First shoot with HVX?

New posting on the "Tosh site"... music video shot with HVX by Michael Caporale and will debut footage at DVExpo. Lots of greenscreen work.

Beyond the "hype" part of the posting, I have to say I'm happy that Panasonic listened to everyone requesting that the first public footage NOT be the standard trades show floor pan and zoom...

I thank Kaku Ito in Japan every day for his contributions, but I really don't want my first HVX clip to be video of him doing figure eights on his mountain bike behind his office!

Finally some footage! That is pretty cool, and would love to finally see the clip when "released". The post work is a a double-edged sword, it shows how the footage the camera produces can be used for post-work and green screen. However if there is a lot of post work on this footage - is it a true representation of what the camera can produce? Yeah it shows it can handle green screen - but it can have the plastic wrapper affect that post can add - to "clean-up". I know artefacts are artefacts so they'll still show.. But I really DO want trade show floor footage just to get the "benchmark" conditions ;)...

Oh well - we shall how this turns out!

Cheers, Nathan.

Its not a lot of material, but its at least its something!

Thanks Jim for posting the information and link.

Well no footage - but production stills and a still capture frame:

That's not exactly the most useful "first image" I could wish for... maybe the raw greenscreen frame, or... anything other than a post-processed frame for all the reasons Nathan mentioned above...

Try again, Tosh!

Yeah, though I'm really envying the 4:2:2 color space of the HVX right now (testing for scifest!) :(

Hmm.

it's 960x720 therefore 1.33 aspect.
I wonder what mode they shot this in?

I sure hope they upload more images.

Yes, but notice it looks anamorphic and squeezed... it's the resolution of DVCPRO 100 720p as saved to tape/P2. Take it into Photoshop and scale to 1280 by 720, or adjust the display pixel aspect to 1.333 and there you go... back to 16:9 screen aspect ratio.

hmm...the greenscreen work does not look that good on the edges....i sure hope it's the fault of the keyer and not the camera!!

sure has a "video" feel to it with all the sharpening the camera is doing...wonder if that can be turned down a bit via menu item like the dvx....

nothing gives away "video" more then deep DOF and fake camera "sharp"

It's very easy to pick that picture to death, from the quality of the FCP codec conversion (note stair-stepping on the red/details), to the edge enhancements, both of which are good reasons (along with the fact it's a composite) to not have this be the "flagship" image from the HVX. I won't make any judgement on the camera based off this poor choice, and will just pretend it didn't happen and I didn't see it.

Yes, it looks "video". As to edges, from the menu displays I've seen in the Kaku "hands on" video there are many more controls for detailing than we've seen on the DVX (at least my original DVX model, that is)... coring, etc. I'm sure this was pretty much a default shoot with out of the box presets, and without much experimentation.

I'm not disappointed with this initial screen grab. It probably has some double compression on it. Who knows. But here's what's jumping out at me. Notice how it's handling the highlights. Looking damn good!

This does *not* look like how the existing HDV or DV cameras would handle the same shot.

I'm impressed, and looking forward to more.

Sort of my thoughts so far.

I still can't get over this Tosh Bilowski character. What's the significance of his "visit" to Japan and the point of posting photos from it? Maybe I just don't get post-modern marketing.

Interesting that you made this observation, Obin.
Just about sums up what some of us were probably thinking the first time we viewed processed andromeda grabs . . .

 And I'm a(n) Obin's fan. Congrats for your work but sometimes your tech POV, Obin, is so inflexible...

let's be honest, the screen grab sucks! Very video, aspect whacked. I give them zero excuses. They set up this Tosh site at panny and they can't figure out proper aspect and then they give us a shot like this. This is directly from panny and they still don't care to do it right.

They couldn't find a close shot that featured some great dof characteristics. They didn't ever shoot the faces of the talent in close? And who shoots red? I avoid it like the plague. The shot looks like it's in-between fields.

Anyone in this forum would post better grabs.

God I really hope it gets better! I really want this camera to rock.

Man am I edgy :) Must be the waiting.

Cheers,
Chris
