First proper XDCAM EX3 Review

Will be online on my site Sunday afternoon after the official launch. It was supposed to be secret but the cat is out of the bag. I wish I could share it with you now but I have given my word to hold it until the press conference in Vegas on Sunday afternoon.

It's an in depth Video Review, a written one and a short shot with it.

It will answer all your questions, both from a newbie perspective and from an EX1 owner's perspective.

I hope to provide enough information to help people make decisions.

As the knowledge of the EX3 is out there I may as well give you the link to the little short I shot using it and the Letus Extreme. Pictures of it mounted on the EX3 will be in the review tomorrow.

In the meantime here is the short film "3 Days in April", literally shot over 3 consecutive days in the same location.

Here it is on Vimeo: http://www.vimeo.com/879872

and on Exposure room: http://exposureroom.com/members/philipbloom.aspx/assets/4d07d1cb33c046249042babe00b22195/

It doesn't give any secrets away about the camera in the slightest!!!

she has AWFUL table manners, kept stealing my chips. Also she kept singing those awful songs

She has an amazing ability to sound like a robot if I remember, like someone playing her voice on a synth, ......."Do you Believe in love after love"........:cheesy:

she kept singing THAT song during our lovemaking, it was too full on for me. I won't be calling her back! Anyway I think we are now OFFICIALLY off topic!!

Nice footy Phil. Your skills are up there, and the fact that you're willing to get out and shoot gives you the opportunity to capture interesting footage and develop your skills. Self evident really :) Very motivating for many of us too.

What rain cover are you using?

I surely hope that this EX3 (what happened to the EX2 btw?) is going to be a shoulder mounted interchangeable lens camera in a 8 to 10 k price range.

Why? Well, it's the only way I won't feel screwed over by buying an EX1 last week :).

It also must be, I think it's like the Canon XH-A1 and the XL-H1 camera. Two of a kind, same body, same quality, but one has interchangeable lenses and is shouldermounted for a lot more cash then the other.

That sounds like the only way...please Philip, post us that review, I am dieing to find out!!!

*edit*
Ah, it is. Its actually exactly that. Even the shape of the EX3 looks like the Canon shoulder mounted one. No interexchangeable lenses though on the first look-o-look. No prices known either.

Yes it has interchangeable lenses. It comes with the same lens thats stock on the EX1 but you can put any kind of lens on there you'd like!

Oi Philip, wouldnt it be time to put your review live? DVuser also put their article live so I guess you can too ;).

Interchangeable lenses is nice and all, but I never saw the importance in it in my line of work.
The only thing I do like about the EX3 is the frame rate control on the body, one thing is still missing, and that is an shutter dial. That'd be the best thing they can incorporate.

Anyways, good job Sony. But it does feel like a Canon line up, especially if you start comparing designs.
I love the overhaul, couldn't be better because I hated the FX1's design.

Well, with the EX3, when you have CA and back focus problems, now at least Sony can blame the lens, instead of fixing the camera. ;)

Not sure if anyone is interested. But I have a written and video review of the EX3 here: http://www.philipbloom.co.uk/Philip_Bloom/XDCAMEX3.html

DVuser were very very naughty and broke the embargo for the second day running. Created problems for a lot of people, including me.

Ofcourse we are interested! I've been F5ing your blog for hours :)
Good review, loved the text and the video :) Thanks for that!

It convinced me that I made a good buy with the EX1 and I am not regretting it.

Yup me to. The EX-3 is really nice. But as i see it now, it is for the big user with plenty of money to spend on lenses etc. I keep mine ex1 for now :).

But i am happy to see they launched a new camera, its good for the consumer tho, cause how more people (pro and amatures) are using the EX line, the cheaper the SxS cards, batterys etc will be (i think). Improvement on workflow issues (premiere pro.. anyone?) maybe.. We will see. Its good to hear Sony is investing in there new product line. These are good times.

Thnx for the review Phil. I can go to sleep now and wake up tomorrow running to my ex1 and give it a big hug !!

Cheers from the Netherlands.
