trying to sync interestingly to the music.

Let me know what you think, this is my first clip posted to these forums :)

thanks for looking.

any impressions/advice? Like i said its my first project with this camera so feel free to rip it apart, i'd like to hear some peoples opinions. Constructive criticism if you please.

eh, it's not the kinda thing to "show off" your DP skills. As a promo I guess it works (I dont like clubs). If the manager is the kinda guy who asked for girls kissing, I would imagine he's be pretty happy with this.

I'd say you did a good job. How did the manager like it?

That sucked on so many levels

Jesus dude, hold the camera straight, get more than 123908 medium shots

dumb..

ok, i appreciate the constructive criticism... thanks?

there are much nicer ways of wording those comments. It needs work, i'm not getting paid for it its for practice so don't blame me for trying but i don't need that kind of negativety.

If it sucks that bad please link me some examples of different techniques so i can try that next time. I want to learn.

i could be wrong, but i think fox was being silly. It's really hard to tel anymore on this board lol

u didn't get paid? well as I said, although this isn't going to win cinematography awards, if you wanted to show just how bangin' the club is, it's good. The guy owes you free drinks at least or something :)

ah... well i haven't spent time on this board nearly long enough to know when people are being sarcastic, if they are. Anyways its a gateway to other jobs, if the guy likes it (im giving it to him this weekend) then hes gonna refer me to other clubs who when they see the finished product will want one of their own.

Im getting a small fee to cover expenses (ie: tapes, travel etc)

Anyways, if you people have any resources you'd suggest i read or watch i'd love to hear about it. My photography skills are just much more polished than my video work.

for starters, do you have Barry's book? It's going to really help understand everything about how your camera works (all the settings, 24p vs 24pA, tips and tricks) and comes with a nifty dvd. Must have if you don't already :)

i dont as i live in Japan its harder to find places that ship things here. I've heard it mentioned all over the place on this site but haven't really gone into the thick of the details, is it able to be shipped here? if you don't know but can point me in the right direction that would be great.

I thought it was pretty good considering. Yeah more close ups. But this really made me wanna go to this club, so you got the job done. Keep at it you'll be there in no time. Don't listen to the negativity. Learn from the "Constructive Criticism"

I would say..lose the 50 cent song as that is 3 years old already... Also I know it's a club but it is very dark... besides that - cute girls kissing is always a good thing. :)

they say to be an expert at something you have to do it for roughly 10,000 hrs. the best way to get good at anything is to do it.
watch what looks good on TV, I like when i try a camera style or movement that I've seen on TV, and then people can recognize it from whatever show it's taken from.

ya... 3 years old is practically new for Japan. Their english language music tastes are *cough* just a wee bit behind the times.

They definitly still play this song in the club and the manager requested it but i agree that its oooooooold.

I tried to brighten it up a little with Vegas but i didn't wanna go to much, any suggestions on techniques for brightening a scene in Post?

you dont really want to, its more a matter of lighting at the location. Obviously dont have a lot of control, but for starters an on board light is normal for this kind of work. If the club has any light/lazer show stuff get some wide shots of that over the crowd.

i have considered an onboard light as something that would help but didn't really know where to start looking for one. I imagine B&H has a decent selection but off-hand any tips for a resonable start out one?

thanks for all the help btw, its very much appreciated i'm looking into ordering a copy of the DVX book now.

dont know much about on board lights :(

I dont remember the name but there was an onboard light that was a bank of LEDs, I believe you could adjust how many were on at once and even change the color temperature, and it was a nice soft light. it probably wasn't the cheapest light, but it would be the only one you'd need for a while.

Anyone know what I'm talking about?

:D

All those girls...

Just kidding, your first shooting is quite okay. Considering it's in a club, I wouldn't expect a lot of still moments and good lighting. The shots were still decent.
