Jim just sent me the new Cage, with flat sides to aid in a few things.

i dont thnk the bottom rods are going to do what you think they are for (15mm lens rods).. those bottom rods, as well as the top, appear to be only structural and serve as another mounting point.

Mulitple top mounts will kick butt for jib/monitor etc....

I really think that red needs to include 15mm rod support, esp with the pl mount, I'm dying already to use a big ol 300mm on that thing!

300mm is the first lens out of the gate.. so dont worry there will be rods for it.

And yes it always was to be black, the chrome as mentioned before was just a machine sample.

It's a nice improvement, but there is something I've been wondering for a while. How do you hold that thing?
Or is it just meant for rigging on a crane or other device? Because I can't see any practical (aka comfortable) way to hold it.
Hopefully they come up with just a simple red shoulder mount that has a handle.

I see a lot of ways of holding that thing, that's the beauty of it!
Handle on top or left hand on the left front (now changed side) and the right hand on the right back one. Both hands on the back ones.
The list goes on.. The old cage was more visually interesting but I can see how this would be more practical.

camera body is 7 lbs. The cage i imagine will be about 2lbs.

with the RED CAGE you dont really hold it for handheld shooting, thats what the other handles are for. The RED CAGE has a top handle, but that is mostly just for transporting it from setup to setup.

Here is what you use for holding the RED camera:

The three handle one looks good. They should reverse the way the handles rotate though. Rather then rotating backwards they should swing forward and allow you to lock them at different angles. Might even be cool if they telescoped a little bit.

wow thats a good idea (the forward) rotation. i know for heavy lenses i like to push my handles a little forward tilt to ease the strain on the wrists.

With my custom shoulder rig, I like my grips to be able to pivot and lock through about 45 degrees. That way through a long shoot, I can A restabilize for different shots and angles and B keep from getting sore in one position.

What would also be peachy would be if those grips could rotate outwards up to 10 degrees or so.

i agree with the outward 10 degree Gavin.. thats about what i prefer. And make sure they are the same size as mountain bike grips so you can wrap them up if need be.

yes thats a strap, kinda hard to see in that photo. its designed to be held like a gun, and it rotates around your shoulder up and down.

The adjustable grips concept is the DV Multi Rig concept. And it is patent pending.

Just have to change the name to "RED Multi Rig..."

Danny.
