First shoot with HVX?

I didn't think the grab was that bad.

Sure it's got deep depth of field... but that's only to be expected because the camera has 1/3in CCDs!

Sure the detail setting is a little high... but it is the camera's first outing - who know how much time he had to experiment with it's settings!

Sure the grab uses non-square pixels... but that allows us to see the it pixel for pixel with no interpolation.

Calm down... it's not a Thompson Viper!

(heh! heh!)

[end mock indignity]

I can see it now. That will be the stock excuse from now on.

"it's not a viper cam, what do you expect" :)

(just kidding, eh!)

Cheers,
Chris

The grab doesn't look that great, but hey this is just the first grab. We have to be cool.
We will get loads of good grabs. Don't forget that the DP didn't have any experience with the camera. This was his first time. And just like the DVX, we didn't get really good looking footage from the camera straight away, did we?

Now, what I am really wonder with is the fact that up till this moment, they have only spoken about 1080i and 720p. What happened to the 1080p mode? Are the cameras coming out in December going to have 1080p on them?
It's a bit strange, because the guy shot at 720p. I would expect him to shoot 1080p.

Well, I'll just wonder and wait.

All the best

Fidel.

knockout, nice BALLS for the board, as you can see they WHACK me all over..

I would take a WILD guess and say you have worked with film scans?

I would guess he shot 720P for the same reasons a lot of people will: You get way more footage onto a P2 card, its faster to render and there's not much of a distribution channel for 1080P video. Also, if you want to do over/under cranking then you won't have to rez that footage up to 1080 later.

This was probably a case of matching the resolution to the project.

I agree it's not the best shot, but it's only the first (keyed at that) and does not make a good comparison to the real stream tif file from the link above.

Apples and Oranges... literally :) haha

Especially a frame grab thats not really all from one shot... Yep its keyed... but if you read the article - it is supposed to have that "Sin City" feel to it.... ie forced reality/fakeness... Thats how I understand it...

It's one "composited" frame peeps....

Meh anyways...

Obin- I had not meant for my comments to be taken as an affront, however having gone back and re-read what I wrote I can see that’s exactly what it was. My reference to Andromeda was irresponsible and completely uncalled for. Please accept my apology.

There is a good chance I miss-identified something else (in my mind) as having been early work with Andromeda that I remembered as having been less than satisfactory – definitely my bad. I looked at both grabs you posted and my impression, in a word, “stunning.” The fruit bowl is one smoking good shot!

I got your point re: the posted HVX-200 green screen grab and you are absolutely correct. I am certain we may agree that the potential popularity/success of the new P2 camera is not going to center on this singular example.

Well, just as it has been discussed before, it all depends on your intended output. If you want SD, then go DVCPro-50, If you want HDTV, then go 720p, if you want film out, then shoot mainly at 1080p, and at 720p if you want to do over/under cranking.

But I believe that one of the big extras of this camera is the ability to shoot at 1080p. Its big brother, the varicam, doesn't support it. The only camera that supports that is, if I am not mistaken, the Sony HDCAM. So, I guess we would like to see some 1080p footage.

We can't really generalise and say that everyone wants to shoot 720p because of all the things you have said. I am sure that there are loads who want to shoot in 1080p, and besides, as far as I can remember, I think it was Barry who said that, the majority of HD motion pictures are shot with the CineAlta, because the Varicam does not do 1080p.

As for distribution you are talking about your particular case, because I don't think everyone wants to shoot HD stuff for TV.

Now, with regards to under/over crank, how often do you use it? I haven't seen a movie that uses it in every single shot. You can count the number of shots that use it.

I really would like to see some footage shot at 1080p, and I don't think I am alone on this one.

Also, I think that this camera is going to be used to shoot a lot of feature films. Next year you can wait for a lot of movies being shot with the HVX200.

I was just curious to know if the camera will have the 1080p mode ready when they release this camera in December. Since it is one of the features described about this camera, my question is: will they include it with the camera? They haven't talked about it a lot. All they have talked about was 1080i and 720p. They have shown footage in 1080i, even though it was coming out straight from the camera, and now they have shot it at 720p.

Maybe it has to do with the fact that the Varicam can only support 720p. Who knows? Maybe they want to show some footage shot at 720p with the HVX. Or because some of the guys that want to buy this camera will use it as a second camera when shooting with the Varicam.

But I ask one thing, if they advertise it as supporting 1080p, then why not talk about it? I think they should talk about it and show some footage, because there aren't that many cameras that support 1080p, right?

Anyway, I am just reading a lot about this stuff, and I guess by sometime next year, we will have some really nice footage like we got from the DVX.

I'm not basing my opinion of the camera on that frame grab. I am giving my opinion of the frame grab. Big Difference!

I don't care about it's "fakeness". I am interested when images come from panny to highlight the camera. I comment on the fact they can't even get the aspect ratio correct. I comment on the idea that they go to those lengths to do green screen. Is that why most of us want the camera. Why put such post-prod requirments on the footage they are releasing. I understand that they may want to highlight the 4:2:2 for keying.

They can't hide behind the fake street-ness of Tosh just so we can't have legitmet comments on what they put out there.

Cheers
Chris

btw - I REALLY want this camera to be awesome. I would love to shoot my next feature with it.

let's be honest, the screen grab sucks! Very video, aspect whacked. I give them zero excuses. They set up this Tosh site at panny and they can't figure out proper aspect and then they give us a shot like this. This is directly from panny and they still don't care to do it right.

They couldn't find a close shot that featured some great dof characteristics. They didn't ever shoot the faces of the talent in close? And who shoots red? I avoid it like the plague. The shot looks like it's in-between fields.
I agree that you're entitled to your opinion. You have very strong opinions and because of that people might miscrontrue that you're basing your opinion of the camera on that one grab.

If you'd been a little less strong it probably wouldn't come off sounding like a judgement of the camera. If ten people come off that strong it can snowball.

It's the old "damned if I do, damned if I don't" !

Why is it Panasonic takes a bashing for doing us a favor and showing us "something" from the HVX200?

From the way the Defperception article reads, they offered a DP who has used the Varicam and SDX900, a chance to check out the HVX200 and use it on an upcoming John Brannen music video. What he does with the camera is his choice.

Is he working with Panansonic in post? Somehow I doubt it.
Panasonic hiding? Oh please...

Sure, I want to see more, but I'm surely not going by one screen grab....

I didn't mean to sound so opinionated. But we are all in the business of images. I don't mean vs story, but that's what all this camera back & forth is all about, the images.

I have a very serious lack of respect for the way most camera companies release their footage or highlight the camera. In the end that's all that matters with these things, the images. No other industry is so haphazard about spreading the word regarding their products. All the R&D and then the marketing folks put out crap.

Fixing aspect ratio of screen grabs in PS is something you teach the intern on the first day, and 10 minutes later he/she better have it down.

Everyone here knows how to cheat the shot to help the dof. I'm talking the basics.

My comments where more directed at the way these companies "leak" stuff out and knowing that Tosh is really a panny front, I cannot cut them one inch.

Toshiba runs the world, please get it right. All of it.

Cheers,
Chris

I gotta go run laps or something. :)

I hear you Chris. I understand your concern for "doing it right".

I do know it's hard tp please everyone. I also strive for perfection.
I guess we'll have to wait and see the actual undoctored footage.

Regards, Steve

You seem really confident in your conviction of Panasonic marketing. I can't say i agree with you one way or another. But you do come off as a bit paranoid in that last post.

And why do they need you to give them any leeway on what gets released by a third party using their as yet unreleased hardware?
