First Letus35A shoot

scharky,
Thanks for the sample footage, as well as what you're settings were. Very help indeed.

damn I wish FCP had a sharpening feature in it

FCP does have sharpening, there are actually a couple of options, here they are:
go to:
Effects - Video Filters - Quicktime - Sharpen
or
Effects - Video Filters - Sharpen - Sharpen

Also check out these TMTS filters, they are free, and offer some noise reduction, and smart noise reduction filters.

I was just looking at your clips again- Both Sscharky's and Envision's- And I like what each of you have done. The DOF is great with this adapter. Thanks again for sharing.

BTW-
For those of you who don't want to use / view the WMV files in the WMP, check out this plug-in Flip 4 Mac. It will allow you to view WMV files in QT. And you can upgrade to the pro version which will let you export in WMV.
Anyway, I like the ability to pause the footage and look at various frames, which I can't do on my mac with WMV files.

Thanks for the tip Ryan. This adapter really is worth every penny, and it's not very expensive to begin with. Really for the money, if you want a 35 adapter, the Letus is a great way to go.

Scharky,

Just to be clear, when you're talking about uprezzing the footage in Vegas does that mean that you are putting it on a 720p timeline and just exporting normally from that point? I just want to make sure that I am understanding. Thanks!
Jeremy

Yep. Actually I had these in a 1280x560 24P timeline, but yeah, thats basically it. I have my computer hooked up to a 720P projector, so when I export a wmv as HD it looks much better than exporting a standard def video, and having the computer upscale it on the fly, or even from a DVD for that matter. Hence the reason for my madness. I also think it helps to show me the flaws of what is going on with the image, and allowing me to make finer adjustments for an overall better image.

One last question about this uprez procedure... When you output a WMV, for example, are you exporting a HD WMV or just a normal WMV? Does the uprez work if you export a normal 24p QT or WMV? That is what confuses me. Thanks!

Jeremy

You can export a QT or WMV file at virtually any frame size. Usually what I do if I am keeping the frame size, is just check "keep same as project" in the frame size diolog when rendering. There are HD WMV templates, but those can be changed to fit your needs. The only differnce between an HD wmv and a standard def wmv is the frame size.
Hope this helps.

Hi Scharky thanks for sharing your settings info, saves me another hour. A beer for your efforts! Just wanted to ask what zoom you are using on your letus and what mf number to focus on gg?

While the answer to that will give you a good starting place, it will not be the same on every camera and adapter. When Norm and I shot Pandora for the DVX Fest we each had a Letus35 on our camera- (The reg version, not the flip). And each of our setting were slightly different. Not a huge difference, but they were not exact. So while the answer will give you a good place to start, I would use a focus chart to make sure that you are dead on focused.

Norm will have to correct me if I'm off on this, but from what I remember off the top of my head, with the Letus35 we were at:
Z71 - Z69
MF8 - MF10

Hopefully Scharkey has his setting near by can can help you more. (I just wanted to give you a heads up.)

A trick I've recently learned, which seems to pull good results:
Hook your camera up to your NLE so that you have a FULL frame visible of what the camera's seeing and then zoom in far enough so that the edges of the GG are out of frame.

Then, with the GG still (don't activate the motor), work to get the grain on the GG as perfectly sharp as possible ... once you turn the motor on, the grain disappears.

Then when you've got your settings, lock it all in place with something (gaffer tape to lock down the focus/zoom rings, etc. - oh, and if you do that, disengage the servo for the zoom).

Thanks Norm for all your efforts. I hope that next shoot out, people won't have fear to send in their units. I am working on the GG centering adjustment now on the Flip units so end users can center their units according to their CCDs location and will have it done soon. Thanks.

I have to say, I'm surprised no one's given' me crap about the cowboy clip I posted on page 3. That, or I was just SO un politically correct no one wants to bring it up.

However, not to steal from scharky's thread, but since I think he intended this more about the Letus than his particular footage/subject, seemed appropriate to post those here.

I sure do.
Z72
MF7

Thanks.

It seems that each camera is pretty close in Z & MF Settings, but need to be adjusted for the particular camera. I think that part of it has to do with the fact that the Letus screws on to the lens, and with the different amounts of being "screwed in" I would think that it will effect the Z & MF settings as I mentioned before.

lol thanks for the reply scharky..... now my question is I have letus flip and cant zoom out past about 82, wondering then if this is abnormal?
