First proper XDCAM EX3 Review

Yep im glad too :P - we can now hold hands and sing koombaya :P

Technology changes and advances or plays havoc all the time with the gear we got. The EX3 looks like it introduces some cute new options but nothing so revolutionary imo (from the specs) that EX1 users would have to get infuriated about it.

EX-3 might give the HPX500 some nice competition when considering price to performance ratios.

I'm definitely interested in seeing some Letus + Relay footage from the EX-3 ASAP!!!

Phil, has it been confirmed whether or not it's B3 or B4?

The best thing about the EX3 is TC/IN OUT, which allows double system recording.

It was reported to cost 5999 english pound which turns out to be ~$11k. If that is MSRP, street price could be us$9999. If so, game over Canon and game over JVC.

Philip...great work on your video review, etc. You're a great resource. I too love my EX1...but wow...the EX3 looks fantastic. However, let me ask you...EX3...or Red Scarlet?:)

That now marks two generations of EX series cameras, and Adobe Systems still lacks ANY kind of software support for the file format. Come on, Adobe, get the lead out!

until i get my hands on a Scarlet and try it out which is highly unlikely I couldn't say!

Looking at the EX3, Phil said that the LCD screen doesn't fold away. This could cause a few problems. Its a shame the LCD hasn't been designed so that the clip on viewfinder couldn't be removed so the LCD could be stored safely like the EX1.

It is asking to be knocked or bashed if it sticks out like that.

Also, a new camera bag might also be needed to allow room for the LCD.

I was aiming to chop my EX1 in at the end of the year, pay off the interest free loan, and then get a new camera on a new 12 months interest free. So come November I could be getting one of these, and as its a few months after the initial rush, the price would have dropped a further 5% on top of the usual discounts as well.

think of of it like a full size camera, you leave the viewfinder attached the whole time, yes. you may need a new bag as the camera is now higher too

Phil,

Great work as usual. The fuel on the water and pigeons on the wall overcranked rocked. Getting ready to hit the floor here in Vegas in the next 1 1/2 hrs. We were going to buy 3 EX1 cameras and now I am glad we held off. We have a b camera and a good one at that with the EX1 and should be able to pick up a couple of the EX3's for a upcoming project this fall if Sony can crank them out fast enough. Going to the LAFCPUG at the MGM wednesday or are you out filming something cool?

Our NLE suite is not wired into the main office internet. It's on a separate network with no cabling to the outer office network for security reasons. I wonder when Adobe will make it available as a download for burn to CD and sneakernet?
