GH4 First look at 24p anamorphic & V-Log on GH4

This is now verging on the idiotic! Why can't Panasonic just come out and say what's happening?

Again, as a software engineer, I all too often feel that my work isn't valued properly, since it's just software. But how much would you spend to switch systems to get a competing product that had log? Anyone ever thought that if log came out for the GH4, it would take sales from the DVX200, and Panasonic has to figure out how to recoup the loss? How much is a blown highlight smack dab in the middle of the feature you're shooting worth?

From Eric Naso's Facebook page...

What is the difference between V-log Gamma and V-log L ? V-log L is what they came up with for both the DVX200 and GH4. It's a version that is from the Varicam V-Log. They had to tweak it for the MFT sensor.

That doesn't answer the question though. I've asked him to clarify, but no response yet. We already knew what V-Log L stood for ("Lite") and that it was the modified version derived from the one developed for the VariCam.

It's half the answer. It's good to know that Panasonic is porting VariCam tech to the GH4 and DVX200.

I read somewhere the other day (or saw it on a vid) that the V-Log adds 2 stops of dynamic range to the GH4...anyone else see this? Would it add that much?
Also (speculation) I take it Illya was taking about the LOG on the NX1 not being a proper log...is S-LOG2 a proper log?

Yeah pretty darn impressive...shadows are noiser? I think the Panny guy said only the darkest areas have noise...I dont think that would be a problem.
Especially if the highlights are greatly improved as everyone that has tested this V-Log says they are, apparently the usual mid type shadows retain a lot of detail...
if that all happens this will be a really great thing..

New GH4 V-Log grading test

What is the point of demoing v-log with very low contrast scenes? These scenes would be better looking with normal profiles without grading.

GH4 has already quite flat image with natural contrast -5.

grading a shot with Natural contrast -5 versus V-log would get different results.

I agree, this was a pretty pointless video for demoing v-log. Well, except maybe that last shot of the sunset. Why not shoot a high contrast scene, or indoor night scene or something to really show the benefits?
